Interpretive theory of mind predicts greater willingness to seek out disagreement for learning.

Though disagreement provides valuable chances to learn, people typically avoid it. This study tested whether understanding that people can hold different views because they have interpreted the same evidence differently predicts children's and adults' interest in talking to someone with a different belief (children: 6 to 11 years; N = 97; 50 females, 47 males; diverse ethnicities; adults: N = 100; 49 females, 49 males, 1 gender-queer, 1 non-binary; diverse ethnicities). Data were collected between November 2024 and March 2025. Participants were first asked about their beliefs on different topi

Cognitive reserve, emotion perception and theory of mind in non-demented Parkinson's disease.

The Cognitive Reserve (CR) hypothesis attempts to account for individual differences in vulnerability to age- or pathology-related brain changes, where lifetime experiences (e.g., education, literacy attainment) have protective effects on cognitive decline. While evidence suggests CR proxies predict cognitive performance in Parkinson's disease (PD), it is less clear whether CR proxies attenuate decline on social cognition tasks. This study examined the influence of distinct CR proxies on performance on social cognition tasks assessing theory of mind and emotion perception. Twenty non-demented

Functional Dissociation in the Developing Superior Temporal Lobe: Language and Theory of Mind.

Language and theory of mind (ToM; the ability to infer others' mental states) are both crucial for human communication and yet their developmental origins are unclear. Are their neural substrates distinct within the superior temporal lobe (STL) but with opposing lateralization, as in adults? Or do they emerge from common neural substrates during development, perhaps in homologous regions originally involved in more basic social processing? Here we investigate the development of this functional dissociation, and the dissociation of their underlying connectivity fingerprints in a large cohort of

Cortico-limbic disruption, material-specificity, and deficits in cognitive-affective theory of mind.

The Theory of Mind deficit due to cognitive-affective disintegration is a poorly understood cognitive consequence of cortical and subcortical disruption in right temporal lobe epilepsy. Following Marr's trilevel approach, we used the material-specific processing model to understand the Theory of Mind deficit in drug-resistant epilepsy (N = 30). We examined pre- and post-surgery changes in first-order (somatic-affective, non-verbal component) and second-order Theory of Mind (cognitive-verbal component) in three groups formed using: (i) seizure side (right versus left), (ii) right temporal epile

Associations between theory of mind and conduct problems in autistic and nonautistic youth.

Many autistic young people exhibit co-occurring behavior difficulties, characterized by conduct problems and oppositional behavior. However, the causes of these co-occurring difficulties are not well understood. Impairments in theory of mind (ToM) are often reported in autistic individuals and have been linked to conduct problems in nonautistic individuals. Whether an association between ToM ability and conduct problems exists in autistic populations, whether this association is similar between individuals who are autistic versus nonautistic, and whether these associations are specific to cond

The rTPJ's overarching cognitive function in networks for attention and theory of mind.

Cortical networks underpinning attentional control and mentalizing converge at the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ). It is debated whether the rTPJ is fractionated in neighboring, but separate functional modules underpinning attentional control and mentalizing, or whether one overarching cognitive mechanism explains the rTPJ's role in both domains. Addressing this question, we combined attentional control and mentalizing in a factorial design within one task. We added a social context condition, in which another individual's mental states became apparently task-relevant, to a spatial cuei

Theory of mind is related to children's resource allocations in gender stereotypic contexts.

The present study investigated the relations between 4- to 6-year-old children's (N = 67) gender stereotypes, resource allocations, and mental state knowledge in gender-stereotypic contexts. Participants were told vignettes about female and male characters completing gender-stereotyped activities (making dolls or trucks). Children held stereotypic expectations regarding doll- and truck-making abilities, and these expectations predicted the degree of bias in their allocations of resources to the characters. Critically, children's performance on a Theory of Mind (ToM) Scale (Diverse Desires [DD]

Theory of Mind in Patients with Epilepsy: a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

The ability to understand our own thoughts, intentions, beliefs and emotions and those of others (Theory of Mind; ToM) is a high-order social cognitive skill that is vital for social interaction and which has been found to be impaired in patients with epilepsy. Studies examining ToM in patients with epilepsy, however, have yielded inconsistent findings. The main aim of this study is to determine whether the magnitude of ToM deficits varies as a function of the site of epilepsy focus and/or the type of ToM task used. Electronic databases searches included Psychinfo, Medline/PubMed and EMBASE. S

Are dopaminergic pathways involved in theory of mind? A study in Parkinson's disease.

The "orbitofrontal" and "cingulate" frontostriatal loops and the mesolimbic dopaminergic system that modulates their function have been implicated in theory of mind (ToM). Parkinson's disease (PD) provides a model for assessing their role in humans. Results of the handful of previous studies of ToM in PD providing preliminary evidence of impairment remain controversial, mainly because the patients included in these studies were not accurately described, making it difficult to determine whether their ToM deficits were due to general cognitive deterioration or to a more specific dopaminergic def

Theory of Mind in Huntington's Disease: A Systematic Review of 20 Years of Research.

BACKGROUND: People with Huntington's disease (HD) exhibit neurocognitive alterations throughout the disease, including deficits in social cognitive processes such as Theory of Mind (ToM). OBJECTIVE: The aim is to identify methodologies and ToM instruments employed in HD, alongside relevant findings, within the scientific literature of the past two decades. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive search for relevant papers in the SCOPUS, PubMed, APA-PsyArticles, Web of Science, Redalyc, and SciELO databases. In the selection process, we specifically focused on studies that included individuals

Additive effect of patient anosognosia and theory of mind deficit on dementia caregiver distress.

INTRODUCTION: Caregiver distress in dementia is multifactorial. The contribution of disease specific factors including anosognosia (poor awareness of cognitive/behavioral deficits) and theory of mind (ToM) deficit (difficulty with understanding other's perspective) requires further investigation. METHOD: Cross sectional secondary analysis was performed on a dataset of 205 research participants (age = 64.2 ± 9.46): 57 Alzheimer's disease, 38 behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia, 12 non-fluent primary progressive aphasia (PPA), 24 semantic variant PPA, 18 progressive supranuclear palsy sy

Theory of Mind Development in Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Individuals: A Systematic Review.

Theory of Mind (ToM) is a construct that includes a range of connected abilities linked to the understanding of others' mental states. During the last three decades, ToM development has been studied extensively in deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) individuals and performances compared to the typically hearing (TH) population. Given the advances in the early diagnosis of deafness, interventions, and hearing devices over this period, variations in task performance among DHH participants might have been reduced. The current systematic review aims to synthesize all studies of ToM in DHH individuals a

Development of the mentalizing network structures and theory of mind in extremely preterm youth.

Adolescents born preterm (<37 weeks of gestation) are at elevated risk for deficits in social cognition and peer relationships. Theory of Mind (ToM) is a complex form of social cognition important for regulating social interactions. ToM and the underlying mentalizing network continue to develop across adolescence. The present study recruited 48 adolescents (12-17 years old) who were either born extremely preterm (EPT; <28 weeks of gestation) or full-term (FT) at birth. Cortical thickness, gray matter volume and surface area were measured in four regions of the mentalizing network: the temporop

Causal evidence of right temporal parietal junction involvement in implicit Theory of Mind processing.

The ability to represent the internal thoughts, beliefs and desires of others, and recognise that these might be distinct from one's own, is crucial for adaptive social interaction. Such operations are thought to tap Theory of Mind (ToM), with its importance underscored by the link between ToM impairment and a range of neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., Autism and Schizophrenia). Extensive investigations into the neural substrates of ToM, when individuals have to make overt/explicit judgments concerning others, have highlighted a link with a network of regions including the temporal parietal

Functional lateralization of temporoparietal junction - imitation inhibition, visual perspective-taking and theory of mind.

Although neuroimaging studies have consistently identified the temporoparietal junction (TPJ) as a key brain region involved in social cognition, the literature is far from consistent with respect to lateralization of function. For example, during theory-of-mind tasks bilateral TPJ activation is found in some studies but only right hemisphere activation in others. Visual perspective-taking and imitation inhibition, which have been argued to recruit the same socio-cognitive processes as theory of mind, are associated with unilateral activation of either left TPJ (perspective taking) or right TP

Proverb comprehension reconsidered--'theory of mind' and the pragmatic use of language in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: For decades, impaired proverb comprehension has been regarded as typical of schizophrenic thought disorder. Testing patients' proverb understanding has widely been abandoned, however, due to poor reliability and validity of the assessment procedures. Since the underlying cognitive deficit of impaired proverb interpretation remained obscure, this study sought to determine the relation of proverb understanding with other cognitive domains, particularly 'theory of mind' or 'mindreading', in schizophrenia. METHODS: 31 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia were assessed using a novel G

Examining the "reading the mind in the eyes test" as an assessment of subtle differences in affective theory of mind after concussion.

Objective: This research examined affective theory of mind (ToM) differences between university students with and without a history of concussion using the revised Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET). Although, previous studies have shown that affective ToM is subserved by the ventromedial prefrontal cortex - a region that is vulnerable in head injury - few have examined whether subtle deficits in affective ToM are evident after concussion. Given the RMET's sensitivity to affective deficits following moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury, the current study examined its validity follow

Is Schizophrenia a Scapegoat? the Role of Childhood Traumas and Theory of Mind on Crime.

BACKGROUND: Childhood traumas and low theory of mind abilities have been shown to be associated with violence, crime and schizophrenia. Understanding the factors that predispose to violent behaviour by patients with schizophrenia is important for treatment and safety. AIMS: To investigate relationships between childhood trauma, theory of mind and violent behaviour in patients with schizophrenia and in a healthy comparison sample. Our hypothesis was that patients with schizophrenia who had been violent would be more likely to have a history of childhood trauma and show impairments in theory of

[Review on the study of the theory of the mind in pervasive development disorders and schizophrenia].

The theory of mind (ToM) is a new concept which could be defined as the ability to make inferences on the intentions of others. This capacity has been used to explain childhood autism symptoms and recently an attempt has been made to refer it to schizophrenia. The authors aim to review the theory of mind concept, the different questions that could appear in neurocognitive sciences and the utilities that this hypothetical model has been given in the clinical practice. The authors also consider the contributions and restrictions that its use has in the field of pervasive developmental disorders
