The thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) refers to a group of clinical conditions caused by compression of nerves and blood vessels in congenital or acquired anatomical narrowing of the upper thoracic aperture. This includes the anatomical structures, such as the scalene muscles, the first rib, a possibly present cervical rib, the costoclavicular joint or the pectoralis minor muscle. Isolated venous compression is also known as thoracic inlet syndrome (TIS). The symptoms are diverse and the path to a correct diagnosis is often prolonged. In the absence of anatomical anomalies, conservative treatment

BACKGROUND: Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) is a debilitating neurologic condition that is commonly encountered in routine neurosurgical practice. It causes severe pain, paresthesias, and weakness in the affected limb and can negatively impact patients' quality of life. Classically, TOS is caused by compression of the neurovascular bundle in the thoracic outlet region, often by soft tissue or bony anomalies. A relationship to cervicothoracic scoliosis has not been previously reported. The purpose of this case series is to report on the clinical and radiographic findings, surgical interventions,

The authors present immediate and long-term results of treatment of 117 patients with superior thoracic outlet syndrome (STOS). There were different reasons for compression of neu- rovascular fascicle in outlet of the thorax. The costaclavicular syndrome was a reason in 48 patients, additional cervical ribs had 36 patients. Skalenus syndrome was noted in 26 cases, rudimentary cervical ribs or hypertrophy of cervical vertebrae C7 had 7 patients. Raynaud's syndrome took place in 19 cases. The required volume of diagnostic procedures and surgical treatment of STOS were determined according to the

Arterial thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) causes ischemic symptoms; it is the rarest type, occurring in 5% of all TOS cases. This paper is a case report of a 38-year-old male patient diagnosed with arterial TOS, displaying symptoms of acute critical limb ischemia caused by thromboembolism. Brachial artery of the patient has been diffusely damaged by repeated occurrence of thromboembolism. It was thought to be not enough only decompression of subclavian artery to relieve the symptoms of hand ischemia; therefore, bypass surgery using reversed great saphenous vein was performed.

Thoracic outlet syndrome occurs due to compression of the neurovascular structures as they exit the thorax. Subclavian arterial compression is usually due to a cervical rib, and is rarely associated with thromboembolic stroke. The mechanism of cerebral embolisation associated with the thoracic outlet syndrome is poorly understood, but may be due to retrograde propagation of thrombus or transient retrograde flow within the subclavian artery exacerbated by arm abduction. We report an illustrative patient and review the clinical features, imaging findings and management of stroke associated with

Calcifying fibrous pseudotumor (CFP) is a relatively rare benign mass lesion that generally involves the soft tissues. We report a case of CFP occurring in an extremely rare location. The patient is a 34-year-old woman presenting symptoms of numbness of her right upper extremity caused by a CFP in her thoracic outlet and we discuss its clinical significance with a review of the literature.

Thoracic outlet syndrome is caused by a large number of etiologies, which can affect the elements of the neurovascular bundle in combination or separately. The radiology department offers many imaging modalities which can assist in determining which structures may be involved as well as suggest possible etiology. The interventional radiologist, often working in conjunction with the surgeon, can assist in the treatment of many arterial or venous disorders, such as stenosis or thrombosis commonly seen in patients with Thoracic outlet syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: The anatomy of the upper cervical region, in the presence of structural anomalies favours the compression of the brachial plexus and/or subclavian vessels, giving rise to the thoracic inlet syndrome (SATS). Neurological involvement is more common than vascular involvement (95 and 5% respectively); the latter is known as the arterial SATS. The forms of clinical presentation of arterial SATS are very variable and have different prognoses: it may present as acute distal ischaemia with a variable course, peripheral embolism or as a non-serious condition such as Raynaud's phenomenon.

21 patients with thoracic outlet syndrome (t.o.s.) were operated on in the Department of Neurosurgery of MMA in Lódź between 1982-1991. Early and long-term results of treatment were analyzed in the group of 13 cases. In early postoperative period 5 patients were free of pain and neurologic or vascular disturbances in the upper limb. In other 6 cases pain disappeared partially and mild neurological or vascular syndromes persisted. Altogether satisfactory results of treatment were obtained in 8 patients (85%). There was some improvement in 2 patients but pain and neurological or vascular disorde

Thirty-nine reoperations in 38 patients with recurrent symptoms of neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome were performed by the supraclavicular approach. Scarring around the brachial plexus was the primary cause in 59% of procedure, whereas in 41% of reoperations residual osseous and soft tissue anomalies were identified in the supraclavicular area and were responsible for recurrence of symptoms. Anterior and middle scalenectomy and neurolysis of the brachial plexus were the procedures of choice. Complications included pleural entry (62%), lymphatic leak (10%), brachial plexus and phrenic nerve i

The authors have studied with a light reflection rheograph (LRR) 112 cases: 54 patients with suspected "thoracic outlet syndrome" (TOS) in the functional phase, 28 patients with phlebothrombosis localized in upper limbs, and a control group of 30 healthy subjects to evaluate the upper limbs' venous outlet. They recorded a good correlation among results obtained with LRR, clinical examination, Doppler, and phlebographic examination. The data obtained lead them to propose this methodology as an important examination in the evaluation of upper thoracic pathology.

BACKGROUND: Thrombotic venous thoracic outlet syndrome (T-vTOS) including Paget-Schrotter syndrom is a rare form of upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (UEDVT) that mainly affects young, active individuals. Its optimal management remains debated and medium-term outcomes are poorly documented.
METHODS: Consecutive patients from the vascular medicine department of a university hospital with T-vTOS between 2014 and 2024 were included in a retrospective study. Patients were stratified according to the presence of post-thrombotic syndrome with the modified Villalta score at last follow-up (<5 vs

Droopy shoulder syndrome (DSS) manifests as discomfort or abnormal sensations in the neck, shoulder, chest, and upper limbs, resulting from tension on the brachial plexus caused by abnormally low shoulder positioning. This case report examines the presentation and management of a patient with DSS, a rare but crucial precursor to thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS). The patient, a 22-year-old male, presented with progressive pain and tingling in his left upper limb, shoulder, chest, and neck. Comprehensive examination and imaging studies led to a diagnosis of DSS. Physical therapy prevented progress
