Coping food craving with neurofeedback. Evaluation of the usefulness of alpha/theta training in a non-clinical sample.

The aim of the present study was to explore the usefulness of the alpha/theta (A/T) training in reducing Food Craving (FC) in a non-clinical sample. The modifications of electroencephalographic (EEG) power spectra associated with A/T training was also investigated. Fifty subjects were enrolled in the study and randomly assigned to receive ten sessions of A/T training [neurofeedback group (NFG)=25], or to act as controls [waiting list group (WLG)=25]. All participants were administered the Food Cravings Questionnaire-Trait, the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire and the Symptom Checklist

Theta Oscillations in the Human Medial Temporal Lobe during Real-World Ambulatory Movement.

The theta rhythm-a slow (6-12 Hz) oscillatory component of the local field potential-plays a critical role in spatial navigation and memory by coordinating the activity of neuronal ensembles within the medial temporal lobe (MTL). Although theta has been extensively studied in freely moving rodents, its presence in humans has been elusive and primarily investigated in stationary subjects. Here we used a unique clinical opportunity to examine theta within the human MTL during untethered, real-world ambulatory movement. We recorded intracranial electroencephalographic activity from participants c

Slow modulation of EEG.

Time variation of the successive 2.5 s long EEG theta and alpha band powers during 5 min rest and 4 min hyperventilation (HV) was analyzed by modified Wigner distribution (WD) in 22 subjects. Two main peaks at frequency 0.02 Hz and 0.068 Hz were detected in the WDs of both alpha and theta powers at rest. The HV increased the magnitude of the faster (0.068 Hz) component of both theta and alpha WD's while the slower (0.02 Hz) component was increased only in the theta WD. We hypothesize that this slow brain activity reflects spontaneous periodic changes of cortical excitability with control at th

Changes in the electro-encephalogram related to the menstrual cycle.

A comparison has been made between the electro-encephalograms (EEG) recorded in the premenstrual phase and those recorded at mid-cycle in 25 healthy young women. In only 5 could no difference be discerned visually between the two records obtained from each subject. Eight premenstrual records showed a significant increase in mean alpha frequency and 17 showed an increase in mean alpha amplitude. Theta activity and mild paroxysms were twice as common in premenstrual records, as was an abnormal response to hyperventilation. These findings may correlate with subjective mood changes commonly experi

Hyper-Rigid Phasic Organization of Hippocampal Activity But Normal Spatial Properties of CA1 Place Cells in the Ts65Dn Mouse Model of Down Syndrome.

Down syndrome (DS) in humans is caused by trisomy of chromosome 21 and is marked by prominent difficulties in learning and memory. Decades of research have demonstrated that the hippocampus is a key structure in learning and memory, and recent work with mouse models of DS has suggested differences in hippocampal activity that may be the substrate of these differences. One of the primary functional differences in DS is thought to be an excess of GABAergic innervation from medial septum to the hippocampus. In these experiments, we probe in detail the activity of region CA1 of the hippocampus usi

Hippocampal Place Cell Sequences Are Impaired in a Rat Model of Fragile X Syndrome.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that can cause impairments in spatial cognition and memory. The hippocampus is thought to support spatial cognition through the activity of place cells, neurons with spatial receptive fields. Coordinated firing of place cell populations is organized by different oscillatory patterns in the hippocampus during specific behavioral states. Theta rhythms organize place cell populations during awake exploration. Sharp wave-ripples organize place cell population reactivation during waking rest. Here, we examined the coordination of CA1 place c

Turner's syndrome: a qualitative and quantitative analysis of EEG background activity.

A qualitative and quantitative analysis was performed on the EEG background activity in 62 Danish girls and women with Turner's syndrome (30 with karyotype 45,X and 32 with other karyotypes) whose ages ranged from 6 to 47 years (87% were aged 15 years or more) and age-matched controls. The pooled data and a case-control study showed characteristic features in Turner subjects, including: (1) more rapid frequency, larger amplitude and lower amount of alpha waves, (2) higher amount of theta waves, (3) larger amplitude and higher amount of delta waves and (4) larger amplitude and higher amount of

Comparison of proximal isovelocity surface area method with pressure half-time and planimetry in evaluation of mitral stenosis.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to 1) compare the accuracy of the proximal isovelocity surface area (PISA) and Doppler pressure half-time methods and planimetry for echocardiographic estimation of mitral valve area; 2) evaluate the effect of atrial fibrillation on the accuracy of the PISA method; and 3) assess factors used to correct PISA area estimates for leaflet angulation. BACKGROUND: Despite recognized limitations of traditional echocardiographic methods for estimating mitral valve area, there has been no systematic comparison with the PISA method in a single cohort. METHODS: Area estimat

Synchronization between frontal eye field and area V4 during free-gaze visual search.

Information flow between the prefrontal and visual cortices is critical for visual behaviors such as visual search. To investigate its mechanisms, we simultaneously recorded spike and local field potential (LFP) signals in the frontal eye field (FEF) and area V4 while monkeys performed a free-gaze visual search task. During free-gaze search, spike-LFP coherence between FEF and V4 was enhanced in the theta rhythm (4-8 Hz) but suppressed in the alpha rhythm (8-13 Hz). Cross-frequency couplings during the Cue period before the search phase were related to monkey performance, with higher FEF theta

Cortical origin of theta error signals.

A multi-scale approach elucidated the origin of the error-related-negativity (ERN), with its associated theta-rhythm, and the post-error-positivity (Pe) in macaque supplementary eye field (SEF). Using biophysical modeling, synaptic inputs to a subpopulation of layer-3 (L3) and layer-5 (L5) pyramidal cells (PCs) were optimized to reproduce error-related spiking modulation and inter-spike intervals. The intrinsic dynamics of dendrites in L5 but not L3 error PCs generate theta rhythmicity with random phases. Saccades synchronized the phases of the theta-rhythm, which was magnified on errors. The evolution of neurophysiological features in holoprosencephaly.

The evolution of EEG, visual and auditory evoked responses (VER and AER) and sleep is described in three cases of semilobar holoprosencephaly. During the neonatal period, the waking EEG was characterized by almost continuous high amplitude rhythmic alpha-theta activity in case 1 and 2, which became discontinuous during quiet sleep. Moderate amplitude rhythmic alpha-theta waves were seen in case 3. This rhythmic alpha-theta activity gradually disappeared with increasing age, being replaced by non-specific slow dysrhythmia. In case 3, the subsequent EEGs were characterized by focal spikes at 4 m

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy in Recurrent MDD Patients With Residual Symptoms: Alterations in Resting-State Theta Oscillation Dynamics Associated With Changes in Depression and Rumination.

Many patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) suffer from residual symptoms. Rumination is a specific known risk factor for the onset, severity, prolongation, and relapse of MDD. This study aimed to examine the efficacy and EEG substrates of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) in alleviating depression and rumination in an MDD population with residual symptoms. We recruited 26 recurrent MDD individuals who had residual symptoms with their current antidepressants to participate in the 8-week MBCT intervention. We evaluated the efficacy and changes in the dynamics of resting-state th

Perturbation of theta-gamma coupling at the temporal lobe hinders verbal declarative memory.

BACKGROUND: Phase-amplitude cross-frequency coupling (PAC) is characterized by the modulation of the power of a fast brain oscillation (e.g., gamma) by the phase of a slow rhythm (e.g., theta). PAC in different sub- and neocortical regions is known to underlie effective neural communication and correlates with successful long-term memory formation. OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: The present work aims to extend earlier observational data, by probing the functional role of theta-gamma PAC in the left temporal cortex in humans during verbal long-term memory encoding. METHODS: In three double-blinded, pl

[Frontal bilateral synchronous theta-waves and the resting EEG coherence in children aged 7-8 and 9-10 with learning difficulties].

The resting state cortical functional connectivity was studied in children of 7-8 (N = 29) and 9-10 (N = 23) years with learning difficulties whose EEG showed the frontal bilateral synchronous theta waves (FTW) and in the control children of 7-8 (N = 32) and 9-10 (N = 16) years who did not experience school difficulties and whose EEG did not show signs of abnormality. The functional connectivity was estimated in the theta, alpha1, alpha2, and beta1 frequency bands via measuring the coherence for the resting EEG that was free from any abnormal patterns. Compared to control children, there was a

Attenuation of homeostatic sleep response and rest-activity circadian rhythm in vitamin D deficient mice.

The link between vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and sleep disturbances has long been suggested. However, the direct causality between VDD, sleep disturbances, and circadian rhythm remains unclear. We aimed to characterize sleep-wake behavior and circadian rhythms in an animal model of VDD. VDD was induced by feeding vitamin D-deficient chow, and we analyzed sleep and circadian rhythm parameters. During light period, VDD mice exhibited reduced wake with more frequent wake bouts and increased NREM sleep time. However, during dark period, the wake EEG power spectrum peaked at theta band frequency, an

Neurofeedback training for tourette syndrome: an uncontrolled single case study.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (TS) is characterized by motor and vocal tic manifestations, often accompanied by behavioral, cognitive and affective dysfunctions. Electroencephalography of patients with TS has revealed reduced Sensorimotor Rhythm (SMR) and excessive fronto-central Theta activity, that presumably underlie motor and cognitive disturbances in TS. Some evidence exists that neurofeedback (NFB) training aimed at enhancing SMR amplitude is effective for reducing tics. The present report is an uncontrolled single case study where a NFB training protocol, involving combined SMR uptrain

[Electroencephalographic characteristics of cerebral atherosclerosis in patients of different ages].

On the basis of clinical and EEG studies of 500 patients from the age of 45-105 with diffuse cerebral atherosclerosis the author comes to the following conclusion. With an intensification of atherosclerosis there is an increase of alpha-rhythm disorganization, a slowing down of the frequency, a drop in the amplitude and index of alpha-rhythms, a decrease in the electrical brain reactivity with an increase of delta-and theta-waves. It is shown that the EEG changes are to a greater extent determined by the severity of cerebral atherosclerosis than by age factors. Normal variants of the EEG in pa

Behavioral and electroencephalographic correlates of 40-Hz EEG biofeedback training in humans.

Two groups of eight adults successfully trained with biofeedback for increases in 40-Hz EEG responses in left or right hemispheres also demonstrated significant 40-Hz EEG increases during baseline periods, and increases in the contralateral hemisphere during training periods. No changes in heart rate, 40-Hz EMG, or 21- or 31-Hz beta, alpha, or theta EEG occurred over training days. Three subjects returning for additional training demonstrated suppression of 40-Hz EEG. A group of four subjects experiencing daily bidirectional training produced substantial within-session control of 40-Hz EEG but

No aftereffect of transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) on theta activity during an inter-sensory selective attention task.

BACKGROUND: Selective attention is essential to filter the constant flow of sensory information reaching the brain. The contribution of theta neuronal oscillations to attentional function has been the subject of several electrophysiological studies, yet no causal relationship has been established between theta rhythms and selective attention mechanisms. OBJECTIVE AND HYPOTHESES: We aimed to clarify the causal role of theta oscillations in inter-sensory selective attention processes by combining transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) and electrophysiology (EEG) techniques.
