BACKGROUND: Consensus regarding the difference of postoperative hypoparathyroidism following completion thyroidectomy (CT) and total thyroidectomy (TT) has yet to be reached. We compare the occurrence of postoperative hypoparathyroidism between CT and TT for differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC), and explore the predictive factors for postoperative hypoparathyroidism.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 221 consecutive patients underwent CT or TT for DTC between February 2012 and March 2014. Patients' demographic and clinical data of the two groups were analyzed.
RESULTS: There were 57 CTs an

INTRODUCTION: Reoperative thyroidectomy, defined as surgery for recurrent thyroid disease following prior thyroid resection, is widely perceived to carry a greater likelihood of complications than first-time thyroidectomy due to anatomic distortion and scar formation. Despite recognition of these challenges, the existing evidence is heterogeneous and lacks comprehensive synthesis. Thus, this meta-analysis aims to evaluate the comparative complication rates between reoperative and first-time thyroidectomy.
METHODS: PubMed, Ovid Embase, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, Scopus, and Web of Science were

BACKGROUND: Thyroid cancer diagnoses are often discovered after diagnostic thyroid lobectomy. Completion thyroidectomy (CT) may be indicated for intermediate or high-risk tumors to facilitate surveillance and/or adjuvant treatment. The completeness of thyroid resection and the safety of CT compared to total thyroidectomy (TT) is unclear. We assessed outcomes after TT or CT to determine completeness of resection and risk of complications.
METHODS: Patients undergoing TT or CT between 2000 and 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. Pathology, unstimulated thyroglobulin (uTg), parathyroid hormone (

BACKGROUND: Total thyroidectomy (TT) and subtotal thyroidectomy (ST) are worldwide treatment options for multinodular non-toxic goitre in adults. Near TT, defined as a postoperative thyroid remnant less than 1 mL, is supposed to be a similarly effective but safer option than TT. ST has been shown to be marginally safer than TT, but it may leave an undetected thyroid cancer in place.
OBJECTIVES: The objective was to assess the effects of total or near-total thyroidectomy compared to subtotal thyroidectomy for multinodular non-toxic goitre.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Library, MED

BACKGROUND: The Dysphonia Severity Index (DSI) is an objective multiparametric acoustic calculation of vocal function; however, its changes after thyroidectomy have not yet been described.
METHODS: Patient-reported symptoms, as well as auditory perceptual, acoustic, and videolaryngostroboscopic (VLS) data, were collected prospectively before and after thyroidectomy. Voice outcomes (normal versus negative voice outcome [NVO]) at 6 months after thyroidectomy were based on a combination of voice symptoms and objective findings. The DSI was assessed over the peri-operative course, and differences

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the early surgical outcomes of endoscopic and conventional open thyroidectomies in patients with papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC).
METHODS: Between September 2005 and December 2007, 499 patients with PTMC were enrolled. 275 patients underwent gasless endoscopic thyroidectomy via the axillary route (endo group), and 224 patients underwent conventional open thyroidectomy (open group). We analyzed the patient's clinico-pathologic characteristics and surgical completeness between the two groups.

For papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) surgery requiring total thyroidectomy and central lymph node dissection, it is controversial whether the bilateral axillo-breast approach robotic thyroidectomy (BABA RT) can replace the open thyroidectomy (OT). To evaluate the efficacy of two surgical approaches. Relevant literatures were searched from PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Library. Studies comparing two surgical approaches and meeting the inclusion criteria were selected. Compared with OT, BABA RT showed a similar incidence of postoperative complications, including recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy, h

BACKGROUND: Thyroid surgery is associated with a number of surgical complications including recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury and hypoparathyroidism. The existing methods share the same principle-the mobilization of the thyroid from the lateral side. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety of a novel technique of thyroidectomy-tension-free thyroidectomy (TFT) based on the medial approach to the laryngeal nerves and parathyroid glands (PTGs).
METHODS: The study was conducted between August 2021 and July 2022 in Saint Petersburg State University Hospital. A total of 261 patients w

BACKGROUND: Transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA) has been shown to be safe and has similar outcomes as open thyroidectomy for selected patients. It is not clear if transoral robotic thyroidectomy (TORT) may extend transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy to more complex thyroid operations. The study aimed to compare the safety and outcomes of TORT with those of TOETVA.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all patients who had TORT and TOETVA performed by a single surgeon from June 2017 to May 2019. Intrathoracic goiter and combined operations were excluded. Surgical outco

OBJECTIVE: Minimally invasive thyroidectomy can be categorized into either video-assisted method or remote access thyroidectomy (RAT). Although RAT provided excellent cosmetic results, some debate about the advantages and disadvantages remains in different countries. Thus, this study aimed to compare the surgical results between endoscopic thyroid surgery and conventional thyroidectomy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study retrospectively reviewed the conventional and endoscopic thyroidectomy performed at our institution from September 2011 to July 2012. Overall, 30 patients were recruited for th

BACKGROUND: Despite the new technical alternative offered by the robotic surgery for minimally invasive thyroid surgery, the role of the robotic thyroidectomy (RT) in thyroid cancer has been highly disputed. This paper gives a systematic review and meta-analysis aiming to compare RT and open thyroidectomy (OT) based on the surgical outcomes and oncologic results.
METHODS: Relevant literature was searched from various databases up to July 2016, including PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web of science and Clinical Trials. gov. Outcomes of interest included patient characteristics, su

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic thyroidectomy (ET) has gained acceptance among surgeons as its feasibility has been well-documented. The aim of this systematic review with meta-analysis has been to assess and validate the safety and feasibility of ET when compared to conventional open thyroidectomy (COT) for papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) and to verify other potential benefits and drawbacks.

UNLABELLED: We aimed to test the hypothesis that Minimally Invasive Video-assisted Thyroidectomy (MIVAT) affords comparable safety and efficacy as to the open conventional surgery, when dealing with patients with unilateral thyroid nodules or follicular lesions, in terms of cosmetic results, intraoperative and postoperative complications, postoperative pain and hospital stay.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a single-blinded randomised controlled trial comparing the MIVAT with conventional thyroidectomy. The primary endpoints of the study were measurement of postoperative pain after 24 and 48

Preoperative optimization and patient education have allowed for the transition of thyroid surgery to the outpatient setting over the last few decades. Performing these operations in the outpatient setting has proven to be cost-effective and safe in the adult population. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of outpatient thyroid surgery in the pediatric population. A retrospective review from December 2015 to February 2019 of patients under the age of 18 years of age undergoing thyroidectomy performed by two endocrine surgeons at a large academic was performed. Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) has proven effective for intraoperative verification of RLN function in the conventional thyroid surgery. However, no studies have performed a systematic evidence-based assessment of this novel health technology in endoscopic and robotic thyroidectomy. Evidence-based criteria were used in a systematic review of relevant literature for years 2000-2015. Four electronic databases (CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Cochrane and EMBASE) were used to retrieve relevant reports published from January 1, 2000 to September 1, 2016. The search terms included "endoscopic thyroidectom
