Comparison and ranking of interventions for temporomandibular disorders-myofascial pain syndrome: a Bayesian network meta-analysis based on randomized controlled trials.

OBJECTIVE: Various interventions are available for temporomandibular disorders (TMD)-myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) (TMD-MPS). However, a systematic comparison of their relative short-term analgesic effects is lacking. This research, based on evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs), aimed to compare and rank these interventions in terms of their short-term analgesic effects, thereby providing evidence for clinical decision-making. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science were retrieved from their inception until June 2025 to collect RCTs involving adult patients

Evaluation of Influence of Arthroscopy on the Range of Mandibular Movements Based on Medical Records.

The Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction Syndrome (TJDS) is a group of pathologies that affect the temporomandibular joint, mastication muscles, and attached structures, 1 of the leading causes of orofacial pain. Arthroscopy is a technique used as a method of treatment for TJSD. This was a retrospective cohort study, and data were collected from the medical records of patients with TJDS. The diagnosis of TJDS was established based on computed tomography and nuclear magnetic resonance imaging tests, and clinical examination. All patients, who underwent arthroscopy, were operated on by the same s

[Correlation between inner ear disorders and temporomandibular joint diseases].

Acute and chronic inner ear diseases involve many etiological factors, some as yet unknown. ENT-specific, orthopedic, hemorrheological, immunological and neurological disorders can affect the cochleovestibular system and induce hearing loss, vertigo and/ortinnitus. We performed a prospective study to analyze factors of the dentognathological system and of the temporomandibular joint that can influence acute and chronic inner ear dysfunctions. A total of 138 patients (49.3% female, 50.9% male) receiving clinical treatment for inner ear dysfunctions (12.3% chronic sensorineural hearing loss, 15.

Dental implications in Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. A case report.

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is an unusual disease entity afflicting many body systems. Temporomandibular joint dysfunction has been described in an isolated number of cases. Ensuing complications should be recognized and the treatment plan modified accordingly. The following is a case report and review of the literature.

[A rare form of secondary orofacial pain: Herzenberg's disease].

A clinical analysis of a patient with a rare form of secondary facial pain (Herzenberg's disease) is presented. The conducted research and pharmacological tests made it possible to exclude such diseases as trigeminal neuralgia, stylohyoid syndrome, TMJ pain dysfunction, dental plexalgia, myofascial facial pain syndrome. The patient is consulted by a dental surgeon to exclude pathology of the parotid salivary gland and sialolithiasis. The patient was treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics for 8 days. Also, supportive therapy was prescribed: desensitizing, vitamins, as well as an anxiolytic and

[A quantitative study of TMJ sounds. 1. A systematization on frequency analysis of clicking sounds].

TMJ clicking sound is a sign worth noticing as prodromal symptoms of TMJ dysfunction. Therefore, a solution of its characteristics is an important matter to grasp the diagnosis of stomatognathic function and progress of the disease. We try to systematize the procedure from picking-up TMJ sound to convertion of frequency and then investigate picking-up method and the measurement apparatus, because we need a quantitation of acoustical components of clicking sound to examine the influence of hearing ability due to TMJ dysfunction. The following were obtained: 1. Low frequency noise is reduced by

[Treatment of craniomandibular dysfunction by general practitioners].

A general practitioner diagnoses--after a screening--the patient who suffers from a dysfunction. Then he has to decide whether to advise either a further treatment on the basis of basic knowledge of the most frequent TMJ-dysfunctions or to refer to other disciplines. In the treatment by the general practitioner a careful and thorough screening is of primary importance. Finally, the therapy by means of a 'splint' often yields good results.

Research diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders: a systematic review of axis I epidemiologic findings.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to summarize and systematically review the literature on the prevalence of different research diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders (RDC/TMD) version 1.0 axis I diagnoses in patient and in the general populations. STUDY DESIGN: For each of the relevant papers, the following data/information were recorded for meta-analysis and discussion: sample size and demographic features (mean age, female-to-male ratio); prevalence of the assigned diagnoses; prevalence of the diagnoses assigned to the left and right joints, if available; prevalence of the

The many faces of the genetics contribution to temporomandibular joint disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Review the literature on candidate genes for temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). Setting and Sample Population - Literature review. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two basic approaches were used to obtain literature in any language regarding genes and TMD. First, Medline, Embase, and Science Citation Index databases were searched using the keywords 'temporomandibular joint disorder' and 'temporomandibular joint dysfunction' for studies published from 1966 to 2007. Then, the references list of the studies obtained in the database was also considered. RESULTS: Candidate genes for TMD in

Temporomandibular disorders and functional somatic syndromes: deliberations for the dentist.

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is an umbrella term for a collection of disorders affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and associated tissues. TMD is not a rare pathology for the dentist. The most common presenting symptom is pain, which causes the patient seek immediate treatment. Management is dictated by the cause. The most 'famed' causes include trauma, inflammation, aging, parafunctional habits, infections, neoplasms, and stress; and these are always considered in the differential diagnosis of TMJ pain. There are some less 'famed' causes of TMD, which are characterized by increase

Statistical analysis of an urban population of 236 patients with head and neck pain. Part I. Patient profile.

A large group of patients (236) was examined for myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome. The parameters used for diagnosis of the syndrome were pain and tenderness in the head and neck muscles and temporomandibular joint, joint sounds, and limited function. It was found that the demographic profile of our patient population did not vary greatly from those reported previously in other studies. However, we did examine more details of the patients' backgrounds than any other single study. The relationships of age, sex, occupation, marital status, emotional stress, and head trauma were discussed.

These results support the views that the fate of SFMC is

[Otologic manifestations of the pain dysfunction syndrome of the stomatognathic system].

Phylogenesis, ontogenesis and anatomy explain the close relationship between temporo-mandibular joint and the middle ear and can therefore help understanding otologic symptoms such as: otalgia which often correspond to articular and muscular pain irradiation (coming from sterno-cleido-mastoid, lateral and medial pterygoid, deep layer of the masseter and temporal muscles); acouphens and ear block sensation that could be caused by a spasm extension of the manducatory (i.e. medial pterygoid) to levator and tympani tensors. These three muscles, which originate from the first branchial arch, have a
