Links between organized visual search and reading ability in French primary school children.

Visual search skills develop substantially during the primary school years, and in parallel with children's reading achievement. Reading requires an efficient visual search and exposure to reading from the left to the right could also influence the way we explore space. No study, however, made links between visual search strategies and reading ability. In this study, 70 primary school children performed a cancellation task (Bells test) and reading tests. Our results showed that reading was closely linked to visual search accuracy but also to visual search organization, even after controlling f

[The clinical examination in cardiology].

The main manifestations of cardiac diseases are dyspnea, chest pain, palpitations, giddiness and syncope. A careful evaluation of subjective symptoms during history taking allows a rapid identification of an ischaemic heart disease, heart failure or cardiac arrhythmias. The additional clinical findings during bedside examination by inspection of the jugular veins, palpation of cardiac impulses and auscultation of heart sounds and murmurs are often sufficient to diagnose most of the frequent underlying disorders, such as valvular diseases, heart failure or pulmonary hypertension. The clinical a

Short- and long-term rhythmic interventions: perspectives for language rehabilitation.

This paper brings together different perspectives on the investigation and understanding of temporal processing and temporal expectations. We aim to bridge different temporal deficit hypotheses in dyslexia, dysphasia, or deafness in a larger framework, taking into account multiple nested temporal scales. We present data testing the hypothesis that temporal attention can be influenced by external rhythmic auditory stimulation (i.e., musical rhythm) and benefits subsequent language processing, including syntax processing and speech production. We also present data testing the hypothesis that pho

Perspective taking deficits and their relationship with theory of mind abilities in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS).

Introduction and objectives: In recent years, research has reported that between 45% and 70% of patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) have cognitive deficits, the most prominent being those associated with the frontal lobe. Among these deficits, we can find Theory of Mind (ToM), which is the ability to infer feelings and thoughts of others. Although it has been suggested that ToM relies on more basic skills, such as perspective taking (PT), no studies have investigated this association in patients with MS. The aim of this study was to investigate PT abilities in patients with MS and to establi

A Theory Informed Multi-Component Intervention to Promote Family Medicine Provider PrEP Prescription to Adolescent Girls and Young Women in the U.S. Southeast: Pilot Trial Results.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in the U.S. Southeast are disproportionately affected by HIV. We developed and piloted PrEP-Pro, an intervention to support family medicine residents to prescribe HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), with a focus on AGYW. We pilot-tested the intervention, evaluating feasibility, acceptability, and appropriateness. METHODS: Using intervention mapping, we developed sexual history training, PrEP curricula, and a PrEP champion program. For the 6-month pilot test, we trained PrEP champions who trained and supported residents at their sites. Parti

Sexual History Taking: Perspectives on Doctor-Patient Interactions During Routine Consultations in Rural Primary Care in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Sexual history taking for risk behavior contributes to improving health outcomes in primary care. Giving the high numbers of people living with AIDS, every patient in South Africa should be offered an HIV test, which implies that a comprehensive sexual history must be taken. AIM: To describe the optimal consultation process, as well as associated factors and skills required to improve disclosure of sexual health issues during a clinical encounter with a doctor in primary health care settings in North West province, South Africa. METHODS: This qualitative study, based on grounded

Neurologic assessment.

Despite rapidly evolving technologies, an accurate and thorough clinical neurologic assessment is still crucial to understanding presenting symptoms and signs. It is the most exciting but also challenging part of the diagnostic puzzle, essential to establishing a rational working hypothesis and a consistent management plan. Flexibility, creativity, and social skills are needed to elicit the child's participation. History taking is of the utmost importance, requiring not only time and perseverance, but also knowledge and effective communication to obtain relevant and precise information. Unders

[Samples in Coagulation Test].

An understanding and ability to develop a strategy to prevent pre-analytical errors of laboratory tests in the hemostasis area are two of the most important skills of medical technologists and related doctors. Recently, the working group for standardization of sampling in coagulation tests is working towards a consensus. This article reviews a summary of the consensus: (1) The anticoagulant for coagulation tests is 3.13-3.2% sodium citrate at a ratio of 1:9 to whole blood and the accuracy of the ratio is within 10%. (2) Blood sampling is achieved with the use of a 21-23G needle and coagulation

Transcultural validation in Soninke of a language assessment tool: The Avicenne ELAL©.

Children of migrants are often exposed to more than one language from an early age. The Avicenne ELAL© test has been created to better assess language skills, avoid misdiagnosing learning disabilities, and inform early interventions. Plurilingual children aged 3.5 to 6.5 take the test in their mother tongues, with an interpreter's assistance. The test comprises three scales: Comprehension, Expression, and Storytelling. The objectives of this study were to describe steps of the transcultural validation of the Avicenne ELAL© for the Soninke culture and language, both for children living in a mon

Impact of an Obstetrical Emergency Simulation Learning Module on Midwifery Students' Competency: A Non-randomized Control Study.

Background Obstetrical emergencies are multifaceted and complex, and their urgency demands a combination of clinical skills. As a result, it is generally observed that minimum teaching takes place during these emergencies. This study aimed to formulate a simulation learning module centered on chosen obstetrical emergencies and evaluate its efficacy in measuring the competency of undergraduate midwifery students. Design and participants The study utilized a non-randomized time series interventional research design among 188 midwifery students (control group 90, intervention group 98). A hybrid

[Proposals for the early diagnosis of late-onset hereditary ATTR amyloidosis in ‍nonendemic areas in Japan].

Late-onset hereditary ATTR (ATTRv) amyloidosis in nonendemic areas takes long periods of time to diagnose in many cases because the clinical symptoms are varied and nonspecific with the family history often unidentifiable. In recent years, disease-modifying therapies have been available for ATTRv amyloidosis, and early diagnosis is increasingly needed. The diagnosis of ATTRv amyloidosis usually requires histological confirmation of the amyloid deposition, although the amyloid detection rate largely depends on the experience, knowledge, and skill of the physician who performs the biopsy. It is

Recognition of emotions in autism: a formal meta-analysis.

Determining the integrity of emotion recognition in autistic spectrum disorder is important to our theoretical understanding of autism and to teaching social skills. Previous studies have reported both positive and negative results. Here, we take a formal meta-analytic approach, bringing together data from 48 papers testing over 980 participants with autism. Results show there is an emotion recognition difficulty in autism, with a mean effect size of 0.80 which reduces to 0.41 when a correction for publication bias is applied. Recognition of happiness was only marginally impaired in autism, bu

Teaching Emotional Intelligence: A Control Group Study of a Brief Educational Intervention for Emergency Medicine Residents.

INTRODUCTION: Emotional Intelligence (EI) is defined as an ability to perceive another's emotional state combined with an ability to modify one's own. Physicians with this ability are at a distinct advantage, both in fostering teams and in making sound decisions. Studies have shown that higher physician EI's are associated with lower incidence of burn-out, longer careers, more positive patient-physician interactions, increased empathy, and improved communication skills. We explored the potential for EI to be learned as a skill (as opposed to being an innate ability) through a brief educational

Mental Disorders and Learning Disabilities in Children and Adolescents: Learning Disabilities.

Learning disabilities are estimated to affect 5% to 9% of US children. Risk factors include a family history of learning disabilities, environmental factors during gestation or birth, and social adversity. Individuals with learning disabilities may experience social exclusion and bullying, poor self-image, or underachievement. They may struggle with tasks and in settings that depend on reading, mathematical skills and reasoning, or written and verbal communication. The family physician often is the first to be approached by parents regarding learning delays in children. The initial evaluation

Blood tests to diagnose schizophrenia: self-imposed limits in psychiatry.

The naturalisation of mental disorders-ie, their translation into measurable and preferably molecular variables-has not progressed despite breath-taking discoveries in the neurosciences. We ask whether self-inflicted limits exist among psychiatrists that would prevent them from supporting an imaginary perfect blood test with diagnostic specificity, sensitivity, and validity, which was able to replace clinical diagnosis completely. Although relevant for many mental disorders, we use the clinical disease category schizophrenia here as an example to discuss factors that oppose the naturalisation
