Constructal thermodynamics combined with infrared experiments to evaluate temperature differences in cells.

The aim of this work was to evaluate differences in energy flows between normal and immortalized cells when these distinct biological systems are exposed to environmental stimulation. These differences were considered using a constructal thermodynamic approach, and were subsequently verified experimentally. The application of constructal law to cell analysis led to the conclusion that temperature differences between cells with distinct behaviour can be amplified by interaction between cells and external fields. Experimental validation of the principle was carried out on two cellular models exp

Towards a functional model of mental disorders incorporating the laws of thermodynamics.

The current paper presents the hypothesis that the understanding of mental disorders can be advanced by incorporating the laws of thermodynamics, specifically relating to energy conservation and energy transfer. These ideas, along with the introduction of the notion that entropic activities are symptomatic of inefficient energy transfer or disorder, were used to propose a model of understanding mental ill health as resulting from the interaction of entropy, capacity and work (environmental demands). The model was applied to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and was shown to be compatib

Inequalities generalizing the second law of thermodynamics for transitions between nonstationary states.

We discuss the consequences of a variant of the Hatano-Sasa relation in which a nonstationary distribution is used in place of the usual stationary one. We first show that this nonstationary distribution is related to a difference of traffic between the direct and dual dynamics. With this formalism, we extend the definition of the adiabatic and nonadiabatic entropies introduced by M. Esposito and C. Van den Broeck in Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 090601 (2010) for the stationary case. We also obtain interesting second-law-like inequalities for transitions between nonstationary states.

Kinetics and thermodynamics of adsorption for Cd on green manufactured nano-particles.

Magnetic nano-particles CuFe(2)O(4) were successful manufactured from industrial sludge by combination of acid leaching, chemical exchange, and ferrite process. For the first time these recycled nano-particles were used as adsorbent to investigate the kinetics and thermodynamics for adsorption of Cd in aqueous solutions. These experimental results showed that Cd(2+) adsorption efficiency increased from 0.85 to 99.9% when pH increased from 2 to 6. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cd(2+) was found to be 17.54 mg g(-1) under the conditions at pH 6.0, contact time 30 min, and temperature 318 K.

The kinetics and thermodynamics of reversible denaturation of crystalline soybean trypsin inhibitor.

Crystalline soybean trypsin inhibitor protein undergoes denaturation on heating which is reversed on cooling. In the range of temperature of 35 to 50 degrees C. a solution of the protein consists of a mixture of native and denatured forms in equilibrium with each other. The equilibrium is only slowly established and its final value at any temperature is the same whether a heated, denatured solution of the protein is cooled to the given temperature or whether a fresh solution is raised to that temperature. The kinetics of reversible denaturation of the soybean protein as well as the reversal of

Polyethylene Glycol Architecture Governs Interfacial Thermodynamics and Drug Adsorption in Anionic Lipid Microbubbles.

Polyethylene glycol (PEG)-stabilized lipid microbubbles (MBs) are promising ultrasound-responsive drug delivery platforms; however, their optimization remains largely empirical and fails to resolve the interfacial mechanisms governing drug adsorption and stability. Here, we established a thermodynamics-guided framework to determine how PEG grafting density, spanning mushroom to brush conformational regimes, regulates drug adsorption in anionic lipid MBs. Using doxorubicin (DOX) as a model drug, loading was quantified across macroscopic, mesoscopic, and microscopic descriptors, while adsorption

cis-Carboxylate Enhancement of Mn(III)-OH Hydrogen Atom Abstraction through PCET Thermodynamics.

Manganese(III)-hydroxo intermediates are proposed as key hydrogen atom abstraction (HAA) species in manganese-dependent enzymes, yet how first-sphere carboxylate ligands control their proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) thermodynamics remains poorly understood. Here, a cis-(carboxylato)(hydroxo) manganese(III) complex, [MnIII(TBDAP)(OH)(C6H5COO)]+ (1), is investigated as a functional model of the manganese lipoxygenase active site. Comparison with an alkoxide analogue, [MnIII(TBDAP)(OH)(C6H5CH2O)]+ (2), reveals a 3000-fold enhancement in HAA reactivity and a large kinetic isotope effect co

Far-from-equilibrium thermodynamics of the human uterus: A self-organized dissipative structure.

The aim of this study was to know how the human uterine muscle behaves from a thermodynamic point of view in pregnant and non-pregnant states. According to far-from-equilibrium thermodynamics, an open system is far-from-equilibrium when its thermodynamic force varies non-linearly with its thermodynamic flow. These two quantities can be calculated on muscles and therefore on the uterine muscle, using the Huxley formalism. The thermodynamic flow was greater in non-pregnant compared to pregnant uterine muscle, while the thermodynamic force was equal in both cases. There was a linear relationship

Solution Thermodynamics of Methyl, Ethyl, Propyl, and Butyl Lactates in High-Pressure CO2.

The demand for alkyl lactates (methyl, ethyl, propyl, and butyl) has risen significantly due to their unique properties and wide industrial applications. Accurate vapor-liquid equilibrium data are vital for the design and optimization of separation techniques involving these compounds, particularly in systems using supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) as a solvent. In this study, the phase transition of binary systems of CO2 + lactate (methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl) was investigated at various temperatures (313.2, 333.2, 353.2, 373.2, and 393.2 K) and pressures up to 18.48 MPa, using elevated-

Fluorosensing of benzaldehydes by CuI-graphene: A spectroscopy, thermodynamics and docking supported phenomenon.

Benzaldehyde and 4-methyl benzaldehyde constitute a major part of the harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in the environment. Hence, rapid and selective detection of benzaldehyde derivatives are required to minimize the environmental degradation as well as the potential hazards on human health. In this study, the surface of the graphene nanoplatelets were functionalized with CuI nanoparticles for specific and selective detection of benzaldehyde derivatives by fluorescence spectroscopy. CuI-Gr nanoparticles exhibited higher efficiency towards the detection of benzaldehyde derivative

Thermodynamics of benzoquinone-induced conformational changes in nucleic acids and human serum albumin.

Biological macromolecules such as proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates and lipids, play a crucial role in biochemical and molecular processes. Thus, the study of the structure-function relationship of biomolecules in presence of ligands is an important aspect of structural biology. The current communication describes the chemico-biological interaction between benzene metabolite para-benzoquinone (BQ) with B-form of nucleic acids (B-DNA) and human serum albumin (HSA). The binding ability of HSA towards bromocresol green (BCG) was significantly suppressed when exposed to increasing concentrati

The thermodynamics of thinking: connections between neural activity, energy metabolism and blood flow.

Several current functional neuroimaging methods are sensitive to cerebral metabolism and cerebral blood flow (CBF) rather than the underlying neural activity itself. Empirically, the connections between metabolism, flow and neural activity are complex and somewhat counterintuitive: CBF and glycolysis increase more than seems to be needed to provide oxygen and pyruvate for oxidative metabolism, and the oxygen extraction fraction is relatively low in the brain and decreases when oxygen metabolism increases. This work lays a foundation for the idea that this unexpected pattern of physiological ch

Thermodynamics of the Enantiotropic Pharmaceutical Compound Benzocaine and Solubility in Pure Organic Solvents.

The thermodynamic relationship between FI and FII of ethyl 4-aminobenzoate (benzocaine) has been investigated. Slurry conversion experiments show that the transition temperature below which FI is stable is located between 302 K-303 K (29 °C-30 °C). The polymorphs FI and FII have been characterised by infrared spectroscopy (IR), Raman spectroscopy, transmission powder X-ray diffraction (XRPD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The isobaric solid state heat capacities have been measured by DSC. The quantitative thermodynamic stability relationship has been determined in a comprehensive

Individual Based Model Links Thermodynamics, Chemical Speciation and Environmental Conditions to Microbial Growth.

Individual based Models (IbM) must transition from research tools to engineering tools. To make the transition we must aspire to develop large, three dimensional and physically and biologically credible models. Biological credibility can be promoted by grounding, as far as possible, the biology in thermodynamics. Thermodynamic principles are known to have predictive power in microbial ecology. However, this in turn requires a model that incorporates pH and chemical speciation. Physical credibility implies plausible mechanics and a connection with the wider environment. Here, we propose a step

Intrinsic thermodynamics of high affinity inhibitor binding to recombinant human carbonic anhydrase IV.

Membrane-associated carbonic anhydrase (CA) isoform IV participates in carbon metabolism and pH homeostasis and is implicated in the development of eye diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa and glaucoma. A series of substituted benzenesulfonamides were designed and their binding affinity to CA IV was determined by fluorescent thermal shift assay and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). Compound [(4-chloro-2-phenylsulfanyl-5-sulfamoyl-benzoyl)amino]propyl acetate (19) bound CA IV with the K d of 1.0 nM and exhibited significant selectivity over the remaining 11 human CA isoforms. The compoun

Intrinsic thermodynamics of sulfonamide inhibitor binding to human carbonic anhydrases I and II.

Human carbonic anhydrase (CA) I and II are cytosolic proteins, where their expression disorders can cause diseases such as glaucoma, edema, epilepsy or cancer. There are numerous inhibitors that target these isozymes, but it is difficult to design compounds that could bind to one of these proteins specifically. The binding of sulfonamide inhibitor to a CA is linked to several protonation reactions, namely, deprotonation of the sulfonamide group, protonation of the active site zinc hydroxide and the compensating protonation-deprotonation of buffer. By performing binding experiments at various p

Arrhenius thermodynamics and birth defects: chemical teratogen synergy. Untested, testable, and projected relevance.

This article addresses the issue of hyperthermia-induced birth defects with an accompanying additional teratogen, be it a chemical or a physical agent (i.e., a simultaneous "combinational" exposure to two teratogens, one of which is hyperthermia). Hyperthermia per se is a recognized human and animal teratogen. An excellent example of such combinational exposures is an epileptic woman who becomes pregnant while taking valproic acid (VPA) to control seizures. VPA is a recognized chemical teratogen, and fever (hyperthermia) is not an uncommon event during pregnancy. While VPA also may occasionall

Conformation, thermodynamics and stoichiometry of HSA adsorbed to colloidal CdSe/ZnS quantum dots.

Water-soluble luminescent colloidal quantum dots (QDs) have attracted great attention in biological and medical applications. In particular, for any potential in vivo application, the interaction of QDs with human serum albumin (HSA) is crucial. As a step toward the elucidation of the fate of QDs introduced to organism, the interactions between QDs and HSA were systematically investigated by various spectroscopic techniques under the physiological conditions. It was proved that binding of QDs and HSA is a result of the formation of QDs-HSA complex and electrostatic interactions play a major ro

Thermodynamics of adsorption of binary aqueous organic liquid mixtures on a RPLC adsorbent.

The surface excess adsorption isotherms of organic solvents commonly used in RPLC with water as co-eluent or organic modifiers (methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol, acetonitrile and tetrahydrofuran) were measured on a porous silica surface derivatized with chlorotrimethylsilane (C1-silica with 3.92 micromol C1 groups per m2 of SiO2), using the dynamic minor disturbance method. The 5 microm diameter particles were packed in a 150 mm x 4.6 mm column. The isotherm data were derived from signals resulting from small perturbations of the equilibrium between the aqueous-organic solutions and the adsorbent

Thermodynamics of Ras/effector and Cdc42/effector interactions probed by isothermal titration calorimetry.

Proliferation, differentiation, and morphology of eucaryotic cells is regulated by a large network of signaling molecules. Among the major players are members of the Ras and Rho/Rac subfamilies of small GTPases that bind to different sets of effector proteins. Recognition of multiple effectors is important for communicating signals into different pathways, leading to the question of how an individual GTPase achieves tight binding to diverse targets. To understand the observed specificity, detailed information about binding energetics is expected to complement the information gained from the th
