Two cases of late sequelae of accidental perivascular injection of Thorotrast (thorium dioxide) during carotid arteriography are presented. The complaints of the patients and the clinical findings are due to topical granulomatous and fibrous reactions with compression of the carotid artery and cranial nerves, and influence upon larynx and trachea. For future decades it will still be necessary to be aware of this possible cause of neck tumours with oto-laryngeal and neurological symptoms.

Thorotrast (Thorium dioxide) has been used in the past as a radiological contrast medium. Its use resulted in serious side-effects, often after a delay of many years. There was an increased incidence of tumours and blood dyscrasias. Meningeal fibrosis, hydrocephalus and progressive lesions of the cauda equina have followed its injection into the sub-arachnoid spaces. A patient with such a cauda equina lesion is reported.

A patient is reported with a painless, progressive cauda equina lesion due to arachnoiditis, the result of the contrast medium 'Thorotrast' (thorium dioxide) introduced into the brain over 30 years previously. Contrast medium introduced into the lumbar spine can give rise to aseptic adhesive inflammation (arachnoiditis). It rarely gives rise to clinical problems but, when it does so, is usually associated with back pain and only very rarely with progressive neurological deficit.

A novel and rapid method is introduced for determining thorium (Th) and uranium (U) concentrations in archaeological lead and related compounds to be used in astroparticle physic. This method involves chromatographic pre-concentration and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Combined data from mass spectrometry and gamma-ray spectrometry measurements are presented. Excellent results were achieved in terms of reliability and sensitivity (ngˑkg-1), even without introducing Th and U isotopes as tracers.

225Ac is a promising candidate medical radionuclide for targeted alpha therapy of advanced stage cancers. One of the main production pathways is the high-energy proton spallation of thorium-based targets, that requires an efficient, nuclide-selective separation method to recover 225Ac from hundreds of co-produced spallation and fission products. Extravasation of thorium dioxide after transcervical carotid angiography has resulted in persistent open draining neck wounds. These difficult problems have remained a challenge for the treating head and neck surgeon. Neck dissection has been the mainstay of treatment in the past; however, this has been fraught with complications. The application of doxycycline sclerosis is described in the successful resolution of a large thorotrast granulomatous neck wound. A review of the literature and the management options of Thorotrast granulomas are discussed.

Analysis of four cases of hemangiosarcoma of the liver and review of the literature indicate that these tumors are either predominantly cystic and fairly well differentiated or are more solid and poorly differentiated. Well-differentiated hemangiosarcomas may resemble peliosis hepatis or other benign conditions. The tumor was associated disseminated intravascular coagulation and fibrinolysis syndrome in one of our cases. One of our patients had received thorium dioxide (Thorotrast) but none seemed to have been exposed to arsenicals or to vinyl chloride.

This is a report on a 59-year-old patient in whom the synchronous occurrence of benign cholangiomas and a cholangiocarcinoma was observed in the liver 43 years after single intraarterial application of thorotrast. The current study analyzed and interpreted airborne radiometric data from Ilesha's basement complex rock and its surroundings. Carcinoma of the frontal sinus is relatively rare. We describe a case of two independent carcinomas, squamous cell and adenoid cystic, in the right frontal sinus region of a patient who received sinus irrigation with an unidentified, substance 30 years previously.
