Antimicrobial effects of a stannous fluoride toothpaste in distinct oral microenvironments.

BACKGROUND: Clinical research has shown a relationship between microbial accumulations and oral diseases such as gingivitis and caries. The mouth harbors large densities of bacteria in distinct oral microenvironments, that is, dental plaque on teeth, saliva, and soft tissues such as the tongue, cheek, and gingiva. In this home-use study, the authors compared the effects of brushing with a newly formulated stannous fluoride toothpaste and a sodium monofluorophosphate dentifrice on bacteria of distinct oral microenvironments. METHODS: Adult participants completed a washout phase before baseline

Bridge solubility in liquid metals enables the synthesis of ultrathin fluorine-doped tin oxide.

Fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) exhibits the nexus of transparency, electrical conductivity, heat resistivity, and reduced reliance on critical minerals, making it vital in solar panels, IR-reflective glass, and optical electronics. This work leverages the synergistic combination of two emerging liquid metal-based concepts-liquid metal doping and liquid metal bridge solubility-for the generation of ultrathin FTO layers, reducing reliance on current energy-intensive and hazardous chemical vapour deposition (CVD) processes. Here, tin (Sn) and silver fluoride (AgF) are melted together to form a ho

Labelling of leucocytes with colloidal technetium-99m-SnF2: an investigation of the labelling process by autoradiography.

Autoradiography of smears and frozen sections of labelled cell suspensions was used to study the distribution of radioactivity in and among blood cells labelled in either whole blood or leucocyte-rich plasma (LRP) with technetium-99m-SnF2 colloid. The tracer proved selective for neutrophils: the labelling probability (relative to that for erythrocytes) for each cell type in LRP (mean of five samples) was: neutrophils, 9.4; lymphocytes, 3.7; monocytes, 3.0; eosinophils 1.4; erythrocytes, 1.0. When labelling was carried out in whole blood (five samples), 74.5% +/- 8.3% of the cell-bound radioact

Unexpected sequel to silver fluoride followed by stannous fluoride treatment of root stumps supporting an overlay denture in an aged-care patient.

An institutionalized high care dementia patient, who is unable to maintain his own oral health, presented with five lower anterior carious root stumps supporting a lower overlay denture. Due to limited cooperation, his root stumps were treated with only silver fluoride followed by stannous fluoride applied topically on a 4-monthly cycle. Almost one and a half years after his initial application, there were unexpected calculus formations on the root stumps accompanied by marked gingival inflammation and gingival hyperplasia. At this point prognosis was considered very poor. Because the patient'

Stability against brushing abrasion and the erosion-protective effect of different fluoride compounds.

This study aimed to analyse the impact of brushing on the protective effect of different fluoride solutions on enamel and dentin erosion. Bovine enamel and dentin specimens were rinsed once with TiF4, AmF, SnF2 (0.5 M F, 2 min) or water (control). Specimens were either left unbrushed or brushed with 10, 20, 50, 100 or 500 brushing strokes in an automatic brushing machine (2 N, non-fluoridated toothpaste slurry). Ten specimens per group were eroded with hydrochloric acid (HCl) (pH 2.3) for 60 s, and calcium release into the acid was determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Additionally, en

Dissolution studies of human enamel treated with aluminum solutions.

Dissolution tests using human enamel were conducted after treatment with aqueous solutions of various aluminum (Al) salts. All Al compounds, except those which formed stable Al-complexes, greatly decreased enamel dissolution in a pH 4 acetate buffer. A comparison with fluoride compounds demonstrated that Al was equivalent to SnF2 and more effective than NaF and Na2PO3F. Furthermore, the reduction in enamel dissolution produced by Al persisted after more than three hr of successive demineralization, which was twice as long as that observed with a pH 4.5 SnF2 solution.

Calcium hexa-kis(dihydrogen-phosphito)-stannate(IV), Ca[Sn(H2PO2)6], with some remarks on the so-called Ge2(H2PO2)6 structure type.

The title compound, Ca[Sn(H2PO2)6], was formed after a few days when tin(II) fluoride was allowed to react with phosphinic acid at ambient conditions. The structure consists of chains of Ca(2+) and Sn(4+) cations in octa-hedral sites with -3 symmetry bridged by bidentate hypophosphite anions. The chains are hexa-gonally close packed along [001]. The discovery of the compound and the successful structure refinement provides strong evidence that an isostructural compound, originally described as the mixed-valence compound, Ge2[H2PO2]6 [Weakley (1983 ▶).
