Meniscal root tears, less common than meniscal body tears and frequently unrecognized, are a subset of meniscal injuries that often result in significant knee joint disorders. The meniscus root attachment aids meniscal function by securing the meniscus in place and allowing for optimal shock-absorbing function in the knee. With root tears, meniscal extrusion often occurs, and the transmission of circumferential hoop stresses is impaired. This alters knee biomechanics and kinematics and significantly increases tibiofemoral contact pressure. In recent years, meniscal root tears, which by definit

BACKGROUND: Rupture of the knee menisci is a common injury that can have implications for other conditions, such as osteoarthritis. The fracture toughness of soft tissue (Jc) is a mechanical property that characterizes its resistance to tear extension. To date, Jc of the meniscus has not been quantified.
METHODS: Cyclic tensile tests were conducted on meniscus samples to determine Jc and explore its characteristics. Initially, the study investigated the impact of an initial notch on the ultimate tensile stress. This allowed for an understanding of how the presence of a notch affects its struc

Discoid lateral meniscus (DLM) is a variant of meniscal histomorphology that often presents in young, active pediatric populations. Patients may present with mechanical symptoms, joint line pain, swelling, and loss of motion especially with lack of terminal knee extension. DLM are prone to tearing, most frequently with horizontal patterns in children and complex patterns in adults. The PRiSM classification and assessment of DLM provide a comprehensive approach to evaluating DLMs arthroscopically, focusing on the following four factors: (1) meniscal width, (2) meniscal height, (3) stability, an

BACKGROUND: Fresh-frozen allografts are the current standard in meniscal allograft transplant (MAT) surgery, due to their availability, ease of preservation, and affordability. However, fresh-frozen grafts are associated with several clinical challenges such as graft shrinkage and extrusion, among many others.
PURPOSE: To present the current knowledge on the use of fresh meniscal allografts, presenting whether benefits associated with fresh grafts provide sufficient evidence to support their use in clinical practice.
STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review; Level of evidence, 5.

PURPOSE: The reliable data on the incidence of hypermobile lateral meniscus (HLM) and its clinical manifestations, diagnostic methods and therapeutic approaches are limited. This systematic study aimed to review available treatment options for HLM and the outcomes of each approach.
METHODS: A systematic search was performed in four electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science) to identify studies in which arthroscopically confirmed cases of HLM were treated surgically or nonsurgically, and the required data comprising study characteristics, patient data, treatment approaches a

Medial meniscus injury is one of the most prevalent knee disorders, with posterior root tears occurring in approximately 10% to 21% of affected individuals. A posterior root tear disrupts the meniscus's continuous annular structure, compromising its ability to absorb pressure and protect the knee's articular cartilage. If left untreated, this can result in increased stress on the cartilage, leading to conditions such as varus deformity and accelerated joint degeneration. Partial removal (resection) of the medial meniscus further exacerbates these issues, often leading to quicker joint deterior

We report here on a new arthroscopic direct repair technique for a radial tear of the posterior root of the medial meniscus (PRMM) using a posterior trans-septal portal. Radial tears of the PRMM are commonly observed in the elderly population of Korea and Japan, and the life style of these people requires squatting and kneeling down in daily life. A radial tear of the PRMM results in the loss of hoop tension and this accelerates degenerative changes in the knee joint and causes early osteoarthritis. Several reports in the medical literature have focused on various repair techniques for these t

BACKGROUND: Large radial tears of the meniscus involving the avascular region can compromise meniscal function and result in poor healing and subsequent osteochondral degeneration. Augmentation of surgical repairs with adipose-derived stromal vascular fraction (SVF), which contains mesenchymal stromal cells, may improve meniscal healing and preserve function (ie, chondroprotection).
PURPOSES: (1) To develop a goat model of a radial meniscal tear with resulting osteoarthritis and (2) to explore the efficacy of a 1-step procedure utilizing infrapatellar fat pad-derived SVF cells seeded in a pho

BACKGROUND: The meniscus-bone angle (MBA), defined as the angle formed by the lateral meniscus with respect to the lateral tibial slope, has recently been identified as an intrinsic factor associated with primary anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. However, no studies have investigated the influence of MBA and other intrinsic factors excluding the influence of extrinsic factors, especially the level of sports activity.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose was to evaluate the intrinsic factors of primary ACL injury while controlling for the effect of sports activity level. It was hypothesize

BACKGROUND: Meniscus injuries lead to increased knee joint instability. Currently, however, it is unclear whether a relevant medial meniscus part resection leads to an increased ventral tibia translation with intact anterior cruciate ligament. The aim of our study was therefore to clinically examine the stabilizer function of at least 30% resected medial meniscus for anterior tibial translation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective study, 18 patients with unilateral medial meniscus lesion were treated before and after arthroscopic medial meniscus resection. They were treated on the heal

Meniscal ramp lesions (RAMP) are longitudinal tears at the meniscocapsular or meniscotibial attachments of the posterior horn of the medial meniscus, commonly associated with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears. Their preoperative detection on standard MRI remains limited, especially for "hidden" variants. Magnetic resonance arthrography (MRA) may theoretically enhance visualization of the posteromedial compartment through capsular distension and improved tissue contrast; however, its diagnostic superiority remains to be validated. This pictorial review introduces a conceptual MRA-based fra

» Arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM) for the treatment of degenerative meniscal tears has been controversial, and quantification of its benefits has been limited by methodological problems and varying clinical definitions.» Among the problems with APM are patients crossing over from the treatment arm to which they have been randomized to another treatment and analyzed by the randomized treatment, whether they received that treatment or not.» Aggregated information suggests that a program of structured exercise is a reasonable initial treatment for degenerative meniscal tears with APM rese

BACKGROUND: Medial meniscus posterior root tears (MMPRTs) reproduce the biomechanics of subtotal meniscectomy. Repair is favored, but the role of all-inside repair (AR) remains unclear relative to transtibial pull-out (TP). This study aimed to review the biomechanical and clinical evidence on AR for MMPRTs.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO). MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, and the Cochrane Central Re

Lateral discoid meniscus is the most common meniscal congenital variant. A lateral discoid meniscus manifests with a spectrum of findings, including abnormalities in size and shape, disorganized collagen architecture, and/or hypermobility, predisposing the meniscus to early degeneration and tearing. The purpose of this narrative review is to discuss the anatomy of the lateral discoid meniscus and to highlight MRI findings that should be included in radiology reports to guide management.

BACKGROUND: Various suture configurations are available for medial meniscus posterior root tear (MMPRT) repair. The modified Mason-Allen (MMA) technique has been proposed as a refixation technique for MMPRT instead of the conventional 2 simple stitches (TSS). This is in view of its superior biomechanical characteristics.
PURPOSE: To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare MMA and TSS configuration techniques for MMPRT repair and identify any differences between the 2 techniques in terms of clinical outcomes, medial meniscal extrusion (MME), and postoperative healing.

BACKGROUND: Meniscal ramp lesions have been defined as longitudinal vertical peripheral tears of the medial meniscus involving the posterior meniscocapsular ligament, meniscotibial ligament, and/or the red-red zone of the posterior horn. They are heavily associated with anterior cruciate ligament injuries, and because of their potentially important biomechanical role in knee stabilization, injuries to this region may require surgical repair. However, due to their location and lack of general knowledge regarding their different types and associated appearances on magnetic resonance imaging, ram

The goal of arthroscopic partial meniscectomy is to preserve a stable rim of meniscal cartilage, removing only unstable, diseased tissue. As one of the most common orthopedic procedures performed in the United States, arthroscopic partial meniscectomy developed as an alternative to open total meniscectomy that leads to degenerative changes in the knee over time. The short-term results of this meniscal-sparing procedure are favorable. Evidence of long-term results is limited to outcome measures that are not standardized. However, the long-term trend of clinical outcomes is satisfactory, whereas

This study assessed the healing potential of longitudinal or transverse incisions in the peripheral, central, and inner rim regions of rabbit medial menisci. Longitudinal and transverse incisions were made in 48 male New Zealand white rabbits. The incisions were either repaired with sutures or left open. The effect of joint motion on repair was also evaluated. In one group, longitudinal incisions were made in the peripheral, central, and inner rim regions of the meniscus. Some of these incisions were sutured, whereas others were not repaired. In another group, transverse incisions were made in

Cruciate ligament reconstruction and meniscal surgery are frequently performed for restoration of knee joint stability and function after cruciate ligament and meniscus injuries, and they contribute to the prevention of secondary osteoarthritis. In cruciate ligaments, the most common procedure is anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. Meniscal surgery most frequently consists of partial meniscectomy and suture repair, rarely of a meniscus transplant. In patients with symptoms following surgery, imaging reevaluation for a suspected intra-articular source of symptoms is indicated and m
