The idea of establishing a human tissue bank in Bangladesh was started in 1985. However, in 2003, with the active cooperation of international atomic energy agency (IAEA) and Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission, a tissue bank laboratory was upgraded as a unit for tissue banking and research. Due to increasing demand of allograft, this unit was transformed as an independent institute "Institute of Tissue Banking and Biomaterial Research (ITBBR)" in 2016. This is the only human tissue bank in Bangladesh, which processes human bone and amniotic membrane to provide safe and cost-effective allograf

Allografts are commonly used during sports medicine surgical procedures in the United States, and their frequency of use is increasing. Based on surgeon reports, it is estimated that more than 60 000 allografts were used in knee surgeries by members of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine in 2005. In the United States, there are governmental agencies and other regulatory bodies involved in the oversight of tissue banks. In 2005, the Food and Drug Administration finalized its requirements for current good tissue practice and has mandated new rules regarding the "manufacture" of

Possible adverse events and reactions associated with organ procurement and transplantation from deceased donors require compliance with quality and safety standards. Shortage of organs for transplantation makes it necessary to obtain organs from nonstandard (expanded-criteria) donors. This increases the risk of disease transmission with the graft which is difficult or impossible to identify before transplantation. The long-term access to biologic material of organ donors and recipients proffers the possibility to evaluate serious adverse reactions as well as to improve the quality and safety

The wealth of allogeneic and xenogeneic tissue products available to plastic and reconstructive surgeons has allowed for the development of novel surgical solutions to challenging clinical problems, often obviating the need to inflict donor site morbidity. Allogeneic tissue used for reconstructive surgery enters the tissue industry through whole body donation or reproductive tissue donation and has been regulated by the FDA as human cells, tissues, and cellular and tissue-based products (HCT/Ps) since 1997. Tissue banks offering allogeneic tissue can also undergo voluntary regulation by the Am

BACKGROUND: Perfusing fixatives through the cerebrovascular system is the gold standard approach in animals to prepare brain tissue for spatial biomolecular profiling, circuit tracing, and ultrastructural studies such as connectomics. Translating these discoveries to humans requires examination of postmortem autopsy brain tissue. Yet banked brain tissue is routinely prepared using immersion fixation, which is a significant barrier to optimal preservation of tissue architecture. The challenges involved in adopting perfusion fixation in brain banks and the extent to which it improves histology q

Allografts were first used in reconstructive surgery of the knee early in this century. Their widespread use and acceptance paralleled the development of modern tissue banks and our increased understanding of the immune system. Advantages of allogeneic tissue use include less surgical morbidity, shorter surgical time, smaller incisions, and the wider selection of graft sizes and types of tissue. Disadvantages include the risk of disease transmission, a slower biologic remodeling process, and the potential for a subclinical immune response. Allografts can be obtained in several forms, including

The New South Wales Brain Tissue Resource Centre is a human brain bank that provides top-quality brain tissue for cutting-edge neuroscience research spanning various conditions from alcohol use disorder to neurodegenerative diseases. However, the conventional practice of preserving brain tissue in formalin poses challenges for immunofluorescent staining primarily due to the formalin's tendency, over time, to create cross-links between antigens, which can obscure epitopes of interest. In addition, researchers can encounter issues such as spectral bleeding, limitations in using multiple colors,

The objective was to map the stages and costs of processing donated corneal tissue for transplantation in Eye Banks. The method followed the JBI Institute Reviewer's Manual, and the PRISMA-ScR guidelines were adopted for reporting, to answer the question: "What are the stages and costs of processing donated corneal tissue for transplantation in Eye Banks?" Studies considered for inclusion comprised qualitative, quantitative, mixed-method, observational, experimental, quasi-experimental studies, reviews, institutional documents, manuals, theses, and dissertations, all available in full text and

Three-dimensional (3D) scanning technologies could transform medical practices by creating virtual tissue banks. In bone transplantation, new approaches are needed to provide surgeons with accurate tissue measurements while minimizing contamination risks and avoiding repeated freeze-thaw cycles of banked tissues. This study evaluates three prominent non-contact 3D scanning methods-structured light scanning (SLG), laser scanning (LAS), and photogrammetry (PHG)-to support tissue banking operations. We conducted a thorough examination of each technology and the precision of the 3D scanned bones u

The advent of transcriptomics technologies compatible with formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues has enabled greater opportunities for scientists to interrogate the transcriptome of archived tissues, especially those from rare neurodegenerative diseases. Tissues from brain banks are often placed in fixative for weeks or years due to limitations in resources and storage space. We investigated the impact of long-term fixation for sequencing-based transcriptomics in human formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded lumbar spinal cord and hypothalamic tissues sourced from the Sydney Brain Bank. Liver transplantation (LT) is performed in 27 centres in France, including 7 in Paris. Two of these centres (Cochin and Bicêtre) have a large paediatric activity, either exclusively or alongside adult transplantation. An organ harvesting activity is very often associated with LT. Except for one centre (Strasbourg), LT is associated with other surgical activities. The distribution of livers complies with national rules established by transplanters who have defined priorities in the context of a system based successively on regional priorities then national priorities. We examined whether the introduction of an audit and feedback strategy applied to specimens dissected at the John Hunter Hospital anatomical pathology department improved the number of formalin fixed tumor specimens sampled by anatomical pathology registrars for the Hunter Cancer Biobank. During the audit period (1/7/16 to 30/6/17) a total of 949 tumor specimens were sampled for the biobank compared with 393 of the previous year (1/7/15 to 30/6/16) resulting in a 141% increase in specimens biobanked. A targeted group of previously underrepresented specimen types, including brain, lung, and lym

Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is an accepted curative therapy for many malignant and non-malignant conditions affecting children and adults. Where possible, stem cells for HSCT are provided by human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-matched, related donors. Only 30% of patients have a suitable matched donor; for other patients, donors are sought from bone marrow registries or public umbilical cord blood (UCB) banks. While public UCB banks have been established to support transplant programs in Australia and internationally, parents also have the option of storing their child's UCB in a

This paper is a written version of a lecture given during the celebration of Professor Rudolf Klen's 90th birthday. Dr. Klen played by far the major part in the introduction and the development of Tissue Banking in Europe. His concept of a tissue bank envisaged the storage of all types of cell, tissue and organ that physicians and surgeons might need for the treatment of their patients. There has been much progress towards this goal, but still the final objective remains elusive. This review of the current position starts with the recognition that some tissues are required to comprise or inclu

The New South Wales Tissue Resource Centre at the University of Sydney, Australia, is one of the few human brain banks dedicated to the study of the effects of chronic alcoholism. The bank was affiliated in 1994 as a member of the National Network of Brain Banks and also focuses on schizophrenia and healthy control tissue. Alcohol abuse is a major problem worldwide, manifesting in such conditions as fetal alcohol syndrome, adolescent binge drinking, alcohol dependency, and alcoholic neurodegeneration. The latter is also referred to as alcohol-related brain damage (ARBD). The study of postmorte

Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are reprogrammed cells with a remarkable capacity for unlimited expansion and differentiation into various cell types. Companies worldwide are actively engaged in developing clinical-grade iPSC lines to address the needs of regenerative medicine, immunotherapies, and precision medicine. However, ensuring the safety and quality of iPSCs is essential, with adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and ethical considerations being paramount. Perinatal cell and tissue banks, such as umbilical cord (UC) blood and tissue banks, are emerging as ideal sourc

This paper discusses the legal implications of setting up two new biobanks in Belgium. The first is hospital-based and will archive tissue from patients with haematologic cancer, whereas the second is linked to a general practice based morbidity registry and will involve storage of blood samples. To date, Belgium has no specific legislation that regulates storage of human tissue and related databases. Several issues concerning the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal medical data are discussed from the existing privacy legislation. We will address the principle o

A review of the brain banking literature reveals a primary focus either on the factors that influence the decision to become a future donor or on the brain tissue processing that takes place after the individual has died (i.e., the front-end or back-end processes). What has not been sufficiently detailed, however, is the complex and involved process that takes place after this decision to become a future donor is made yet before post-mortem processing occurs (i.e., the large middle-ground). This generally represents a period of many years during which the brain bank is actively engaged with do

Archival tissues, particularly formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tumors, have become increasingly valuable in studies of the etiology of cancer. In non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, subclassification of tumors by immunophenotyping and identification of oncogenic viruses has allowed more accurate interpretation of associated epidemiological information. One such example is adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma, which is not a single histopathological entity and usually is associated with human T-cell lymphotropic virus, type I. In addition to confirming the diagnosis, the pattern of virus distribution, utilized
