[Tissue response in circum-maxillary sutures after transverse palated suture expansion].

OBJECTIVE: This study was carried out to investigate the histological reactions of midfacial sutures induced by transverse palatal suture expansion. METHODS: Nine mongrel dogs of 8-week old were used in the study. Six of them were used as experimental group as described in a previous paper. The additional three served as controls. In the experimental dogs, a NiTi-shape memory alloy (NiTi-SMA) arch wire was used to expand the transverse palatal suture. Tetracycline was injected intramuscularly (50 mg/kg) three days before operation and at the time of sacrifice. Tissue reactions of premaxillo-m

Is soft tissue expansion in lower limb reconstruction a legitimate option?

From 1986 to 1994, a consecutive series of 34 patients had 37 expanders placed in their legs. Indications for expansion included removal of painful ro unstable scars, chronic post-traumatic ulcers and one benign skin lesion. In 13 patients the lesion or scar was greater than 5 cm in diameter. The area of expansion was mainly in the proximal and distal thirds of the lower limb. On three occasions two expanders were simultaneously used in the same patient. The treatment with this technique was ultimately successful in 23 patients (67.6%) but 15 of the 23 patients (44% of the 34 patients) had min

Experimental effects of intraorbital tissue expansion on orbitomaxillary growth in anophthalmos.

A skeletal growth study evaluating an intraorbital tissue expander as a globe replacement in anophthalmos was conducted in an infant animal model. Twenty-one 21-day-old kittens were equally divided into the following three groups: a control, a unilaterally enucleated, and an enucleated-expanded group. Postoperative three-dimensional computed tomographic scans were obtained at 5 months of age immediately before study termination. Linear orbital, orbitomaxillary, and zygomaticomaxillary dimensions were measured on the scans and compared at necropsy with orbital volume assessment on the dry skull

An Assessment of Quality-of-Life Following Tissue Expansion in Pediatric Patients.

Introduction: There is limited data on the effects of tissue expansion (TE) surgery on quality-of-life (QOL) in pediatric patients. Evidence-based information may help clinicians, patients, and their families with treatment decision-making and post-operative expectations. This study explores QOL following TE in pediatric patients. Methods: A post-intervention QOL survey and retrospective chart review was performed. Patients who underwent TE at a pediatric tertiary hospital between October 2004 and March 2020 completed the Glasgow Children's Benefit Inventory or the Glasgow Benefit Inventory. T

Adipose Tissue Development and Expansion from the Womb to Adolescence: An Overview.

Prevalence rates of pediatric obesity continue to rise worldwide. Adipose tissue (AT) development and expansion initiate in the fetus and extend throughout the lifespan. This paper presents an overview of the AT developmental trajectories from the intrauterine period to adolescence; factors determining adiposity expansion are also discussed. The greatest fetal increases in AT were observed in the third pregnancy trimester, with growing evidence suggesting that maternal health and nutrition, toxin exposure, and genetic defects impact AT development. From birth up to six months, healthy term new

Reconstruction of head and neck hemangiomas with tissue expansion in the pediatric population.

A retrospective study of 245 patients with 299 hemangiomas treated from May 1981 to April 1994 was done. A subset of 175 of these patients (58.5%) had hemangiomas of the head and neck. Six of the 175 (3%) required reconstruction following laser therapy. Tissue expansion was chosen for each of these reconstructions. Five females and 1 male underwent tissue expansion. The age of the patients at the time of tissue expansion ranged from 2.5 to 12 years, with an average of 6 years. Tissue expander sizes were 50 cc and 100 cc. Infection was seen during the course of expansion in 1 patient. Satisfact

Tissue expansion as an alternative to skin grafting for closure of skin deficits.

Recent advances in the technical aspects of tissue expanders for closure of skin deficits have led to an overall reduction in the high rate of complications typically associated with their usage. The authors provide a review of the recent refinements in the technique of the tissue expansion process. A discussion of current and future applications using this technique in the treatment of various lower extremity pathologies, including clubfoot, is presented. A case report on the use of a subcutaneous tissue expander for the treatment of a failed skin graft of the medial ankle is included.

MicroMagnify: A Multiplexed Expansion Microscopy Method for Pathogens and Infected Tissues.

Super-resolution optical imaging tools are crucial in microbiology to understand the complex structures and behavior of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses. However, the capabilities of these tools, particularly when it comes to imaging pathogens and infected tissues, remain limited. MicroMagnify (µMagnify) is developed, a nanoscale multiplexed imaging method for pathogens and infected tissues that are derived from an expansion microscopy technique with a universal biomolecular anchor. The combination of heat denaturation and enzyme cocktails essential is found for robust cell

[Our experience with tissue expansion on a series of 50 cases in Vietnam].

The authors reviewed their experience with tissue expansion from July of 1995 to December of 1999 at Hanoi Plastic Surgery Center. A total of 75 tissue expanders of various sizes were placed in 50 consecutive patients (16 men and 34 women) for the reconstruction of secondary defects (burn scars, skin graft scars, hypertrophic scars, keloids, capillary hemangioma, congenital nevi and micotia). The average age of patients was 21 years. The tissue expansion protocol was used in clinical as well as common principle. The main technical details are modified in this procedure by the authors: type of

Use of a calf prosthesis and tissue expansion in aesthetic reconstruction of the leg.

We present a technique for reconstruction of the legs in patients with soft-tissue loss and formation of large scars with retraction of this tissue in the pretibial region. In such patients, a subcutaneous tissue expander is placed in the region adjacent to the scar tissue. With expansion, we obtained sufficient skin for use in the reconstruction, and the resulting asymmetry in leg diameter was compensated for by means of one or two calf prostheses, depending on the patient.

Intra-abdominal tissue expansion: an adjunct in the separation of conjoined twins.

Intra-abdominal tissue expansion routinely occurs physiologically with pregnancy and may be seen in a variety of pathologic states. There are a number of situations where additional abdominal wall would be helpful. We encountered such a situation in a set of ischiopagus conjoined twins. In effect, separation would result in an abdominal wall deficit of approximately 50%. As an alternative to intraperitoneal air, we inserted two 1,000 mL tissue expanders through a subcostal incision at 6 months of age. Over the ensuing 7 weeks, each expander was gradually inflated to greater than capacity (1,25

Combined tissue expansion and free tissue transfer for reconstruction of the hand in epidermolysis bullosa-associated malignancy.

The recessive form of dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) is associated with severe hand deformities characterized by cocooning pseudopolysyndactyly, recurrent ulceration, fibrosis, and adduction contracture of the thumb. In addition, RDEB is associated with an aggressive form of squamous carcinoma, notable for rapid metastases, appearance at an early age, and a relative resistance to radiation or chemotherapy. To date, reported reconstructive treatment has been limited to excision with skin grafting or amputation. We report the successful combined use of tissue expansion and microsurgical

Development of an Efficient Murine Tissue Expansion Model for Skin Regeneration Research.

Skin regeneration is essential for the healing of various superficial wounds and can be promoted by mechanical stimulation. Tissue expansion is a widely used strategy to accelerate skin regeneration by controlled mechanical stretch; however, its clinical efficacy is often restricted by a mismatch between mechanical loading and the skin's regenerative capacity. To address this limitation, the development of a standardized animal model of tissue expansion is urgently required. In this study, we established a tissue expansion model in Sprague-Dawley rats. Following the dorsal implantation of a 10

Tissue expansion in the pediatric patient: A 23-year single-institution experience.

BACKGROUND: Given the wide and variable use of tissue expansion in pediatric soft tissue reconstruction, we aimed to characterize its use at our institution over the past 23 years, focusing on clinical outcomes stratified by location, indication, and repeat expansion. METHODS: A multi-surgeon retrospective review of all patients who underwent tissue expander (TE) placement from 2001-2024 was conducted. Demographic, operative, and outcomes data were collected and compared. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression were used to identify the predictors of complications and premature expl

Visualizing cellular and tissue ultrastructure using Ten-fold Robust Expansion Microscopy (TREx).

Expansion microscopy (ExM) is a powerful technique to overcome the diffraction limit of light microscopy that can be applied in both tissues and cells. In ExM, samples are embedded in a swellable polymer gel to physically expand the sample and isotropically increase resolution in x, y, and z. The maximum resolution increase is limited by the expansion factor of the gel, which is four-fold for the original ExM protocol. Variations on the original ExM method have been reported that allow for greater expansion factors but at the cost of ease of adoption or versatility. Here, we systematically exp

Human adipose tissue expansion in pregnancy is impaired in gestational diabetes mellitus.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: During pregnancy, adipose tissue (AT) must expand to support the growing fetus and the future nutritional needs of the offspring. Limited expandability of AT is associated with insulin resistance, attributed to ectopic lipid deposition. This study aimed to investigate human AT expandability during pregnancy and its role in the pathogenesis of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). METHODS: This cross-sectional study of omental (OM) and subcutaneous (SQ) AT collected at Caesarean delivery included 11 pregnant and three non-pregnant women with normal glucose tolerance (NGT), five

Human acellular dermis versus no acellular dermis in tissue expansion breast reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Human acellular dermis has been adopted for routine use in tissue expander reconstruction. The purported benefits include higher intraoperative fill volume, facilitation of lower pole expansion, and enhanced definition of the lower pole of the breast. Recently, concerns have arisen about an increase in postoperative complications with its use. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of patients who had immediate postmastectomy breast reconstruction with a tissue expander from July of 2001 to July of 2011. All tissue expander reconstructions before 2005 were performed submusc
