Interventions to reduce harm from continued tobacco use.

BACKGROUND: Although smoking cessation is currently the only guaranteed way to reduce the harm caused by tobacco smoking, a reasonable secondary tobacco control approach may be to try and reduce the harm from continued tobacco use amongst smokers unable or unwilling to quit. Possible approaches to reduce the exposure to toxins from smoking include reducing the amount of tobacco used, and using less toxic products, such as pharmaceutical, nicotine and potential reduced-exposure tobacco products (PREPs), as an alternative to cigarettes. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of interventions intende

Psychiatric correlates of snuff and chewing tobacco use.

Compared to the association between cigarette smoking and psychiatric disorders, relatively little is known about the relationship between smokeless tobacco use and psychiatric disorders. To identify the psychiatric correlates of smokeless tobacco use, the analysis used a national representative sample from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC) wave 1. Smokeless tobacco use was classified as exclusive snuff use, exclusive chewing tobacco, and dual use of both snuff and chewing tobacco at some time in the smokeless tobacco user's life. Lifetime psychiatric

Maternal smokeless tobacco use and adverse pregnancy outcome.

This study was conducted to determine the association between prolonged smokeless tobacco (ST) use for more than 5 years by mothers and pregnancy outcome. It was a retrospective cohort study done on department of paediatrics and department of gynecology & obstetrics, Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Dhaka from January 2009 to December 2010. A total of 340 mother-neonate pairs were included in the study. A total of 170 mothers using smokeless tobacco for more than 5 years and their recently delivered newborn infants (mother-neonate pair) were enrolled as cases and 170 mother-neonate pairs withou

Maternal tobacco use and shorter newborn nursery stays.

OBJECTIVE: Nationally, 10%-15% of women report smoking during the last 3 months of pregnancy. Because the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (now the Joint Commission) requires all U.S. hospitals to be smoke-free, and because tobacco is addictive, the maternal desire to smoke after childbirth could lead to requests for early hospital discharge for mothers and newborns. The authors hypothesized that maternal tobacco use would be associated with shorter newborn nursery hospital stays. METHODS: Birth records from 405,622 singleton, "well" newborns, >or=35 weeks gestati

Functional brain imaging of tobacco use and dependence.

While most cigarette smokers endorse a desire to quit smoking, only about 14% to 49% will achieve abstinence after 6 months or more of treatment. A greater understanding of the effects of smoking on brain function may (in conjunction with other lines of research) result in improved pharmacological (and behavioral) interventions. Many research groups have examined the effects of acute and chronic nicotine/cigarette exposure on brain activity using functional imaging; the purpose of this paper is to synthesize findings from such studies and present a coherent model of brain function in smokers.

Genetics of alcohol and tobacco use in humans.

The field of genetics holds great promise for furthering our understanding of the etiology of drug dependence and for identifying novel targets for treatment. Genetic studies utilizing twins and families have demonstrated a considerable role for genetics in nicotine and/or alcohol dependence. Risk for alcoholism or nicotine dependence is likely to be the result of a large number of genes, each contributing a small fraction of the overall risk. While this review will focus on studies in humans, many of the candidate genes for human nicotine and alcohol dependence listed here were originally pos

Smokeless tobacco use by youth: a health concern.

Smokeless tobacco use in the United States has increased over the last two decades largely due to increased consumption by young people. Rates of use are highest among teenage and young adult males, and the most popular form of smokeless tobacco is moist snuff. Peer pressure as well as use of other addictive substances such as cigarettes, drugs, and alcohol, seem to correlate with current use. Frequent users of smokeless tobacco have an increased risk of developing gingival recession, leukoplakia, and oral cancer at the placement site. Other health concerns are related to the cardiovascular ef

Tobacco use by narcoleptics and daytime sleep tendency.

The nocturnal sleep and daytime sleep tendency were assessed in 10 narcoleptics who regularly smoked cigarettes and 10 narcoleptics who did not use tobacco. Standard sleep-wake polygraphic measures were recorded during the 24-h study. There were no statistical differences between groups in terms of nighttime sleep structure, although tobacco use resulted in a decreased sleep duration. Smokers tended to fall asleep more rapidly than non-smokers throughout daytime multiple sleep latency testing. The data failed to demonstrate a daytime arousal effect of tobacco for patients with narcolepsy.

Association between tobacco use, including heated tobacco products, and problem gambling: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Although smoking is a known risk factor for problem gambling, the relationship between heated tobacco products (HTPs), emerging tobacco products that are widely used in Japan, and problem gambling has not yet been examined. This study investigated the association between smoking behaviour, including HTP use, and problem gambling. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study using data from a large-scale online survey conducted from January 24 to February 27, 2024. Respondents who reported gambling within the past year were included in this study. Exclusive cigarette use, exclusiv

Effectiveness of tobacco cessation interventions and risk factors for tobacco-use relapse: A cohort study.

Background Tobacco cessation interventions are a cost-effective way of reducing ill health due to tobacco, as quitting unaided is difficult. There is limited data from India on the success of these strategies. We assessed effectiveness of tobacco cessation strategies in our tobacco cessation clinic (TCC) and the risk factors for smoking relapse. Methods We did an observational study between April 2017 and January 2020 in a tertiary care teaching hospital in Bengaluru, India. All adults who visited the Department of Pulmonary Medicine or TCC were enrolled in the study. A pilot-tested, semi-stru

Heated Tobacco Products: Awareness, Beliefs, Use and Susceptibility among US Adult Current Tobacco Users, 2021.

Limited data exist on the awareness, beliefs, and use of heated tobacco products (HTPs). Data from 1583 U.S. adult (age ≥ 21 years) current tobacco users were collected in 2021. Participants self-reported HTP awareness, beliefs, use, and susceptibility, as well as current tobacco product use and sociodemographics. We used weighted logistic and multinomial regression models to explore their associations. Overall, 23.6% were aware of, 8.9% had ever used, and 3.0% currently used HTPs. Younger individuals (vs. 61+ years), those with annual income $50,000+ (vs. <$50,000), and those currently using

Tobacco Product Use Among U.S. Middle and High School Students - National Youth Tobacco Survey, 2023.

Tobacco product use during adolescence increases the risk for lifelong nicotine addiction and adverse health consequences. CDC and the Food and Drug Administration analyzed data from the 2023 National Youth Tobacco Survey to assess tobacco product use patterns among U.S. middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12) students. In 2023, 10.0% of middle and high school students (2.80 million) reported current (i.e., past 30-day) use of any tobacco product. Current use of any tobacco product by high school students declined by an estimated 540,000, from 2.51 million in 2022 to 1.97 mill

Institutional Tobacco Policy and Tobacco Use Among Kansas Sheriffs' Staff and Individuals Incarcerated in Jail.

This article describes the factors that contribute to Kansas county jails' tobacco culture to identify reasons for high tobacco use and intervention opportunities. Kansas sheriffs' offices were asked to complete a novel 26-item survey from August through November 2019, and 40% responded. A few reported that tobacco cessation counseling was available to staff (31%) or incarcerated individuals (12%). Seventy-nine percent reported that staff were permitted to use tobacco in designated places outside, whereas 24% reported that tobacco use by incarcerated individuals was permitted in designated pla

Prevalence and denial of current tobacco product use: Combustible and heated tobacco products, Japan, 2022.

Monitoring tobacco use has become more complex with the proliferation of novel tobacco products, including heated tobacco products (HTPs). We assessed the latest prevalence and denial of tobacco product use in Japan, a major market for HTPs. 28,124 individuals aged 16-74 responded to a nationwide, internet-based, self-reported survey. Current (past-30-day) tobacco use was assessed for HTPs, cigarettes, non-cigarette combustible tobacco, and dual (combustible plus HTP) use. Denial of current tobacco use was determined when respondents reported past-30-day use of a specific tobacco product ("On

Sexual Orientation, Tobacco Use, and Tobacco Cessation Treatment-Seeking: Results From a National U.S. Survey.

Despite higher rates of tobacco use and smoking-related diseases among sexual minorities, tobacco cessation treatment-seeking behaviors (e.g., medication, nicotine replacement products) remain poorly understood across sexual orientation subgroups. This study examines tobacco cessation treatment-seeking behaviors associated with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition tobacco use disorder (TUD) across the three major sexual orientation dimensions (identity, attraction, behavior) in U.S. adults. Prevalence estimates reflect data collected from a 2012-2013 national samp

Reasons for Tobacco Use and Perceived Tobacco-Related Health Risks in an Inpatient Psychiatric Population.

People with mental illness (MI) have a disproportionate tobacco-related disease burden and mortality. Tobacco-use rates in people with MI are nearly twice that of the general population. Reasons for tobacco-use in this population may be a result of diminished tobacco-related disease risk perceptions. The purpose of this study was to examine the reasons for tobacco-use and perceived tobacco-related health risks among psychiatric inpatients. A correlational design was employed to survey a convenient sample of 137 patients from a psychiatric facility in central Kentucky. Information obtained from

Tobacco advertising, cross-over effects, and US adolescent progression from never to current tobacco use.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Adolescent receptivity to tobacco advertising has been linked to increased tobacco initiation in longitudinal studies. However, not all ever users progress to daily use. We examined whether receptivity to tobacco advertising among adolescents was associated with product-specific use, including daily use, as an adult, and whether receptivity to one product had a cross-over effect and predicted use of a different product at follow-up. METHODS: In the US Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study, 74.6% of adolescent never-tobacco-users at baseline (2013-

Disparities in Receipt of Tobacco Cessation Advice Among U.S. Adult Healthcare Patients Who Use Tobacco.

INTRODUCTION: Healthcare systems could reduce disparities in the toll of tobacco use by advising all patients who use tobacco to quit. This study examined U.S. adult population-based estimates of past-year tobacco use and of healthcare provider advice to quit tobacco and disparities in these rates across sociodemographic and substance use characteristics. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from the 2015-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health were used to estimate the rates of tobacco use and tobacco cessation advice as a function of patient sociodemographic characteristics and other substance
