BACKGROUND: Jinqing granules which are made of a mixture extract that contains Radix Tinosporae and Canarii fructus in proportions according to a longstanding formula have a good effect on the prevention and treatment of gastric ulcer disease. It has not been through safety through systematic toxicological studies, however. To provide basis for clinical application, we performed safety pharmacology and subchronic toxicity experiments in specific pathogen-free Sprague-Dawley rats.
RESULTS: In safety pharmacology experiments, Jinqing granules had no evident adverse effects on the central nervou

HP-1 a herbal formulation comprising of Phyllanthus niruri and extracts of Terminalia belerica, Terminalia chebula, Phyllanthus emblica and Tinospora cordifolia has been evaluated for hepatoprotective activity against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced toxicity. Results show that HP-1 reversed the leakage of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and glutamate pyruvate transaminase (GPT) and prevented the depletion of glutathione (GSH) levels in a primary monolayer culture of rat hepatocytes (in vitro). HP-1 attenuated the serum toxicity as manifested in elevated levels of transaminases (glutamate oxalo

The prevalence of allergic rhinitis is increasing globally due to various causes. It affects the quality life of a large group of people in all around the world. Allergic rhinitis still remains inadequately controlled with present medical means. The need of continuous medical therapy makes individuals anxious about the side effects of the drugs. So there is a need for an alternative strategy. Effects of spirulina, tinospora cordifolia and butterbur were investigated recently on allergic rhinitis in just very few investigations. Spirulina represents a blue-green alga that is produced and commer

The Thai Karen, the largest hill-tribe in Thailand, guard substantial ethnomedicinal plant knowledge, as documented in several studies that targeted single villages. Here, we have compiled information from all the reliable and published sources to present a comprehensive overview of the Karen ethnomedicinal plant knowledge. Our dataset covers 31 Karen villages distributed over eight provinces in Thailand. We used the Cultural Importance Index (CI) to determine which species were the most valuable to the Karen and the Informant Consensus Factor (ICF) to evaluate how well distributed the knowled

Tinospora sinensis (Lour.) Merr. has traditionally been used for its anti-inflammatory properties. Tinosinenside A (Tis A), a major sesquiterpene glycoside isolated from this plant, has shown neuroprotective activity; however, its effects on Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related neuroinflammation remain unclear. This study evaluated the effects of Tis A on behavioral impairment, neuroinflammation, and amyloid-β (Aβ) pathology in APPswe/PSEN1dE9 (APP/PS1) mice. APP/PS1 mice received oral Tis A for 6 months and were evaluated at 11 months of age using behavioral, histopathological, biochemical, and m

Chronic venous ulcers (CVUs) pose a persistent challenge in clinical practice, especially among elderly individuals with comorbidities such as hypertension and venous insufficiency. Characterised by delayed healing, frequent recurrence, and impaired quality of life, these ulcers often remain unresponsive to conventional treatment. In recent years, Ayurveda has gained attention for its approach to chronic wound care, offering fewer side effects and greater cost-effectiveness. This report details the case of a 74-year-old male with a history of varicose veins. He presented with a chronic, non-he

Canine dirofilariasis is a common tropical parasitic disease of companion animals, caused by infestation of Dirofilaria immitis filarids within the pulmonary arteries and extending into the right heart. Increased reports of adverse reactions elicited by current microfilaricidal agents against D. immitis such as neurological disorders, circulatory collapse and potential resistance against these agents, warrant the search for new agents in forms of plant extracts. The use of plant extracts in therapeutic medicine is commonly met with scepticism by the veterinary community, thus the lack of focus

The skin microbiome maintains cutaneous homeostasis through colonization resistance and immune modulation, targeted prebiotic interventions however remain largely unexplored. The present study addresses this lacuna effectively demonstrating the ability of plant-derived prebiotics to selectively modulate key skin commensals and pathogenic bacteria thereby unraveling a new dimension to use of prebiotics in skin care. Linum usitatissimum (flaxseed) and Allium sativum (garlic) extracts used herein exhibited complete growth inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus within 6 h, while Curcuma amada (mango

Columbin (CLB) is the most abundant (>1.0%) furan-containing diterpenoid lactone in herbal medicine Tinospora sagittate (Oliv.) Gagnep. The furano-terpenoid was found to be hepatotoxic, but the exact mechanisms remain unknown. The present study demonstrated that administration of CLB at 50 mg/kg induced hepatotoxicity, DNA damage and up-regulation of PARP-1 in vivo. Exposure to CLB (10 μM) induced GSH depletion, over-production of ROS, DNA damage, up-regulation of PARP-1 and cell death in cultured mouse primary hepatocytes in vitro. Co-treatment of mouse primary hepatocytes with ketoconazole (

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is a potential target with disease modifying benefits against Alzheimer's disease (AD). Repurposing of FDA approved drugs against EGFR have shown beneficial effect against AD but are confined to quinazoline, quinoline and aminopyrimidines. Futuristically, the possibility of acquiring drug resistance mutation as seen in the case of cancer could also hamper AD treatment. To identify novel chemical scaffolds, we rooted on phytochemicals identified from plants such as Acorus calamus, Bacopa monnieri, Convolvulus pluricaulis, Tinospora cordifloia, and Withani

Allergies have been known to be an abnormally vigorous immune response in which the immune system fights off an allergen or antigen, initiating mast cells to release histamine into the blood. Substances that prevent mast cells from releasing histamine are considered antiallergic agents. The drugs utilized to treat allergy are mast cell stabilizers, steroids, anti-histamine, leukotriene receptor antagonists, and decongestants. Anti-histamine drugs have side effects such as drowsiness, confusion, constipation, difficulty urinating, blurred vision, etc. The use of medicinal plants for the effecti

The plant extracts of 17 commonly used Indian medicinal plants were examined for their possible regulatory effect on nitric oxide (NO) levels using sodium nitroprusside as an NO donor in vitro. Most of the plant extracts tested demonstrated direct scavenging of NO and exhibited significant activity. The potency of scavenging activity was in the following order: Alstonia scholaris > Cynodon dactylon > Morinda citrifolia > Tylophora indica > Tectona grandis > Aegle marmelos (leaf) > Momordica charantia > Phyllanthus niruri > Ocimum sanctum > Tinospora cordifolia (hexane extract) = Coleus ambonic
