Hand and Wrist Tendinopathies.

Tendinopathies in the hand and wrist are common in athletes. This article reviews some of the common hand and wrist conditions, such as trigger digits, first dorsal compartment tendonitis, and extensor carpi ulnaris tendonitis. In addition, it reviews less commonly seen tendon conditions of the flexor carpi radialis and ulnaris, intersection syndrome, and extensor pollicis entrapment conditions. Diagnosis, nonoperative and operative treatment, and postoperative recommendations and return to play are also discussed.

Minimally invasive lateral plate placement for metadiaphyseal fractures of the humerus and its implications for the distal deltoid insertion- it is not only about the radial nerve. A cadaveric study.

INTRODUCTION: Minimally invasive lateral placement of plates on the humerus may be associated with a risk of injury to the radial nerve. Whereas this potential complication has been investigated in several studies, there is no data regarding potential injuries to the distal insertion of the deltoid muscle when the plates are passed distally in a submuscular tunnel. METHODS: Minimally invasive plate placement was performed on eight arms in fresh cadavers. A lateral deltoid split approach was made and the plates were introduced in an antegrade submuscular manner from proximal to distal. A later

Contracture of extensor hallucis longus after fracture of distal tibia and fibula: A case report.

UNLABELLED: Post-traumatic isolated big toe extensor contracture after tibiofibular fracture is uncommon and only a few cases have been reported. Major causes of it include anterior compartment syndrome, direct injury, entrapment or adhesion of the muscle or tendon. We present an uncommon case of isolated extensor hallucis longus (EHL) tendon contracture following a distal tibiofibular shaft fracture without compartment syndrome of the affected leg or foot. The clinical outcome is good after Z-lengthening of the EHL tendon and abductor hallux tendon in 1-year follow-up. LEVEL OF CLINICAL EVIDE

Irreducible Galeazzi Fracture-Dislocations.

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the radial shaft with disruption of the distal radial ulnar joint (DRUJ) or Galeazzi fractures are treated with reduction of the radius followed by stability assessment of the DRUJ. In rare instances, the reduction of the DRUJ is blocked by interposed structures requiring open reduction of this joint. The purpose of this study is to review all cases of irreducible Galeazzi fracture-dislocations reported in the literature to offer guidelines in the diagnosis and management of this rare injury. METHODS: A search of the MEDLINE database, OVID database, and PubMed databas

Irreducible Lisfranc dislocation due to the interposition of the tibialis anterior tendon: case report and literature review.

We report a case of a lateral type A (according to Myerson) Lisfranc dislocation irreducible by closed manipulation. Upon surgical exploration the lateral slip of the tibialis anterior tendon was found trapped between the medial and the middle cuneiform. Once the tendon was reduced, the dislocated first ray spontaneously reverted to its anatomical position and the joint was fixed with Kirschner wires. Seven similar cases have been reported in the literature. After analysis of all the reported cases we were able to describe a pattern of injury that may predict tibialis anterior interposition: (

Bilateral snapping biceps femoris tendon: a case report and review of the literature.

Snapping biceps femoris tendon is an uncommon cause of lateral knee pain. We report the case of a 15-year-old athlete with bilateral snapping biceps femoris tendons, painful over his right lateral leg during exercise. He underwent elective exploration of the right knee which revealed an accessory biceps femoris tendon with attachment to the anterolateral tibia. The accessory tendon was released and reinserted onto the fibular head with a Krackow suture. There were no perioperative complications, and he returned to full sporting activities within 3 months. We describe the operative technique us

Treatment of a neglected flexor digitorum profundus entrapment after closed reduction of both bone forearm fracture: A case report.

Flexor tendon entrapment (FTE) is a rare and usually lately diagnosed complication of pediatric forearm fractures. In this case report, we present a case of a neglected ring and little finger flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) entrapment after closed reduction of both bone forearm fracture and treated five years later due to late diagnosis. A 20-year-old man presented to outpatient clinic with flexion contracture of ring and little finger that occurred after both-bone forearm fracture treated with closed reduction and long arm cast five years ago. On his physical examination, flexion contracture

Fibular nonunion and equinovarus deformity secondary to posterior tibial tendon incarceration in the syndesmosis: a case report after a bimalleolar fracture-dislocation.

A 39-year-old woman sustained a grade II open bimalleolar fracture-dislocation of the left ankle. Six months after an ORIF of these fractures was performed, she presented with a nonunion of the distal fibula fracture and with a fixed hindfoot equinovarus and forefoot adduction deformity. At surgery for repair of the fibular nonunion, the posterior tibial tendon (PTT) was found to be entrapped in the posterior tibiotalar joint, with a portion of the tendon interposed between the tibia and the fibula in the area of the posterior syndesmosis. After extrication of the PTT, the hindfoot varus and f

Accessory Extensor Pollicis Longus Tendon Incidentally Discovered During Dorsal Distal Radius Plating.

Anatomical variations of the extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon are rare. Variations are typically asymptomatic, yet knowledge of these variations poses significance in the setting of dorsal approaches to wrist surgery. We present a case of an accessory EPL tendon that was discovered intraoperatively in the fourth dorsal compartment during open repair of a distal radius fracture with a dorsal spanning plate. If not correctly identified, the accessory EPL could have been entrapped beneath the plate, resulting in limited thumb extension and potentially tendon rupture.

Unusual coexistence of a variant abductor digiti minimi and reversed palmaris longus and their possible relation to median and ulnar nerves entrapment at the wrist.

During routine anatomical dissection of the left upper limb of a 73-year-old female cadaver, a unique coexistence of variant muscles was found. In the forearm region, a largely developed reversed palmaris longus was discovered. Its short distal tendon was in close relation to the median nerve. In the neighboring hypothenar region, an unusual abductor digiti minimi was also observed. Its muscular body was composed of two portions - medial and lateral one, arising from the reversed palmaris longus tendon. The lateral portion passed over the ulnar nerve and artery in the canal of Guyon. In the li

Stenosing synovitis of the extensor pollicis longus tendon.

There are only a few published cases of extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tenosynovitis in patients without rheumatoid arthritis. Even less common are cases of stenosing tenosynovitis of the EPL associated with triggering. This article presents 2 cases of EPL stenosing tenosynovitis with triggering of the thumb in the area of Lister's tubercle and addresses how to treat them.

[Detection of Actinobacillus equuli ssp. equuli in piglets with purulent polyarthritis and tendovaginitis].

Actinobacillus equuli ssp. equuli is an opportunistic pathogen in horses, mainly known to cause "sleepy foal disease". In comparison to horses, there are only few reports describing diseases in pigs associated with this gram-negative bacterium. This case report describes an outbreak of infection in a combined farrow-to-finish-farm. In September 2018, the following symptoms were noticed in one third of all newborn piglets from gilts and sows: 6-8 hours after birth piglets became weak and developed swollen joints with moderate to severe lameness. The piglets exhibited lethargy, a subset were non

Treatment approach to isolated common peroneal nerve palsy by mechanism of injury: Systematic review and meta-analysis of individual participants' data.

BACKGROUND: We reviewed the individual participant data of patients who sustained isolated common peroneal nerve (CPN) injuries resulting in foot drop. Functional results were compared between eight interventions for CPN palsies to determine step-wise treatment approaches for the underlying mechanisms of nerve injury. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Scopus, and CINAHL databases were searched. PRISMA-IPD and Cochrane guidelines were followed in the data search. Eligible patients sustained isolated CPN injuries resulting in their foot drop. Patients were stratified by

Central compartment release versus lesser trochanter release of the iliopsoas tendon for the treatment of internal snapping hip: a comparative study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the results of 2 different techniques of endoscopic iliopsoas tendon release in the treatment of internal snapping hip syndrome. METHODS: Between January 2008 and January 2012, a consecutive series of patients with the diagnosis of internal snapping hip syndrome were treated with endoscopic release of the iliopsoas tendon. The patients were divided into 2 groups according to the surgical technique used. Group 1 was treated with endoscopic iliopsoas tendon release at the lesser trochanter, and group 2 was treated with iliopsoas release from the central compartment. Hip art

Extensor tendon involvement in Smith's and Galeazzi's fractures.

Extensor tendon involvement in three Smith's and two Galeazzi's fractures are reported. In two cases of previous Smith's fracture, the extensor indicis proprius tendon had been entrapped and ruptured in one case, and in the other the extensor digitorum communis tendon of the index was pierced by the fragment. Both showed a severe tenodesis effect on the index finger and thumb. In a new case of Smith's fracture, long extensor tendons of the fingers and thumb had been trapped beneath a dorsally displaced third fragment making closed reduction impossible. In the two cases of Galeazzi's fracture;

[Subcutaneous atrophy following steroid injection in the treatment of trigger finger].

Trigger finger (TF), also known as stenosing tenosynovitis, is a rather common condition that causes entrapment of the flexor tendon at the site of the annular pulley. The accepted first-line treatment for TF is injection of long-acting corticosteroid in the involved flexor tendon sheath. This treatment is characterized by a high success rate and a low level of reported adverse effects in the literature. We report a case of subcutaneous atrophy after steroid injection in the treatment of TF.
