Venom is a prominently maternal virulent factor utilized by parasitoids to overcome hosts immune defense. With respect to roles of this toxic mixture involved in manipulating hosts immunity, great interest has been mostly restricted to Ichneumonoidea parasitoids associated with polydnavirus (PDV), of which venom is usually considered as a helper component to enhance the role of PDV, and limited Chalcidoidea species. In contrast, little information is available in other parasitoids, especially ectoparasitic species not carrying PDV. The ectoparasitoid Scleroderma guani injects venom into its ho

Mealworms are larvae of the Tenibrio molitor (Tm) beetle and are widely used as fishing bait. Four of five bait handlers in a warehouse who were exposed to particulates of Tm exoskeletons reported immediate-onset asthma, rhinitis, or contact urticaria while unwrapping and packaging the larvae. Positive cutaneous prick tests to Tm extract were detected in all four symptomatic workers. Specific IgE against Tm antigens of 14.6% and 22.5% were found by the RAST method in the two workers with Tm-induced asthma. Specificity of Tm-IgE binding was confirmed by RAST inhibition of 73%, 58%, and 37% by 2

The complete mitochondrial genome of the desert darkling beetle Asbolus verrucosus (LeConte, 1851) was sequenced using paired-end technology to an average depth of 42,111× and assembled using De Bruijn graph-based methods. The genome is 15,828 bp in length and conforms to the basal arthropod mitochondrial gene composition with the same gene orders and orientations as other darkling beetle mitochondria. This arrangement includes a control region, 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes and 13 protein-coding genes. The main coding strand is probably replicated as the lagging strand (GC skew of -0.36 and AT

This study introduces an innovative rapid screening approach for detecting nearly 1000 chemical contaminants in mealworm larvae, a novel and sustainable food source. By adapting the QuEChUP protocol with a sequential extraction (acetonitrile and acetonitrile/methanol), the method achieves broad chemical coverage, detecting and identifying 86 % and 71 % of compounds at 0.1 mg/kg, respectively. Its originality lies in applying a pooled matrix strategy, replacing the conventional screening detection limit workflow, to accelerate performance assessment while conserving resources-an approach partic

When animals prefer to make efforts to obtain food instead of acquiring it from freely available sources, they exhibit what is called contrafreeloading. Recently, individual differences in behavior, such as exploration, were shown to be linked to how prone an individual may be to contrafreeload. In this work, our main objective was to test whether and how individual differences in range use of free-range broiler chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) were related to the individual motivation to contrafreeload. We also verified whether other behavioral variations could relate to range use. To that

Invasive fungal infections and the emergence of antifungal resistance pose significant challenges to public health. This study evaluates the antifungal activity of two 8-hydroxyquinoline derivatives, PH265 and PH276, against Cryptococcus spp., Candida auris, and Candida haemulonii. Using the EUCAST protocol, both compounds demonstrated broad-spectrum antifungal activity, with MICs ranging from 0.5 to 8 μg/mL. PH276 exhibited synergistic effects with fluconazole and caspofungin against C. haemulonii (FIC ≤ 0.5). The derivatives inhibited C. neoformans biofilm formation at higher concentrations

Spiders have evolved highly selective toxins for insects. There are many insecticidal neurotoxins in spider venoms. Although a large amount of work has been done to focus on neurotoxicity of spider components, little information, which is related with effects of spider toxins on tumor cell proliferation and cytotoxicity, is available for Brachypelma albopilosum venom. In this work, a novel spider neurotoxin (brachyin) was identified and characterized from venoms of the spider, Brachypelma albopilosum. Brachyin is composed of 41 amino acid residues with the sequence of CLGENVPCDKDRPNCCSRYECLEPT

Protection of organisms against mercury (Hg) poisoning is most commonly associated with the antagonistic effects of selenium (Se)-compounds against mercury alkyls in higher animals. This study shows that there is no consistent difference among Periodic Group VIA derivatives including S(IV), S(II) organic, Se (IV), Se (II) organic, possibly Se VI, as well and Te (IV) in their ability to protect against mercury poisoning. The organisms used in assays were: Coleus explants (leaf abscission); turnip (germination); pea (growth inhibition and Hg uptake); a planarian (regeneration); the brineshrimp (

Yellow mealworms (Tenebrio molitor) serve as an alternative for traditional protein sources (e.g., chicken, beef, pork). Because the amino acid (AA) concentrations, AA digestibility, and protein quality of ingredients vary depending on husbandry, harvest and processing procedures, and other factors, each should be evaluated separately. The objective of this study was to measure the AA composition, AA digestibility, and protein quality of yellow mealworm-based ingredients using the precision-fed cecectomized rooster assay. Eighteen cecectomized roosters were randomly allotted to one of three te

Anurans secrete a wide diversity of toxins from skin glands to defend themselves against predators and pathogens. Bufonids produce potent poison in parotoid macroglands located in the postorbital region. Parotoid secretion is a rich source of bioactive compounds with cardiotoxic, cytotoxic and hemolytic activity. Poison content and toxicity may vary between species, populations, and among conspecifics inhabiting the same area. In the present paper, we pre-analyzed the individual variation in cardiotoxicity of parotoid extract of common toads (Bufo bufo Linnaeus, 1758) and impact of body mass (

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a bacterium that causes serious infections, including pneumonia. The limited range of available vaccines and the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria mean that new treatments are needed. This study looked at the potential of quercetin as an antimicrobial agent against S. pneumoniae in both isolation and in biofilms. The researchers used microdilution tests, checkerboard assays, and death curve assays, as well as in silico and in vitro cytotoxicity evaluations. They found that quercetin at a concentration of 125.0 μg/mL had both inhibitory and bactericidal effects a

Elevated tolerance to UV-B radiation and heat may be induced in conidia produced on fungi exposed during mycelial growth to sublethal stresses other than heat or UV-B. This is due to a phenomenon referred to as 'cross-protection'. Several mechanisms are associated with this increased conidial tolerance, one of which is the accumulation of trehalose and mannitol within conidia. In the present study, conidia of the insect-pathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae var. anisopliae were produced on mycelium subjected to nutritive, heat-shock, osmotic, or oxidative stress. The tolerance levels to UV-

Polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) pollution has emerged as critical environmental and public health concerns due to their potential for bioaccumulation and systemic toxicity. While our previous work demonstrated the trophic transfer of micro- and nanoplastics from insect yellow mealworms (Tenebrio molitor) to mammals, the biological consequences remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the impact of food chain-transferred PS-NPs (FCT-NPs) on the gut-liver axis in a mouse model. We demonstrate that FCT-NPs induce gut microbiota dysbiosis, disrupt metabolic homeostasis, and alte

There is a pressure to replace soybean meal in poultry diets with alternative protein sources, in order to ensure the sustainability of animal nutrition. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of two insect meals on performance, ileal morphometry, organs weight and blood biochemical parameters in Japanese quail. A total of 600 seven-day-old unsexed Japanese quail were equally divided into three groups (with four replicates each). The first group was the Control group (C) without insect meals (0 g/kg). The two experimental groups received diets containing 100 g/kg of defatted mealworm

AIMS: This study aimed to assess the antimicrobial potential of Bp1-AdE, produced by Bacillus pumilus 64-1, and to investigate its mode of action against Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA).
METHODS AND RESULTS: Bp-1AdE, derived from sponge-associated B. pumilus, exhibited bactericidal activity at 1 550 µg ml-1 against S. aureus ATCC29213 and MRSA strains. Light and fluorescence microscopy revealed drastic cell lysis of S. aureus treated with Bp-1AdE. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy suggested that Bp-1AdE disrupts the cytoplasmic membrane. Toxicity a

Brazil is a major consumer of pesticides, which raises concerns in the context of One Health. In this sense, new biotechnological alternatives for pest and disease control are fundamental. The use of relevant biomolecules, such as papain, a cysteine protease present in Carica papaya latex, has shown great potential. In this context, this study investigated in silico, through molecular docking with 130 pesticides authorized by MAPA and through experimental assays, the interactions between pesticides and papain, in addition to evaluating the combined action on Tenebrio molitor larvae. Sporotrichosis is a worldwide distributed subcutaneous mycosis that affects mammals, including human beings. The infection is caused by members of the Sporothrix pathogenic clade, which includes Sporothrix schenckii, Sporothrix brasiliensis, and Sporothrix globosa. The fungus can be acquired through traumatic inoculation of conidia growing in vegetal debris or by zoonotic transmission from sick animals. Although is not considered a life-threatening disease, it is an emergent health problem that affects mostly immunocompromised patients. The sporotrichosis causative agents differ in their virul

The European Commission authorized the use of dried yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor - TM) as a food ingredient under Regulation EU 2021/882. As TM emerges as an important allergen source, sensitization and allergy to TM in various populations need investigation. The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of sensitization to TM before its introduction as a food ingredient in Poland, as well as checking the occurrence of co-sensitivity to TM and other invertebrate allergenic extracts and molecules. This analysis was performed using serum allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) results

Early developmental stages of Gregarina steini Berndt, 1902 from the intestine of Tenebrio molitor larvae were studied by transmission electron microscopy. The formation and structure of the eugregarine attachment site were compared with comparable features found on the feeder organelle of Cryptosporidium muris Tyzzer, 1907, from the stomach of experimentally infected rodents. The similarity of the attachment strategy between both organisms was revealed. The membrane fusion site in G. steini, formed by the trophozoite plasma membrane, host cell plasma membrane and a membrane-like structure lim
