Endovascular treatment of common carotid artery dissection via the superficial temporal artery.

PURPOSE: To describe the endovascular treatment of an iatrogenic common carotid artery (CCA) dissection using the superficial temporal artery (STA) as the principal access. TECHNIQUE: An 83-year-old man with a post-carotid endarterectomy left CCA dissection was admitted for a transient ischemic attack involving the left cerebral hemisphere that occurred despite proper anticoagulation. After excluding redo surgery and transfemoral stenting (owing to a partially compromised aortobifemoral bypass graft), stenting of the left CCA dissection was planned using a right transbrachial approach, with t

Segmental Arterial Mediolysis in the Superficial Temporal Artery of a Young Patient: A Case Report.

Segmental arterial mediolysis (SAM) is a rare arterial degenerative disease that starts with degeneration of the smooth muscle layer, leading to aneurysm formation. SAM commonly occurs in the colonic arteries and other abdominal, vertebral, internal carotid, coronary, and pulmonary arteries. Early detection is crucial because of the risk of intra-abdominal or subarachnoid hemorrhage. This report presents the case of a 15-year-old male who presented with a 6-month history of left-sided preauricular pain and a subcutaneous nodule. Ultrasonography revealed a superficial temporal artery aneurysm.

Intra-arterial Angiolymphoid Hyperplasia With Eosinophilia of the Superficial Temporal Artery: A Case Report.

Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia (ALHE) is a rare benign vascular disorder that usually involves the head and neck area. The involvement of the superficial temporal artery is unusual and may mimic other inflammatory or vascular conditions. We present a 27-year-old female who presented to the vascular department at King Hussein Medical Center, with a gradual enlarging, pulsatile left temporal mass of three years duration. Imaging displayed a well-defined vascular lesion closely related to the superficial temporal artery. The patient was managed with surgical excision and arterial lig

Comparison of Exoscopic and Microscopic Superficial Temporal Artery to Middle Cerebral Artery Bypass.

PURPOSE: Exoscopes have been used as a reliable surgical tool in the neurosurgical field. They could improve surgical field visibility with 4K three-dimensional (4K-3D) monitors and provide alleviation for the physical strain by allowing surgeons to maintain a neutral posture. In this study, we report our initial experience with exoscopic superficial temporal artery (STA)-middle cerebral artery (MCA) bypass compared to the conventional microscope at our institution. METHODS: This study included 58 patients with ischemic status, including internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis, ICA occlusion,

Revascularization for symptomatic occlusion of the anterior cerebral artery using superficial temporal artery.

Isolated symptomatic occlusion of the anterior cerebral artery (ACA) is a rare condition and until date, only few cases regarding the revascularization of the ACA have been reported. This paper reports on successful attempt to revascularize the ACA using superficial temporal artery (STA) in patient with isolated symptomatic occlusion of the ACA. A 69-year-old man presented with several episodes of transient weakness involving left lower extremity. Cerebral angiography showed occlusion of the right ACA at the A2 segment. After medical treatment failure, the patient underwent STA-ACA bypass surg

Superficial temporal artery to middle cerebral artery bypass: past, present, and future.

OBJECT: The aim of this study was to review the historical developments and current status of superficial temporal artery (STA) to middle cerebral artery (MCA) bypass. METHOD: A literature review was performed to review the origins and current uses of the STA bypass procedure in neurosurgery. RESULTS: The idea of providing additional blood supply to the brain to prevent stroke and maintain neurological function has been present in the mind of neurosurgeons for many decades. In 1967 the first STA-MCA bypass was done by M. G. Yaşargil, and an enormous step was made into the field of microneuro

Perivascular mantle cell lymphoma affecting a temporal artery--a highly unusual cause of temporal headache.

INTRODUCTION: Temporal artery biopsy is a widely performed procedure for clinically suspected temporal arteritis. We the report the case of a 79-year-old male with mantle cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma previously treated with chemotherapy under follow-up with right-sided orbital recurrence, who developed right temporal headache, tenderness, and visual symptoms in the right eye. His symptoms were unresponsive to steroid treatment and he underwent a temporal artery biopsy. METHODS: The temporal artery was fixed in standard 10% buffered formalin, processed to paraffin wax, 4 micron sections cut thr

Non-giant cell arteritis of the temporal artery presenting as the polymyalgia rheumatica-temporal arteritis syndrome.

We describe a heterogeneous group of 4 elderly patients with atypical vasculitis of the temporal artery who presented clinically with the polymyalgia rheumatica-temporal arteritis syndrome. The first had apparently isolated eosinophilic necrotizing vasculitis without peripheral blood eosinophilia, history of asthma, or pulmonary vasculitis (so called limited form of Churg-Strauss syndrome). Temporal artery biopsy in the 2nd patient revealed small vessel necrotizing vasculitis in the fragment of skeletal muscle surrounding a normal temporal artery (i.e., negative for giant cell arteritis, GCA).

Efficacy of a Modified Superficial Temporal Artery-Middle Cerebral Artery Bypass Using Superficial Temporal Artery Side-Branch Donors in Adult Moyamoya Disease: A Technical Note.

Background: Adult moyamoya disease (MMD) is a progressive steno-occlusive cerebrovascular disorder for which surgical revascularization is the primary treatment. The standard direct superficial temporal artery-middle cerebral artery (STA-MCA) bypass uses the frontal and/or parietal branch of the STA as the donor. However, in some patients, conventional STA-MCA bypass may be suboptimal because of a large mismatch in caliber between the STA branch and the recipient artery, increasing the risk of cerebral hyperperfusion. This study aimed to investigate the impact of a modified STA-MCA bypass on M

Audit of temporal artery biopsy reporting in South Australia.

BACKGROUND: Despite histopathology playing a central role in the diagnosis of giant cell arteritis (GCA), until recently, there was no guideline for reporting on temporal artery biopsies (TAB). The Society for Cardiovascular Pathology established such consensus guidelines in 2023. The aim of this audit was to assess the extent to which South Australian TAB reports aligned with the reporting guidelines, and whether reporting practices changed across time. METHODS: All SA Pathology TAB reports from 2010, 2017 and 2024 were assessed against the reporting guidelines, which contain four main areas

Angiolymphoid Hyperplasia With Temporal Artery Eosinophilia: A Case Report.

Angiolymphoid Hyperplasia with Eosinophilia (ALHE) is a benign vascular proliferative disorder with uncertain etiology and pathogenesis. The aim of this paper is to report a case of ALHE in the temporal artery and discuss the general aspects of this pathology. A 29-year-old female black patient sought the Vascular Surgery Outpatient Service, complaining of bulging in the right temporal region, associated with pain and local discomfort. Physical examination revealed pulsatile bulging in the right temporal region measuring approximately 2.5 × 1.5 cm. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance showed an expansiv

Angioleiomyoma of the Parotid Gland Fed by the Superficial Temporal Artery.

Angioleiomyoma in the head and neck area is rarely observed. This report introduces 2 cases of angioleiomyoma discovered in the parotid gland, particularly with the superficial temporal artery (STA) as the feeding vessel. Each patient was evaluated preoperatively by clinical manifestation and computed tomography scan, but the difficulty was encountered due to nonspecific radiologic features of angioleiomyoa. Surgical intervention was performed for precise diagnosis and treatment. The tumors were fed from the STA, with the diagnosis of venous type parotid angioleiomyoma. To our knowledge, there

Multiple Spontaneous Arteriovenous Fistulas of the Superficial Temporal Artery.

OBJECTIVE: Multiple spontaneous arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) of the external carotid artery (ECA) are rare. We present a case of multiple spontaneous AVFs treated by coil embolization using a combination of the transarterial and transvenous approach. CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old woman complained of right pulsatile tinnitus and a mass lesion at the ventral region of the right ear. 3D CTA and cerebral angiography revealed two AVFs on the superficial temporal artery (STA) with an aneurysm 9.8 mm in diameter. A balloon guiding catheter was navigated to the right STA via the right femoral art

Intraorbital Arteriovenous Fistula From the Superficial Temporal Artery.

Intraorbital arteriovenous fistula is a rare vascular disease characterized by an acquired arteriovenous communication without direct cavernous sinus involvement. Intraorbital arteriovenous fistula may develop slowly and present similarly to other insidious orbitopathies, such as carotid-cavernous fistula. The authors present a case of a superficial temporal artery to superior ophthalmic vein fistula arising in the absence of trauma or prior surgery. This is the first report of a spontaneous intraorbital arteriovenous fistula arising between these vessels and further describes the rare occurre
