Immunosuppressive treatment for myasthenia gravis crises improve the taste disorder in patients with thymoma: two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Taste disorders in patients with thymoma accompanied by myasthenia gravis (MG) is rare. CASE DESCRIPTION: The first case was a male in his 50s who underwent surgery for Masaoka stage III type B3 thymoma. He experienced a loss of taste before surgery, which showed no improvement after surgery. Due to a MG crisis 44 days after surgery, the patient underwent intensive treatment with mechanical ventilation, steroid pulse therapy, and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy. The patient recovered taste when he started oral food intake after the treatment for the MG crisis (about 3 mo

Body Composition in Fussy-Eating Children, with and without Neurodevelopmental Disorders, and Their Parents, Following a Taste Education Intervention.

Fussy eaters may have an increased risk of becoming overweight or obese as adolescents, with fussy eating and weight status also correlating with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDs) such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Further, maternal and children's weight status relationships are well-established. In this study, we analyzed the body composition of parent-child dyads using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Fifty-one children aged 8-12 years, with an ND (n = 18) and without (n = 33), and their parents, participated in a 7-week food-b

Long-term systemic and mucosal SARS-CoV-2 IgA response and its association with persistent smell and taste disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Current approved COVID-19 vaccines, notably mRNA and adenoviral vectored technologies, still fail to fully protect against infection and transmission of various SARS-CoV-2 variants. The mucosal immunity at the upper respiratory tract represents the first line of defense against respiratory viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 and is thus critical to develop vaccine blocking human-to-human transmission. METHODS: We measured systemic and mucosal Immunoglobulin A (IgA) response in serum and saliva from 133 healthcare workers from Percy teaching military hospital following a mild infection (S

Japan's Practical Guidelines for Zinc Deficiency with a Particular Focus on Taste Disorders, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, and Liver Cirrhosis.

Zinc deficiency is common in Japan, yet awareness on this disorder is lacking. The Japanese Society of Clinical Nutrition recently issued the Japan's Practical Guideline for Zinc Deficiency 2018 setting forth criteria for diagnosing zinc deficiency, i.e., (a) one or more symptoms of zinc deficiency or low serum alkaline phosphatase, (b) ruling out other diseases, (c) low serum zinc, and (d) alleviation of symptoms upon zinc administration. Serum zinc <60 μg/dL and 60-80 μg/dL indicate zinc deficiency and marginal deficiency, respectively. Zinc deficiency symptoms vary and include dermatitis an

Investigating the Relationship Between Opium Addiction and Taste Disorder in Addicts Referred to Exir Salamat Addiction Center.

BACKGROUND: Disturbance in the sense of taste can destroy appetite and change eating habits, causing a significant decrease in the quality of life. The use of opium causes a disturbance in the sense of taste. Opium is a narcotic drug that can cause temporary or permanent damage to the taste system, making it a source of concern in dentistry. This research was conducted to determine the effects of opium consumption on the sensation of the four main tastes. METHODS: This study was conducted in a single-masked and descriptive-analytical manner. The study population included 107 opium addicts and

Long-term follow-up results of electrogustometry and subjective taste disorder after middle ear surgery.

OBJECTIVES: The present study compares the long-term follow-up results of electrogustometry with patient reports of taste dysfunction after middle ear surgery. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review of 371 patients who underwent middle ear surgery. METHODS: Patients were divided into the following groups depending on the degree of manipulation or surgical damage to the chorda tympani nerves: the no-touch group (group 1 [n = 109]); the touch group (group 2 [n = 149]); and the severed nerve group (group 3 [n = 113]). Electrogustometry was periodically performed over the course of several years. R

Vitamin C deficiency in osteogenic disorder Shionogi/Shi Jcl-od/od rats: effects on sour taste preferences, lick rates, chorda tympani nerve responses, and taste transduction elements.

Animals use sour taste to avoid spoiled food and to choose foods containing vitamins and minerals. To investigate the response to sour taste substances during vitamin C (ascorbic acid; AA) deficiency, we conducted behavioral, neural, anatomical, and molecular biological experiments with osteogenic disorder Shionogi/Shi Jcl-od/od rats, which lack the ability to synthesize AA. Rats had higher 3 mM citric acid and 10 mM AA preference scores when AA-deficient than when replete. Licking rates for sour taste solutions [AA, citric acid, acetic acid, tartaric acid, and HCl] were significantly increase

Taste and Smell Disorders in Children and Young Adults With Cystic Fibrosis and Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia-A Prospective Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: In cystic fibrosis (CF), the defect of the CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) can also affect sensory nerve cell function, as recently demonstrated in animal models. The aim of this prospective cohort study was to investigate whether taste and smell disorders in CF correlate with persistent CFTR dysfunction detectable by iontophoresis or rather with inflammation or lung function. Participants with primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) and controls without pulmonary disease served as comparators. METHODS: In 65 participants (age median 19 years IQR [12-26]; CF n = 23, PCD n =

Neuromolecular Basis of Impaired Conditioned Taste Aversion Acquisition in Valproate-Induced Rat Model of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), defined by social, behavioral, and cognitive anomalies, is also associated with dysregulated appetite. ASD individuals, often described as "picky eaters", exhibit restricted dietary preferences and a pronounced avoidance of novel foods. This suggests that the perceived safety of specific tastants may be a crucial determinant of dietary acceptance in ASD. Here, we explore the hypothesis that conditioned taste aversion (CTA), a learned avoidance of foods whose intake promotes sickness, is exacerbated in ASD. METHODS: We assessed the magnitu

Dissociation between amiloride-sensitive taste responses and ingestive behavior to sodium ascorbate in osteogenic disorder Shionogi rats.

Sodium ascorbate (AsA-Na) is widely used as a source of vitamin C. However, the mechanisms regulating voluntary intake across different concentrations and nutritional states remain poorly understood. Therefore, we examined behavioral and neural responses to AsA-Na in osteogenic disorder Shionogi (ODS) od/od rats, which lack endogenous vitamin C synthesis. Two-bottle choice tests were used to evaluate long-term behavioral responses, and the contribution of epithelial sodium channel (ENaC)-dependent taste signaling was examined using amiloride. In parallel, chorda tympani (CT) nerve responses we

D2/D3 Receptor Agonism: Paving the Way for a New Therapeutic Target for Taste Disorders in Parkinson's Disease and Other Conditions?

Chemosensory (i.e., olfaction and taste) dysfunction is common in neurodegenerative (e.g., Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and dementia), psychiatric (e.g., depression, bipolar disorders, other conditions), and postinfectious (i.e., long COVID) diseases and in the elderly. Despite its impact on patients' quality of life, no established treatment for taste disorders exists so far. A recent report on the effect of pramipexole, a D2/D3 agonist, on taste performance in healthy participants provides support for a new potential therapeutic target for taste dysfunction to be tested in futur

[The effect of zinc agent in 219 patients with zinc deficiency-inductive/ idiopathic taste disorder: a placebo controlled randomized study].

Diagnosis and treatment of taste disorders are challenging because the disorder can only be determined by the awareness of the patient. Hence, these disorders still require comprehensive evidence. We conducted a randomized, placebo-controlled double-blind study to investigate the effect of polaprezinc, a zinc-containing agent, in 219 patients with either zinc deficiency-inductive or an idiopathic taste, disorder. As a result, the zinc-treated arm experienced a statistically significant improvement against the placebo-treated arm in the perceptible threshold scores of the filter-paper disk meth
