Effects of Incubation Light on Behaviour, Growth Performance, Blood Parameters, and Digestive Enzymes in Post-Hatch Layer Chicks.

Manipulation of light during incubation may have an effect on post-hatch chicks through the role of prenatal stage. The effects of providing different wavelengths of light (white, blue, and green lights, dark as control) during incubation on the growth performance, organ development, immune response, stress related hormones, digestive enzymes and behaviour of post-hatch chicks were investigated for 1-42 days. A total of 60 chicks per light treatment in three batches were used in this study. The results showed that the percentage of chicks accessing to feed and water resources appeared not to b

[Gammagraphy of somatostatin receptors in an ACTH secreting thymic carcinoid].

Ectopic ACTH secretion represent 10 to 15% in the causes of Cushing's syndrome. Carcinoid tumor of the thymus is a rare neoplasm and is currently believed to arise from population of thymic cells of neural crest origin. We present the case of a 43-year-old man with a corticotropin hormone (ACTH) secreting thymus carcinoid. 111In-octreotide scintigraphy demonstrated an intense uptaken on the lesion. The surgical specimen measured 17 x 18 x 18 cm and weighed 1. 25 kg. Postoperatively the patient was treated by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. A follow-up 111In-octreotide scintigraphy was normal. V

[Effect of the changes of epiphysial functions on the central and peripheral immune system in mice].

Endocrine function of thymus estimated by titer of thymic serum factor is inhibited in pubertal mice CBA/Ca under conditions of pharmacological inhibition of epiphysis function by beta-adrenoblocking agent anapriline. After blinding and epithalamine and melatonine introduction the content of thymic hormone considerably increases. Melatonine is characterized by manifestation of effect in earlier periods of research. In mice with hyperfunction of epiphysis mass, cell character of thymus and spleen increase as well as the content of thymosine-like activity in supernatant of cultures of splenocyte

Effects of human chorionic somatomammotropin and human chorionic gonadotropin on skin homografts in rats.

The action of HCS and HCG on cell-mediated immunity has been investigated. Full-thickness skin homografts were performed in 40 whole adult female Wistar rats. Brown rats of the A X C strain were selected as donors. The animals were divided into four groups injected with HCS, HCG, HCS + HCG, and saline. The graft rejection time and the wet and dry weight of thymus and spleen were evaluated. No hormonal treatment showed any effect on skin graft survival. Thymus weight, both wet and dry, decreased significantly by treatment with HCP or HCS + HCG. No modification was observed in spleen weight. The

Early pregnancy regulates the expression of prolactin and its receptor in the thymus, the liver, the spleen and lymph nodes in sheep.

As a pituitary hormone, prolactin (PRL) is also synthesized by immune system cells, and exerts its effects on the immune system by binding to its receptor (PRLR) via endocrine and paracrine/autocrine pathways. The immune organs adapt to the presence of fetal alloantigens during pregnancy, and the immune system is composed of primary organs and secondary organs. The objective of this study is to analyze the effects of early pregnancy on expression of PRL and PRLR in maternal immune organs in sheep. In this study, the thymus, lymph node, the spleen and the liver were sampled at day 16 of the est

Parathyroid adenoma in third pharyngeal pouch cyst as a rare case of primary hyperparathyroidism.

The primitive thymus and inferior parathyroid derive from the third branchial cleft. During embryonic development, these structures descend, reaching their final localisation. Third branchial cleft anomalies present usually as a fistula, abscess or cyst. However, there are no reports on parathyroid adenomas in the literature other than as a morphological possibility. We describe the case of a 47-year-old man, who had been diagnosed with arterial hypertension and who presented with a cervical mass at the edge of the lower third of the sternocleidomastoid muscle. On ultrasonography, the mass had

Specific binding of melatonin by purified cell nuclei from spleen and thymus of the rat.

In the present paper, we show that pineal hormone melatonin interacts with purified cell nuclei from rat spleen and thymus. Binding of 2-[125I]iodomelatonin ([125I]melatonin) by cell nuclei fulfills all criteria for binding to a receptor site. Binding exhibited properties such as dependence on time and temperature as well as reversibility, saturability, high affinity, and specificity. Results suggested binding to single classes of binding sites. The dissociation constants (Kd) for the binding sites in the spleen and thymus nuclei were 68 and 102 pM, respectively. These data are in close agreem

The importance of the nurse cells and regulatory cells in the control of T lymphocyte responses.

T lymphocytes from the immune system are bone marrow-derived cells whose development and activities are carefully supervised by two sets of accessory cells. In the thymus, the immature young T lymphocytes are engulfed by epithelial "nurse cells" and retained in vacuoles, where most of them (95%) are negatively selected and removed when they have an incomplete development or express high affinity autoreactive receptors. The mature T lymphocytes that survive to this selection process leave the thymus and are controlled in the periphery by another subpopulation of accessory cells called "regulato

[Characteristics of the pineal gland and thymus relationship in aging].

The review presents the interference between thymus and pineal gland during their involution. The research data of thymus peptides influence on pineal gland and pineal peptides on thymus are summarized. Analysis of these data showed that pineal peptides (Epithalamin, Epitalon) had more effective geroprotective effect on thymus involution in comparison with geroprotective effect of thymic peptides (Thymalin, Thymogen) on involution of pineal gland. The key mechanisms of pineal peptides effect on thymus dystrophy is immunoendocrine cooperation, which is realized as transcription's activation of

Lung and Thymic Carcinoids.

Carcinoids of the lung and thymus are rare thoracic cancers. In general, lung carcinoid tumors have a favorable prognosis, particularly when diagnosed at an early stage and treated with surgical resection. Thymic neuroendocrine tumors may be associated with multiple endocrine neoplasia-1 syndrome, tend to have a more aggressive natural history, and relatively frequently secrete ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone.

Non-reproductive systems and the pineal gland.

The paper reviews the data accumulated on the interrelationship between the pineal gland and the central nervous system as evidenced by induced neuroanatomical, biochemical and hormonal changes taking place in one system following the activation or inhibition of the other. The possible role of the pineal in modifying behaviour and its involvement in mental impairment is consequently discussed. Further questions dealt with are, whether in addition to the pineal effect via the hypothalamic-pituitary axis on the peripheral non-reproductive glands, thyroid and adrenals, a direct feedback mechanism

Melatonin Prevents Thymic Atrophy but Does Not Protect Against Disruption of T Cell Maturation Related to Cyclophosphamide Exposure.

Increased oxidative stress and apoptosis are key mechanisms of thymic atrophy induced by cyclophosphamide (CYP). Atrophy leads to changes in the thymic microenvironment and disrupts T cell maturation. The hormone melatonin displays antioxidant and antiapoptotic effects. Here, we tested the hypothesis that melatonin would act as a cytoprotective agent against the harmful effects of CYP in the thymus. A single dose of CYP (300 mg/kg; ip) was injected in male C57BL/6 mice pretreated or not with melatonin (10 mg/kg/day, ip) for 4 days. Atrophy, oxidative stress and apoptosis markers, and T cell su

Fast and reliable dissection of porcine parathyroid glands - A protocol for molecular and histological analyses.

As calcium and phosphorus are of vital importance for life, physiological activity of the parathyroid glands (PTGs) is crucial to maintain mineral homeostasis and bone mineralization. However, PTG-specific molecular routes in response to environmental factors and intrinsic hormonal responses are not yet fully understood. Since nutrient requirements, pathophysiology and functional genomics of pigs are similar to those of humans, pigs might be a suitable model to study the holistic gene expression and physiological aspects of the parathyroid gland, which could be used in both animal sciences and

Primary neuroendocrine carcinoma of thymus: a rare cause of Cushing's syndrome.

Thymomas constitute majority of the thymic neoplasms. In contrast, neuroendocrine tumors (carcinoid and neuroendocrine carcinoma) of thymus are extremely rare. Thymic carcinoids may present rarely with Cushing's syndrome due to the ectopic production of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). Recognition of this association is imperative for appropriate management of patients. We describe three cases of rare atypical carcinoid tumor (neuroendocrine carcinoma) of the thymus. Case 1, of a 26-year-old man presenting with Cushing's syndrome, case 2--a 23-year-old female with Cushingoid features, and C

The uptake and metabolism of cyclophosphamide by the ovary.

The uptake of cyclophosphamide (CTX) and its metabolites was evaluated by injecting adult female rats with 14C-CTX on the morning of metestrous or proestrus. Rats were sacrificed 1 and 5 hours after 14C-CTX injection. The ovary, uterus, spleen, thymus, liver, kidney, anterior pituitary, duodenum, skeletal muscle and whole blood were isolated from each rat. Samples were combusted using a biological material oxidizer and the resulting CO2 was absorbed and counted. Liver and kidney had the highest uptake of 14C-radioactivity. The ovary appears to have 14C uptake comparable to the thymus and other

The prolactin receptor in the fetal rat: cellular localization of messenger ribonucleic acid, immunoreactive protein, and ligand-binding activity and induction of expression in late gestation.

The cellular distribution and developmental expression of the PRL receptor (PRLR) in the late gestational fetal rat were examined by in situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, and radioligand binding. Antisense and sense strand RNA probes encoding the long and short isoforms of the rat PRLR were hybridized to tissue sections under stringent conditions. Messenger RNA (mRNA) encoding the two isoforms of the receptor was expressed widely in tissues derived from all three germ layers; these included various tissues not known previously to contain lactogenic receptors, such as the olfactory neuro

Effects of growth hormone in enhancing thymic regrowth and T-cell reconstitution.

Evaluation of: Napolitano LA, Schmidt D, Gotway MB et al. Growth hormone enhances thymic function in HIV-1-infected adults. J. Clin. Invest. 118, 1085-1098 (2008). Age-induced atrophy of the thymus results in a compromised immune system characterized by a restricted T-cell receptor repertoire, skewed towards memory T cells and a global reduction in immune responsiveness. This has important clinical implications in immune recovery from lymphopenic states, for example, after cytoablative treatment for cancer therapy, in conditioning regimes for bone marrow transplants and severe viral infections

Thymic expression of insulin-related genes in an animal model of autoimmune type 1 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Insulin and multiple other autoantigens have been implicated in the pathogenesis of autoimmune type 1 diabetes, but the origin of immunological self-reactivity specifically oriented against insulin-secreting islet beta-cells remains obscure. The primary objective of the present study was to investigate the hypothesis that a defect in thymic central T-cell self-tolerance of the insulin hormone family could contribute to the pathophysiology of type 1 diabetes. This hypothesis was investigated in a classic animal model of type 1 diabetes, the Bio-Breeding (BB) rat. METHODS: The expre
