Keeping babies warm: a non-inferiority trial of a conductive thermal mattress.

BACKGROUND: External thermal support is critical for preterm or ill infants due to altered thermoregulation. Incubators are the gold standard for long-term support and have been adopted successfully in many countries. Alternatives such as radiant warmers, blankets and others are often used as standard of care (SoC) in resource-limited settings when infants are otherwise not in Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC). METHODS: In this pilot study, we evaluate the feasibility of a conductive thermal mattress (CTM) using phase change materials as a low-cost warmer. We conducted a prospective multicentre open

Thermal conductance of atomic-scale glass reaches 40% of quantum limit.

Heat dissipation limits the performance of nanoscale electronic and quantum devices, yet the fundamental limits of phonon-mediated heat transport at the atomic scale remains unknown. By contrast, atomic-scale electron transport has been extensively studied over the past decades using electronic break-junction platforms. Here we show a custom-fabricated, picowatt-resolution scanning thermal probe that uses thermal feedback to create phononic break junctions at the ultimate atomic scale. We report the formation of atomic junctions of amorphous silicon dioxide (a-SiO2)-an archetypal glass-capturi

Rheology-guided multiscale engineering of microvoid-suppressed thermally conductive adhesives.

Vertically stacked electronics require thermal interface adhesives that conduct heat through confined bondlines while retaining adhesion after placement. Yet, highly filled ceramic adhesives are still commonly designed as bulk composites, with performance pursued by increasing filler loading or filler conductivity. This view overlooks how heat transport and adhesion are determined within the formed bondline, where filler connectivity, shear-dependent processability, wetting, and trapped air collectively govern performance. Here, we introduce a rheology-guided bondline densification strategy fo

Structural Effect of Polyimide Precursors on Highly Thermally Conductive Graphite Films.

In this study, polyimide (PI) with high carbonization yield was used as a precursor to prepare graphite films with high thermal conductivity. The crystallinity, grain size, and thermal conductivity of the graphite films were characterized and found to vary according to the chemical structure of the PI precursor. Aromatic PIs containing ortho-substituted hydroxyl groups in the PI main chain (DHB-BPDA) were synthesized by the polycondensation reaction of 3,3'-dihydroxybenzidine (DHB) and 3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA). The DHB-BPDA is converted to a polybenzoxazole (PBO) st

Black-hole-inspired thermal trapping with graded heat-conduction metadevices.

The curved space-time produced by black holes leads to the intriguing trapping effect. So far, metadevices have enabled analogous black holes to trap light or sound in laboratory spacetime. However, trapping heat in a conductive environment is still challenging because diffusive behaviors are directionless. Inspired by black holes, we construct graded heat-conduction metadevices to achieve thermal trapping, resorting to the imitated advection produced by graded thermal conductivities rather than the trivial solution of using insulation materials to confine thermal diffusion. We experimentally

Efficient Fabrication of PVDF Separators with Excellent Thermal Stability and High Ionic Conductivity by Melt Blending for Lithium Metal Batteries.

Lithium (Li) metal batteries represent a transformative candidate for high-end energy storage due to their ultra-high energy density. However, commercial polyolefin separators suffer from poor thermal stability and insufficient electrolyte wettability, resulting in high interfacial resistance and inferior compatibility that severely restrict their practical applications. To address these issues, we report the fabrication of LMB separators using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as the matrix and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) as the diluent via melt blending. The PD46 separator, fabricated with an optim

Study of Dielectric and Thermal Conductivity Properties of Recyclable Epoxy Resin Reinforced with SiO2-Coated Poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) Fibers.

Epoxy resins are widely used in electronic packaging and electrical insulation, but their permanent cross-linked networks and low intrinsic thermal conductivity restrict material recycling and heat dissipation. In this work, a recyclable epoxy composite was developed by combining a dual-dynamic epoxy network with silica-coated poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) fibers. The composite architecture integrates thermally activated network rearrangement, amine-induced matrix degradation, electrically insulating fibrous heat transport, and recovery of the reinforcing phase within a single material sys

Ionic liquid-functionalized reduced graphene oxide-aramid nanofiber composite films for enhanced thermal conductivity, electromagnetic interference shielding, and mechanical properties.

The escalating integration of wireless technologies and compact electronic devices has intensified the demand for high-performance, light weight, thermally conductive and flexible electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials. In this work, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([BMIM][Br]), a hydrophilic ionic liquid (IL), was used to non-covalently functionalize reduced graphene oxide (rGO), which was further incorporated into an aramid nanofiber (ANF) matrix by vacuum-assisted filtration to fabricate rGO@IL/ANF composite films. Enhancing the Thermoelectric Performance of n-Type Mg3.2Sb1.5Bi0.5 by Reducing Lattice Thermal Conductivity through the Incorporation of Chlorine-Containing Compounds.

Mg3Sb2-based thermoelectric materials are characterized by their economic efficiency, nontoxicity, and environmental friendliness and represent a highly promising and eco-friendly functional material for midtemperature applications. To achieve a higher thermoelectric performance, we introduced two compounds, LaCl3 and CeCl3, into Mg3.2Sb1.5Bi0.5 under the guidance of first-principles calculations. The Mg3.2Sb1.5Bi0.5 + 0.03CeCl3 sample reached a maximum ZT value of approximately 1.6 at 723 K. The calculations indicate that two n-type dopants, LaCl3 and CeCl3, can adequately improve the band st

Achieving Ultralow Lattice Thermal Conductivity and High Thermoelectric Performance in GeTe Alloys via Introducing Cu2Te Nanocrystals and Resonant Level Doping.

The binary compound of GeTe emerging as a potential medium-temperature thermoelectric material has drawn a great deal of attention. Here, we achieve ultralow lattice thermal conductivity and high thermoelectric performance in In and a heavy content of Cu codoped GeTe thermoelectrics. In dopants improve the density of state near the surface of Femi of GeTe by introducing resonant levels, producing a sharp increase of the Seebeck coefficient. In and Cu codoping not only optimizes carrier concentration but also substantially increases carrier mobility to a high value of 87 cm2 V-1 s-1 due to the

Effect of side-chain π-π stacking on the thermal conductivity switching in azobenzene polymers: a molecular dynamics simulation study.

The light switchable thermal conductivity displayed by some polymers makes them promising for applications like data storage, temperature regulation and light switchable devices. In this study, the mechanism of thermal conductivity switching in poly[6-(4-phenyldiazenyl phenoxy)hexyl metharylate] is studied using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The π-π stacking and amorphous polymer structures are specifically prepared through different simulation procedures, and the thermal conductivity of these structures is calculated. It is found that due to the π-π stacking structure, the thermal cond

Growth Temperature Alters the Thermal Sensitivity of Mesophyll Conductance in Wild and Cultivated Tomato.

Mesophyll conductance (gm) is a key component of internal CO2 diffusion and can limit photosynthesis in C3 leaves. Temperature responses of gm are commonly treated as intrinsic properties of the leaf, yet it remains unclear whether they acclimate to growth conditions. Here, we tested whether growth temperature alters the thermal sensitivity of gm and whether this differs between wild and cultivated tomato. We compared the wild species Solanum pennellii and the cultivated Solanum lycopersicum cv. M82 grown under four temperature regimes (16°C/10°C to 34°C/28°C, day/night). Using combined gas ex

Anomalous enhancement of thermal conduction across twisted van der Waals heterointerfaces.

The advent of interlayer twist has introduced a groundbreaking paradigm, unveiling novel physical phenomena spanning from correlated insulating states to superconductivity. This unprecedented platform facilitates the manipulation of electrons and extends its capabilities to the effective control of bosons. For phonons, a consensus has been reached that interlayer twist greatly suppresses phonon transport as it breaks the symmetry of the lattice. Here, we report a counterintuitive experimental observation in which the interlayer twist can significantly promote the transportation of phonons acro

Silver Conductive Adhesives with Long Pot Life and Stable Electrical-Thermal Performance.

This study systematically investigates the formulation-property relationships of epoxy-based silver conductive adhesives by varying silver filler architecture, total filler loading, and organic carrier design. Rotational viscometry, four-point probe measurements, thermal conductivity analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were employed to elucidate the correlations among rheological behavior, conductive network formation, and electrical-thermal transport properties. All formulations incorporate dicyandiamide (DICY) as a latent curing agent, in combination with a thermally activated a

Highly Thermally Conductive Triple-Level Ordered CNT/PVA Nanofibrous Films.

The escalating thermal power density in electronic devices necessitates advanced thermal management technologies. Polymer-based materials, prized for their electrical insulation, flexibility, light weight, and strength, are extensively used in this field. However, the inherent low thermal conductivity of polymers requires enhancement for effective heat dissipation. This work proposes a novel paradigm, emphasizing ordered structures with functional units, to create triple-level, ordered, low-filler loading of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) nanofibrous films. Modulating thermal conductance at ligand/nanocrystal interfaces via oxygen-coordinated ligands.

The interfacial thermal conductance (hlig-NC) between a cadmium selenide (CdSe) nanocrystal (NC) and three related organic ligands-olealdehyde, oleyl alcohol, and oleic acid-was investigated computationally. These ligands have the same carbon backbone but differ in the number and type of oxygen-coordinated headgroups (carbonyl and/or hydroxyl), leading to distinct bonding geometries involving monodentate and bidentate bonds. For a fully encapsulated NC, hlig-NC increases in the order of olealdehyde, oleic acid, and oleyl alcohol ligands. To isolate the contributions of hlig-NC from each headgr

Thermal Insulation Foam of Polystyrene/Expanded Graphite Composite with Reduced Radiation and Conduction.

Expanded graphite (EG) with high infrared (IR) absorption is incorporated at low concentrations (≤2 wt%) into polystyrene (PS) foams to reduce radiative thermal conductivity and solid thermal conductivity, which account for 20~40% and 10~30% of total thermal conductivity, respectively. After systematically and quantitatively investigating thermal insulation behavior in PS/EG foams, it was found that the inclusion of 1 wt% EG in 25-fold expanded PS/EG foam blocks over 90% of the radiative thermal conductivity, with only a marginal increase in heat conduction. A great reduction in total thermal

Enhancing solar steam generation using a highly thermally conductive evaporator support.

Interfacial solar steam generation is an efficient water evaporation technology which has promising applications in desalination, sterilization, water purification and treatment. A common component of evaporator design is a thermal-insulation support placed between the photothermal evaporation surface and bulk water. This configuration, common in 2-dimensional (2D) evaporation systems, minimizes heat loss from evaporation surface to bulk water, thus localizing the heat on the evaporation surface for efficient evaporation. This design is subsequently directly adopted for 3-dimensional (3D) evap

Janus zirconium halide ZrXY (X, Y = Br, Cl and F) monolayers with high lattice thermal conductivity and strong visible-light absorption.

In this work, the structural, mechanical, and electronic properties of Janus zirconium halide monolayers have been systematically investigated using the first-principles calculations. After verifying the mechanical and dynamical stability of these monolayers, their electronic band structures have been predicted. These Janus monolayers have band gaps of 1.51-1.96 eV, which indicates their suitability for visible light absorption. The relaxation time and mobility of charge carriers are estimated using deformation potential theory, and the mobility of these monolayers has been predicted to be of
