Constant temperature and fluctuating temperature have distinct effects on hypoxia tolerance in killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus).

Climate change is leading to rapid change in aquatic environments, increasing the mean and variability of temperatures, and increasing the incidence of hypoxia. We investigated how acclimation to constant temperatures or to diel temperature fluctuations affects hypoxia tolerance in mummichog killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus). Killifish were acclimated to constant cool (15°C), constant warm (25°C) or a diel temperature cycle (15°C at night, 25°C during day) for 6 weeks. We then measured hypoxia tolerance (time to loss of equilibrium in severe hypoxia, tLOE; critical O2 tension, Pcrit), whole-an

Perioperative targeted temperature management of severely burned patients by means of an oesophageal temperature probe.

BACKGROUND: Hypothermia in severely burned patients is associated with a significant increase in morbidity and mortality. The use of an oesophageal heat exchanger tube (EHT) can improve perioperative body temperatures in severely burned patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the intraoperative warming effect of oesophageal heat transfer in severe burn patients. METHODS: Single-centre retrospective study performed at the Burns Centre of the University Hospital Zurich. Between January 2020 and May 2021 perioperative temperature management with EHT was explored in burned patients wit

Temporal artery temperature measurements versus bladder temperature in critically ill patients, a prospective observational study.

PURPOSE: Accurate measurement of body temperature is important for the timely detection of fever or hypothermia in critically ill patients. In this prospective study, we evaluated whether the agreement between temperature measurements obtained with TAT (test method) and bladder catheter-derived temperature measurements (BT; reference method) is sufficient for clinical practice in critically ill patients. METHODS: Patients acutely admitted to the Intensive Care Unit were included. After BT was recorded TAT measurements were performed by two independent researchers (TAT1; TAT2). The agreement b

Can insulated skin temperature act as a substitute for rectal temperature when studying circadian rhythms?

We measured rectal, lateral chest wall, and axillary temperature every half hour for at least 24 h while subjects were living normal life-styles and keeping a sleep/activity diary. We then used a purification method to estimate the decrease of temperature due to sleep and the increases due to sitting, standing, walking, or exercising, as well as the parameters of the cosine curve that described the "purified data." Cosinor analysis of raw and purified data showed that the acrophases from both skin sites were much more variable and up to 8 h later than were those from the rectum (particularly i

The Role of Temperature on Inflammation and Coagulation: Should We Apply Temperature Treatments for Hemophilic Arthropathy?

Hemophilic arthropathy (HA) is a complication of hemophilia, which is a genetic disorder characterized by a deficiency in blood clotting factors. HA is characterized by joint damage with inflammatory responses, pain, and movement limitations due to recurrent bleeding in the joints. The inflammatory reactions contribute to the activation of coagulation factors, which can exacerbate bleeding and further damage the affected joints. Therefore, the interaction between inflammation and coagulation plays a crucial role in the progression and complications of HA. Management strategies often focus both

Preparation and Properties of Epoxy Adhesives with Fast Curing at Room Temperature and Low-Temperature Resistance.

Developing a highly efficient multifunctional epoxy adhesive is still an enormous challenge, which can rapidly cure at room temperature and has excellent low-temperature resistance performance and is crucial for the epoxy adhesive and electrical sealing fields during severe cold seasons. Herein, diglycidyl phthalate (DP) was synthesized with phthalic anhydride (PA) and epichlorohydrin (ECH) to enhance the curing rate and low-temperature resistance of bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (DGEBA) adhesive. The modified DP/DGEBA adhesives were systematically analyzed by gel time, mechanical properties, a

The effect of administered crystalloid fluid temperature on aural temperature of moderately and severely injured children.

OBJECTIVE: Warm intravenous fluid (W-IVF) administration is the standard of care to prevent hypothermia in injured adults. It is argued that such administration may not be helpful for treating injured children, because children often do not require as much intravenous fluid (i.v.f.) as adults. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of W-i.v.f. to room temperature intravenous fluid (RT-i.v.f.) administration on aural temperature (Ta) in injured children during the first hour of trauma resuscitation. DESIGN: A randomized, controlled repeated-measures trial. SETTING: Emergency dep

Hot air breathing: effects of elevated wet bulb temperatures on tissue temperatures of the mouth.

Six healthy young men breathed room air or one of nine hot humid air conditions on separate days for one hour while walking on a treadmill (40% VO2 max). Inspired wet bulb temperatures ranged from 18.9 (room air) to 49.3 degrees C. Tissue temperatures in the mouth were measured by means of thermocouples placed on the tongue and hard palate. Analysis of variance on repeated measures showed significant increases in both tongue and hard palate tissue temperatures (p less than 0.001) as a result of increasing wet bulb temperatures; however, core temperature and heart rate were not affected (p grea

The open field assay is influenced by room temperature and by drugs that affect core body temperature.

BACKGROUND: The open field assay is used to study anxiety-related traits and anxiolytic drugs in rodents. This assay entails measuring locomotor activity and time spent in the center of a chamber that is maintained at ambient room temperature. However, the ambient temperature in most laboratories varies daily and seasonally and can differ between buildings. We sought to evaluate how varying ambient temperature and core body temperature (CBT) affected open field locomotor activity and center time of male wild-type (WT, C57BL/6) and Transient Receptor Potential Subfamily M Member 8 ( Trpm8) knoc

Body temperature and temperature gradients: changes during the estrous cycle and in response to ovarian steroids.

Rectal temperature, body weight, and vaginal membrane condition were monitored in female guinea pigs in order to determine the pattern and magnitude of changes in these variables across the estrous cycle and as a result of treatment with ovarian hormones. A thermistor probe was used to measure rectal temperatures at depths of 4 and 8 cm and to determine the temperature gradient between these two sites. Data collected across the estrous cycles of 18 intact females were aligned by day of vaginal membrane rupture, the estimated time of ovulation. Compared to measurements during the midluteal phas

Development of Robust Ratio Linear Fitting Method of Temperature and Emissivity Separation for High-Temperature Data.

Accurate temperature and emissivity separation from thermal infrared radiance is essential for characterizing materials under high-temperature laboratory conditions. Existing temperature and emissivity separation methods have largely been developed for multispectral remote sensing applications, where long atmospheric path lengths require extensive atmospheric compensation. In contrast, the current work considers hyperspectral laboratory measurements acquired over a short optical path, where atmospheric effects are comparatively small but increased measurement uncertainty remains within portion

Asymmetric Glycol-Ether Molecule Design Enables Temperature-Adaptive Anion Coordination for Durable High-Temperature Sodium Batteries.

High-voltage and high-temperature sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) promise cost-effective energy storage applications in extreme scenarios, but a critical dilemma persists: the chemical and electrochemical instability of conventional electrolytes. The intensified electrolyte consumption, electrode failure, and interface damage result from aggressive H+ corrosion, especially in NaPF6-based electrolytes. To address this challenge, this study proposes a molecular design strategy based on an asymmetric glycol-ether (F3Si) cosolvent. Leveraging its steric hindrance effect, we modulate the Na+ coordinati

Transport viable heart tissue at physiological temperature yielded higher human cardiomyocytes compared to the conventional temperature.

This study investigated the optimum transport condition for heart tissue to recover single-cell cardiomyocytes for future in-vitro or in-vivo studies. The heart tissues were obtained from removing excessive myocardium discharged during the repair surgery of an excessive right atrial hypertrophy due to a congenital disease. The transportation temperature studied was the most used temperature (4 °C) or the conventional condition, compared to a physiological temperature(37 °C). The heart tissues were transported from the operating theatre to the lab maintained less than 30 min consistently. Singl
