Notes on the history of caffeine use.

As behooves something so deeply entrenched in culture, the historical origins of the use of methylxanthines are unknown and dressed in myth. This is true for coffee as well as tea, and for both it is interesting to note that their common use is really very recent. For coffee we know that its use became more widespread in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and in Europe this occurred in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The use of tea became more common during the Ming Dynasty in China and during the eighteenth century in Britain. Coffee was mostly an upper-class drink in Arabia, and

Intelligent regulation of NH2-UiO-66 decorated surface molecularly imprinted polymers: targeted recognition and precise control of three typical anthraquinone compounds.

Anthraquinones are pharmacologically active ingredients with laxative effects in health preserving tea, pose intestinal damage risks upon long-term intake. To realize their selective removal, NH2-UiO-66@MIPs were fabricated by grafting acrylic anhydride onto NH2-UiO-66 and subsequent coating of a surface imprinting layer. Its preparation process was optimized by adjusting the template-monomer-crosslinker molar ratio. DFT confirmed stable 1:5 template-monomer complexes. Machine learning predicted emodin adsorption capacity, and SHAP analysis guided process optimization. Characterizations confir

Trends and Patterns for the Use of Herbal Medicinal Products for Gynaecological Ailments.

Most Germans consider herbal medicinal products (HMPs) to be an important supplement to conventional medicine. Despite existing clinical evidence for safety and efficacy, they are still not sufficiently integrated into drug therapy of gynaecological complaints in everyday practice. By analysing patient-reported outcomes (PROs), this gap in medical care can be closed. Real-world data was extracted from the pharmaco-epidemiological database PhytoVIS. We analysed a sample (n = 1658) containing PROs from women who utilised HMPs to treat their gynaecological complaints applying descriptive and non-

Disruption of cellular redox homeostasis by bigelovin triggers oxidative stress-mediated apoptosis in Fibrosarcoma.

The two main cellular antioxidant pathways, glutathione (GSH) and thioredoxin (Trx) systems, can compensate for each other when one is inhibited. This reciprocal compensation limits the effectiveness of therapies targeting either pathway alone in tumor treatment. Thus, the concurrently suppression of the GSH and Trx systems synergistically enhances anti-tumor effect. Dried floral material of Inula britannica is commercially utilized in the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries for producing medicinal formulations and functional teas. Derived from Inula britannica flowers, bigelovin is id

Proposal of a new chemical marker for the quality control of the herb Scleromitrion diffusum.

Baihuasheshecao (Scleromitrion diffusum (Willd.) R.J. Wang), a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, is extensively used as an ingredient in herbal teas and is a well-known folk medicine in China. However, two common adulterants, Hedyotis corymbosa (L.) Lam. and Hedyotis tenelliflora (BL.) Kuntze, belonging to the same family, are frequently mistaken as S. diffusum in folk medicine. This confusion has led to a growing concern about their identification and quality evaluation. While previous studies have demonstrated over 15 various compounds as potential chemical markers for authentication and q

Black tea-processed Toona sinensis leaves alleviate DSS-induced ulcerative colitis in mice by enriching flavonoids and modulating gut microbiota.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease for which safe dietary interventions remain limited. Toona sinensis leaves, a traditional medicinal food rich in polyphenols and flavonoids, exhibit anti-inflammatory potential; however, how processing techniques modulate their functional nutrition and anti-colitis activity is poorly understood. In the present study, we compared hot air-dried T. sinensis leaves (TL) and black tea-processed leaf tea (TLT) in a mouse model of DSS-induced colitis (n = 8 per group) at a dose of 20 mg/ml (approximately 3.33 g/kg body weight per day) vi

Efficacy and safety of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation and acupressure in alleviating chemotherapy-related adverse reactions in female patients with breast cancer: a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Common adverse reactions to breast cancer chemotherapy (nausea, vomiting, sleep disorders, anxiety, depression) are often suboptimally managed. These symptoms undermine patients's quality of life and reduce chemotherapy adherence. Two non-invasive Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) interventions-transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) and acupressure have demonstrated efficacy in alleviating such discomforts, data on their effectiveness and dynamic therapeutic characteristics throughout the full chemotherapy course remain insufficient. METHOD: 198 breast cancer patie

Methyl gallate isolated from partridge tea (Mallotus oblongifolius (Miq.) Müll.Arg.) inhibits the biofilms and virulence factors of Burkholderia thailandensis.

ETHNOPHARMCOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The formation of biofilms is a factor leading to chronic infection and drug resistance in melioidosis. The production of biofilm formation and many virulence factors are regulated by quorum sensing (QS). Therefore, the discovery of QS inhibitors to reduce antibiotic abuse has attracted a lot of attention. In this case, the methanol extract of a unique ethnic medicinal plant partridge tea (Mallotus oblongifolius (Miq.) Müll.Arg.) and its isolated active compound were used as biofilms and QS inhibitors against Burkholderia thailandensis. AIM OF THE STUDY: The purp

Reevaluating the safety of chamomile poultices in ophthalmic care.

INTRODUCTION: German chamomile [Matricaria recutita L. (Asteraceae)] tea poultices are a common folk remedy in Central and Eastern Europe for treating eye inflammations such as blepharitis and conjunctivitis. This practice often precedes medical consultation and professional advice. Surprisingly, some healthcare professionals, including pharmacists, naturopaths, general practitioners, and pediatricians, recommend it as a primary treatment, particularly among the elderly. However, the ophthalmic use of chamomile lacks scientific validation, and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and ophthalmic
