Wet tissue adhesive polymeric powder hydrogels for skeletal muscle regeneration.

Volumetric muscle loss (VML) frequently results from traumatic incidents and can lead to severe functional disabilities. Hydrogels have been widely employed for VML tissue regeneration, which are unfortunately ineffective because of the lack of intimate contact with injured tissue for structural and mechanical support. Adhesive hydrogels allow for strong tissue connections for wound closure. Nevertheless, conventional adhesive hydrogels exhibit poor tissue adhesion in moist, bleeding wounds due to the hydration layer at the tissue-hydrogel interfaces, resulting in insufficient performance. Molecular design of an ultra-strong tissue adhesive hydrogel with tunable multifunctionality.

Designing adhesive hydrogels with optimal properties for the treatment of injured tissues is challenging due to the tradeoff between material stiffness and toughness while maintaining adherence to wet tissue surfaces. In most cases, bioadhesives with improved mechanical strength often lack an appropriate elastic compliance, hindering their application for sealing soft, elastic, and dynamic tissues. Here, we present a novel strategy for engineering tissue adhesives in which molecular building blocks are manipulated to allow for precise control and optimization of the various aforementioned prop

A Biodegradable Multifunctional Film as a Tissue Adhesive for Instant Hemostasis and Wound Closure.

Here, a multifunctional film (MFF) as an alternative tissue adhesive in the form of an interpenetrating network consisting of self-crosslinked aldehyde-functionalized chitosan (AC) and crosslinked poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) further coordinated with Ag+ is reported. The MFF combines enhanced toughness and stretchability, which is attributed to the synergistic effects of the double-network design. Covalent crosslinking maintains the overall integrity of the MFF matrix, while noncovalent crosslinking dissipates energy under deformation. Upon contact, the MFF quickly dries the tissue surface followe

Recent trends in therapeutic strategies for repairing endometrial tissue in intrauterine adhesion.

Intrauterine adhesion (IUA) is a common gynaecological disease that develops from infection or trauma. IUA disease may seriously affect the physical and mental health of women of childbearing age, which may lead to symptoms such as hypomenorrhea or infertility. Presently, hysteroscopic transcervical resection of adhesion (TCRA) is the principal therapy for IUAs, although its function in preventing the recurrence of adhesion and preserving fertility is limited. Pharmaceuticals such as hormones and vasoactive agents and the placement of nondegradable stents are the most common postoperative adju

Skin hypersensitivity following application of tissue adhesive (2-octyl cyanoacrylate).

Tissue adhesives are commonly used for skin closure in both surgical and nonsurgical specialties. Although they are very well tolerated, tissue adhesives can induce a localized allergic response in 0.5% to 14% of patients. Allergic response can result in wound dehiscence, patient discomfort, increased healing time, and suboptimal esthetic results. We present two cases of allergic reaction to anterior neck incisions following topical application of tissue adhesives. The patients were managed with local wound care, steroid administration, and one with subsequent revision surgery. Clinicians who

Development of biodegradable hyper-branched tissue adhesives for the repair of meniscus tears.

UNLABELLED: Meniscus tears are one of the most commonly occurring injuries of the knee joint. Current meniscus repair techniques are challenging and do not bring fully satisfactory results. Tissue adhesives are a promising alternative, since they are easy to apply and cause minimal tissue trauma. In this study, a series of amphiphilic copolymers based on polyethylene glycol, trimethylene carbonate and citric acid were synthesized and subsequently end-functionalized with hexamethylene diisocyanate to form reactive adhesive materials. The shear adhesive strength of the networks to bovine meniscu

A versatile pH sensitive chondroitin sulfate-PEG tissue adhesive and hydrogel.

We developed a chondroitin sulfate-polyethylene glycol (CS-PEG) adhesive hydrogel with numerous potential biomedical applications. The carboxyl groups on chondroitin sulfate (CS) chains were functionalized with N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) to yield chondroitin sulfate succinimidyl succinate (CS-NHS). Following purification, the CS-NHS molecule can react with primary amines to form amide bonds. Hence, using six arm polyethylene glycol amine PEG-(NH2)6 as a crosslinker we formed a hydrogel which was covalently bound to proteins in tissue via amide bonds. By varying the initial pH of the precursor

Modified microkeratome-assisted posterior lamellar keratoplasty using a tissue adhesive.

OBJECTIVE: To compare graft stability and astigmatic change using suture vs tissue adhesive in an experimental model of microkeratome-assisted posterior lamellar keratoplasty. METHODS: A 300-microm-thick partial flap keratectomy was performed in human donor corneoscleral rims using an artificial anterior chamber and a manual microkeratome. The flap stopped at the left central opening border, providing a wide hinge to add stability. After flap reflection, a 6.25-mm trephination was performed to obtain a disc of posterior stroma, Descemet membrane, and endothelium. The disc was positioned in a

Leucocyte adhesion under flow conditions: principles important in tissue engineering.

An understanding of inflammatory responses is important in a wide variety of tissue engineering applications. This review describes the current understanding of a central aspect of inflammatory responses, the adhesion of leucocytes to blood vessel walls prior to their emigration into tissues. These highly specific adhesive interactions are mediated by three main families of receptors: the selectins, integrins, and members of the immunoglobulin superfamily. Under flow conditions, the various receptors make distinct contributions to a multistep process of adhesion in which leucocytes roll, adher

Expression of adhesion molecules on the endothelium of normal tissue vessels and vascular tumors.

BACKGROUND: Endothelial cells are important in initiating adhesive processes between circulating cells and extracellular structures and changes in their distribution are believed to be important in many pathologic conditions. Since little is known about the detailed distribution of adhesion molecules in human endothelium in different sites and circumstances, the present study has undertaken a detailed analysis of 5 of the putative most important adhesion molecules on a wide range of normal tissue endothelium. We have compared this reactivity with that seen in a comprehensive range of vascular

[Complications following temporary occlusion of the nasolacrimal duct with tissue adhesive (Histoacryl)].

This paper presents 4 cases in which the punctum had been temporarily occluded with tissue adhesive, still showing toxic tissue reaction years later. Abscess, dacryocystitis, dacryocystitis with dacryolithiasis, dacryocellulitis and polyposis were found. In the light of these findings and the relevant literature-especially with regard to late injuries-it is not advisable to use tissue adhesive, at least not for the purpose of punctal occlusion.
