A prospective study of tinea capitis in children: making the diagnosis easier with a dermoscope.

INTRODUCTION: Tinea capitis is a scalp infection caused by different fungi. Etiological diagnosis is based on suggestive clinical findings and confirmation depends on the fungus growth in culture. However, it is not always possible to perform this test due to lack of availability. The association of clinical and dermatoscopic findings in suspected cases of tinea capitis may help the identification of the etiological agent, facilitating precocious, specific treatment. MATERIALS AND METHOD: We report a prospective descriptive analytical study of 34 children with tinea capitis. We performed a tr

The survey of tinea capitis and scalp dermatophyte carriage in nursing home residents.

Tinea capitis is a contagious dermatophyte infection of scalp and associated hairs. On the other hand, asymptomatic carriage is a status of positive dermatophyte scalp culture, but without signs or symptoms of tinea capitis, and no evidence of hair shaft invasion confirmed by direct microscopy. Tinea capitis and asymptomatic carriage mostly occur in children, but adult females are becoming another population in recent decades. In this study, we focused on the prevalence and related fungi of tinea capitis and asymptomatic carriage in elderly by the shampoo brush method, as well as the source of

Systemic antifungal therapy for tinea capitis in children: An abridged Cochrane Review.

BACKGROUND: The comparative efficacy and safety profiles of systemic antifungal drugs for tinea capitis in children remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess the effects of systemic antifungal drugs for tinea capitis in children. METHODS: We used standard Cochrane methodological procedures. RESULTS: We included 25 randomized controlled trials with 4449 participants. Terbinafine and griseofulvin had similar effects for children with mixed Trichophyton and Microsporum infections (risk ratio 1.08, 95% confidence interval 0.94-1.24). Terbinafine was better than griseofulvin for complete cu

Different trichoscopic features of tinea capitis and alopecia areata in pediatric patients.

Background. Diagnosis of patchy hair loss in pediatric patients is often a matter of considerable debate among dermatologists. Trichoscopy is a rapid and noninvasive tool to detect more details of patchy hair loss. Like clinical dermatology, trichoscopy works parallel to the skin surface and perpendicular to the histological plane; like the histopathology, it thus allows the viewing of structures not discovered by the naked eye. Objective. Aiming to compare the different trichoscopic features of tinea capitis and alopecia areata in pediatric patients. Patients and Methods. This study included

Comma hairs: a dermatoscopic marker for tinea capitis: a rapid diagnostic method.

BACKGROUND: Dermatoscopy and videodermatoscopy have been used for several years in the diagnosis of skin disorders. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine whether tinea capitis (TC) shows characteristic videodermatoscopy features that may facilitate its differentiation from alopecia areata (AA). METHODS: Two patients with TC caused by Microsporum canis, confirmed by mycological culture and fluorescence under Wood lamp, were examined with videodermatoscopy and results were compared with videodermatoscopy results of 12 patients with AA. RESULTS: The distinctive and most prominent feature of TC was

Tinea capitis in the elderly. A report on two cases caused by Trichophyton tonsurans.

The clinical picture in tinea capitis due to Trichophyton tonsurans varies. In this report, 2 elderly female patients with T. tonsurans infections of the scalp mimicking eczema seborrhoeicum and discoid lupus erythematosus, respectively, are described. Recurrence of the infection in the first case was probably related to reduced fungal sensitivity to griseofulvin, as indicated in in vitro studies.

Can Serum UL16 Binding Protein 3 Tell Us More about Tinea Capitis?

BACKGROUND: The most frequent pediatric dermatophyte infection globally is tinea capitis (TC). Hair follicles have a variety of immunological defense mechanisms to stop infections from entering it. Natural-killer group 2, member D receptor ligands include unique long binding protein 3 (ULBP3) has a significant impact on the regulation of immunological reactions that are innate and adaptive. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to evaluate the serum level of ULBP3 in patients with TC, its clinical significance, relation to types of dermatophytes, disease severity, and pathogenesis. Folliculotropic mycosis fungoides in a pediatric patient mimicking black dot tinea capitis.

Immunosuppression following organ transplantation is a known risk factor for the development of lymphoproliferative disorders. Mycosis fungoides, a rare entity in pediatric patients, has seldom been reported as a post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder. We report a case of folliculotropic mycosis fungoides in a pediatric patient following liver transplantation that was initially diagnosed as tinea capitis.

Tinea capitis among primary school children in some parts of central Nigeria.

Tinea capitis is the most common superficial mycosis in children of school age. Although it is of public health importance, it is not a reportable or notifiable disease; therefore, actual prevalence figures are unknown in many endemic areas. The aim of this work was to determine the prevalence of tinea capitis among primary school children in two states in central Nigeria, highlighting the main aetiological agents of the infection and possible predisposing factors. A total of 28 505 primary school children aged between 3 and 16 years were recruited for the study, from 12 primary schools in two

Trichophyton rubrum-induced inflammatory tinea capitis in a 63-year-old man.

Tinea capitis caused by Trichophyton rubrum is a rare event worldwide. We report on an elderly otherwise healthy man with inflammatory fungal disease of the scalp caused by this pathogen. He had no signs of concomitant mycosis of the skin and nails and no underlying immunosuppressive disease. The fungal infection primarily had been misdiagnosed in terms of a pyoderma. Failure of antibiotic treatment, a positive mycological study and molecular diagnostics eventually led to the correct diagnosis. After systemic and local administration of terbinafine the lesion improved totally.

Wood's lamp for early detection of Microsporum Canis tinea capitis in children.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric alopecia is increasingly common, influenced by conditions like alopecia areata and infections such as tinea capitis, primarily caused by Microsporum canis. Diagnosing tinea capitis in primary care is challenging due to limited access to advanced tools, leading to treatment delays. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluates the effectiveness of Wood's lamp for early diagnosis of tinea capitis and its role in distinguishing it from other pediatric alopecia types. METHODS: Fifty pediatric patients under 12 with alopecia were enrolled from March 2023 to March 2024. Data collected inc

Coexistence of Malassezia Species and Microsporum canis in the Lesions of Adult with Tinea Capitis.

Tinea capitis, primarily caused by dermatophytes such as Trichophyton and Microsporum species, is a superficial fungal infection affecting the scalp and hair, commonly observed in prepubertal children but rare in adults. Here we report a unique case of an adult female with tinea capitis presenting as diffused alopecia and erythema inflammation on the scalp's apex, mimicking seborrheic dermatitis. Examination of the hair and scalp using fluorescence microscopy and fungal culture identified the presence of hyphae from Malassezia globosa, Malassezia furfur and Microsporum canis. The patient under

A prospective clinical and trichoscopic study of tinea capitis in children during treatment.

Tinea capitis (TC) is the most common dermatophyte infection in children. Fungal culture; although a gold standard of diagnosis, requires time for the final results which can favor horizontal transmission. Trichoscopy helps in rapid diagnosis and could work as a monitoring tool during antifungal therapy. The objective of this study is to provide a clinico-trichoscopic evaluation and follow-up of children presenting with TC during treatment with either griseofulvin or terbinafine. One hundred and twenty children clinically diagnosed with TC confirmed by potassium hydroxide microscopy, were divi

Persistent Desquamation of the Scalp as a Manifestation of Tinea Capitis in Sub-Saharan Children.

Scalp hyperkeratosis of childhood is most often associated with atopic or seborrheic dermatitis. However, in black children can be associated with tinea capitis. We undertook a retrospective study in all Sub-Saharan children presenting with chronic scalp scaling between June 2010 and June 2013, to determine whether chronic desquamation of the scalp is a clinical manifestation of tinea capitis. The criterion used to diagnose tinea capitis was a positive mycolological culture. Of the 23 Sub-Saharan African children attended, 12 (43.4%) presented with chronic scalp flaking. Mycological culture wa
