The term symbrachydactyly describes syndactyly accompanied by brachydactyly. Brachydactyly is seen in middle phalanges of both hands and feet and very short in length or absent. As for syndactyly it is a cutaneous type. It has always been observed unilaterally and sporadically. A familial type of this syndrome has also been reported. There have been many classifications of symbrachydactyly. Of these, Blauth classification is the most favored one. Yet these classifications have been inadequate to include many recently discovered other forms of symbrachydactyly. A three month old child was broug

Pfeiffer's syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by craniofacial abnormalities and distal extremity abnormalities. This case study reviews four generations of a family with craniofacial abnormalities, multiple simple syndactylies, and delta phalanges of bilateral great toes and thumbs inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion.

Microgeodic disease is a disease of unknown etiology that affects the fingers and toes of children, with ≥ 90% of cases involving the fingers alone. We present a rare case of microgeodic disease affecting an index finger and two toes simultaneously in a 7-year-old girl. X-ray and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed multiple small areas of osteolysis in the middle phalanges of the left index finger, hallux, and second toe. Microgeodic disease was diagnosed from X-ray and MRI findings, and conservative therapy involving rest and avoidance of cold stimuli was provided. Although pathological f

The modern techniques of treatment of the hallux valgus are founded on the biomechanic and permit to give again a good function of the big toe. The authors prefer the osseous methods and specially the phalangeal and metatarsal osteotomies. It is necessary also to do a lateral release of the metatarsophalangeal joint and an exostosectomy. The late results are good.

A case of Apert's syndrome in a one year old female child is described and literature reviewed. She was the first born of a young couple. She had congenital syndactyl of toes and fingers, acro-cephalic skull, flat facies, exophthalmos, hypertelorism and greasy skin. In addition to the typical radiological features of this syndrome which the patient showed, thickened first metacarpals forked at the base were also seen. There were two phalanges for each toe. Calcification was seen intracranially. These radiological features have not been mentioned so far in the literature reviewed.

We describe a family with four relatives showing broad terminal phalanges (BTP) of the fingers and toes. One also had mental retardation, an unusual facial appearance, cleft palate with bifid uvula, and gingival hyperplasia. The BTP anomaly in this family seems to be transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait.

Accipitridae (eagles, hawks, and kites) are raptorial birds whose anisodactyl feet combine support, perching, and prey capture. In several Accipitridae, the proximal and intermediate phalanges of the inner toe (digit II; phalanges II-1 and II-2) are fused completely or partly into a single functional unit. The character occurs in a restricted but ecologically heterogeneous set of kites and sea eagles and is absent from many other raptorial taxa. Its distribution is therefore not explained adequately by body size, broad diet or predation in itself. This synthesis interprets the fused condition

Cheilectomy has long been the standard treatment in the orthopedic community for mild to moderate cases of hallux rigidus, with established long-term excellent results. Osteotomies of the proximal phalanx and first metatarsal have been described mainly in the podiatric literature; they have shown good outcomes in small patient groups with short-term follow-up. Proper patient selection is critical to obtaining favorable outcomes with any of the joint-sparing procedures. Patients with severe arthritic changes and pain in the midrange arc of motion have poorer outcomes with these procedures and a

Pain at the second or third metatarsophalangeal joint associated with objective instability and roentgenographic displacement is a common forefoot problem. In 53 patients (60 feet), surgical correction of the painful deformity was completed by resecting the bases of the proximal phalanges of Toes 2 and 3 combined with subtotal webbing of the toes. At an average follow-up period of 29.8 months, 38% were wholly satisfied; 37%, satisfied with minor reservations; 15%, satisfied with major reservations; and 10% were not satisfied. When graded for pain, cosmesis, and footwear use, the most improveme

Congenital coalition of the middle and distal phalanges in the fifth toe are common. They have been reported to occur in up to 50% of American and European populations and in up to 73% of people of Japanese descent. Congenital interphalangeal coalition of the other toes is less common. We report two cases of fracture through an interphalangeal coalition following blunt trauma. Diagnosis was delayed in these fractures. One fracture healed only after prolonged immobilization and the other developed a delayed union. Patients with this fracture should be advised of the prolonged convalescence sinc

Seventeen patients with symbrachydactyly of the foot are described. Patient characteristics including sex, the side of the affected foot, age at first medical examination, and condition of the nails were recorded. Compared with the unaffected side, the lengths of the proximal phalangeal and metatarsal bones were significantly shorter. The abnormalities of the feet were classified into four types: typical axial, atypical axial, medial ray, and rudimentary. The anomaly progresses from hypoplasia of the central rays to a deformity of the great toe, but rarely involves the fifth toe. The fact that

The radiographic abnormalities of the interphalangeal joint of the great toe in 50 patients with rheumatoid arthritis were compared with those in 14 patients with psoriatic arthritis. Alterations were seen in 50% of the rheumatoid joints. Characteristic superficial erosions along the medial aspect of the proximal and distal phalanges, with little change in the joint space, differed from more widespread and extensive destruction of this joint in psoriasis. In addition, periosteal proliferation, bony ankylosis and tuft resorption, frequently noted in psoriatic arthritis, were unusual in rheumato

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this work was to study the normal musculotendinous structures of the ostrich foot.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten African apparent healthy adult female ostriches (Struthio camelus) were slaughtered, and the pelvic limbs were separated from the ankle joint. The different biomedical scanning techniques including radiography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasonography were achieved. Then, the ostrich feet were freshly dissected.
RESULTS: The radiographs and CT images showed the bony components of the ostrich foot that revealed the presence

Non-syndromic syndactylies have been classified into five major types (I-V), all showing autosomal dominant mode of inheritance. Later, the classification was extended and three additional variants (VI-VIII) were defined. Type VII, the Cenani-Lenz syndactyly, is the only non-syndromic, autosomal recessive type. It is characterized by fusion of all phalanges with metacarpal synostosis, dislocated and dysplastic carpals and infrequently, radio-ulnar fusion. Here, we present a Pakistani family with a novel non-syndromic autosomal recessive syndactyly manifesting a unique combination of clinical f

We report two fetuses with Fryns syndrome including the typical facial appearance and distal limb and lung hypoplasia, but no diaphragmatic hernias. The parents were consanguineous. Characteristic in both cases were the distal limb defects with brachytelephalangism and aplasia of the distal phalanges of the first toe. Since one of the two sibs had severe lung hypoplasia without macroscopic or microscopic defects of the diaphragm, we show that lung hypoplasia can occur independently from diaphragmatic defects in Fryns syndrome.

CASE: A 14-year-old girl presented with painful high-arched feet and unusual, asymptomatic, bilateral macrodactyly of the halluces. After a year of observation, a surgical reduction was performed because of the psychological effect that the abnormality had on the patient. Bilateral shortening osteotomies of the metatarsal and the proximal phalangeal bones were performed. At 2 months after surgery, complete bone healing and alignment had been achieved. At the 5-year follow-up, we noted fully functional big toes, plantigrade feet, bilateral proper toe formula, and extreme patient satisfaction wi

Janus green was injected into the amniotic sac of 6-5-day-old chick embryos at a single dose of 8-5 or 15 mug; the dye causes respectively 55 and 82% malformations of the feet. Toe are affected by partial or total soft tissue syndactyly, hypophalangy and infrequently by hyperphalangy. Lateral toes are more severely and more frequently affected by syndactyly and hypophalangy than medium ones. Hyperphalangy is found exclusively in toes I and II and causes the formation of one excess phalanx at most. Syndactylous toes are joined by an overdeveloped digital membrane. Hypophalangic toes have a trun

Symphalangism is the partial or complete bony fusion of phalanges in the fingers and toes due to an autosomal dominant gene, with inherited failure of development of one or more interphalangeal joints. Two patients--a newborn baby and his mother--both revealing this rare malformation, are presented in this paper and the clinical and radiological features are described and discussed.

We report on a girl with absent nails, short/absent distal phalanges of the second to fifth fingers and toes, short thumbs, absent halluces, and carpo-tarsal coalition who also had genitourinary malformations. Trio-based whole exome sequencing identified a novel de novo mutation (c.1102A>T, p.Ile368Phe) in the HOXA13 gene. Heterozygous HOXA13 mutations have been previously reported in hand-foot-genital syndrome and Guttmacher syndrome, which are variably associated with small nails, short distal and middle phalanges, short thumbs and halluces, but not absent nails.
