Esophageal thermal injury by hot adlay tea.

Reversible thermal injury to the esophagus as the result of drinking hot liquids has been reported to generate alternating white and red linear mucosal bands, somewhat reminiscent of a candy cane. This phenomenon is associated with chest pain, dysphagia, odynophagia, and epigastric pain. Here, we report a case of thermal injury to the esophageal and oral cavity due to the drinking of hot tea, including odynophagia and dysphagia. A 69-year-old man was referred due to a difficulty in swallowing which had begun a week prior to referral. The patient, at the time of admission, was unable to swallow

Integrating multivariate statistics and interpretable machine learning for the quantitative profiling of tea polyphenols and catechins in six tea categories.

The accurate classification and quality control of the six tea categories remain critical challenges in tea science. The complex transformation of tea polyphenols and catechins during processing makes traditional chemical methods inefficient for classification. 1381 tea samples were analyzed to quantify 13 key variables including tea polyphenols, ester-type catechins, non-ester-type catechins, and critical ratios. We observed a gradient decrease in ester-type catechins correlated with fermentation intensity. Multivariate statistics revealed fermentation driven gradients in the composition of t

Natural Variation of COLD and CATECHINS REGULATOR 1 Coordinately Fine-Tunes Cold Tolerance and Tea Quality in Tea Plants.

Cold tolerance and tea quality are essential for profitable tea cultivation, yet the genetic interplay between them remains elusive. Here, we systematically evaluated cold tolerance and quantified 12 key tea quality-related metabolites over two consecutive years of 108 geographically diverse tea accessions in China. Multi-trait genome-wide association mapping identified a central hub regulator, COLD AND CATECHINS REGULATOR 1 (CCR1), significantly associated with cold tolerance and catechins biosynthesis in tea plants. Functional analysis demonstrated that CsCCR1 positively regulates cold toler

Prostate Cancer and Tea: CYP17A1 Inhibition by Phytochemicals from Tea Plant Camellia sinensis L. and Implications for Anti-androgenic Effect.

Camellia sinensis L., commonly known as the tea plant, produces derivatives such as green tea, which are among the most extensively consumed beverages worldwide. Green tea is rich in polyphenolic compounds, such as epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) and gallocatechin gallate. These phytochemicals have drawn particular attention as antioxidants, especially in relation to their potential to reduce the risks for prostate cancer (PC) among other common human diseases. However, the molecular evidence base needs to be strengthened before large-scale controlled clinical trials with C. sinensis L. and/

Light synergistically promotes the tea green leafhopper infestation-induced accumulation of linalool oxides and their glucosides in tea (Camellia sinensis).

Linalool, which is one of the most representative aroma substances in tea, is transformed into other aroma-related compounds, including linalool 3,6-oxides and linalool 3,7-oxides. The objective of this study was to elucidate the linalool oxide synthesis pathway and its response to stress in tea. By feeding experiment, chemical synthesis, and compound analysis, it was found that linalool can be transformed to linalool oxides via 6,7-epoxylinalool. The conversion rate from 6,7-epoxylinalool to linalool oxides was relatively high under acidic conditions. Four linalool oxide glucosides obtained f

Distinct Chemical Profiles and Gut Microbiota Modulation of Ancha Tea Compared with Green and Black Teas from the Same Cultivar.

Ancha tea (AT) is a type of dark tea processed through dew wetting. This study compared green tea (GT), black tea (BT), and AT, all derived from the same tea cultivar, to examine how processing methods influence chemical composition and health-promoting function. Nontargeted and targeted metabolomics revealed distinct chemical profiles among the three teas. In vitro fermentation with gut microbiota showed that all teas promoted beneficial bacteria, particularly Lactobacillus, while suppressing harmful genera, such as Escherichia-Shigella. All teas also enhanced the production of short-chain fa

Tea egg-inspired high mechanical strength hydrogel microneedle patch combined with tea polyphenol-magnesium nanoparticles promotes spinal cord injury repair.

Restoring motor function remains a primary goal in the treatment of spinal cord injury (SCI). However, the inflammatory microenvironment that develops after injury poses a significant barrier to effective neural repair. Addressing this challenge requires the development of bioactive scaffolds with potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, as well as reduced implantation-induced damage. In this study, we created a novel composite biomaterial scaffold with high mechanical strength and excellent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capabilities by dispersing in situ self-assembled tea pol

Characterization of tea polysaccharides from Tieguanyin oolong tea and their hepatoprotective effects via AMP-activated protein kinase-mediated signaling pathways.

In the present study, we succeeded in extracting tea polysaccharide (TPS) from Tieguanyin oolong tea, and the TPS was characterized. TPS is an acidic heteropolysaccharide containing rhamnose, arabinose, galactose, glucose (Glc), xylose, mannose, galacturonic acid, and guluronic acid. We found that TPS supplementation partially reversed the elevated levels of serum alanine aminotransferase, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in high-fat diet (HD)-induced nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) mice (p < 0.05), and hepatic steatosis and impaired Glc tolerance were also a
