Analysis of the Justification for Spinal Computed Tomography (CT) Scans Performed in Togo.

INTRODUCTION: The undeniable benefits of irradiating examinations such as computed tomography (CT) scans should not overshadow their potential harmful effects, particularly late risks. METHODS: This was a prospective descriptive study of spinal CT scans performed between 1st June and 31st August 2021 and interpreted by a radiologist in seven functional CT units in Togo. The analysis of the just

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of syphilis among female sex workers (FSWs) and their clients in Togo. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study in December 2011 targeting FSWs and th

A cross-sectional study was carried out on 570 children of four primary schools at Agbande-Yaka, between March and July 2010. Hemoglobin characterization was done by alkaline buffer electrophoresis and the blood types ABO-Rhesus (Rh) D by immuno-hematological methods. A Hb variant was detected in 37.0% of the schoolchildren. Among them, the AS trait accounted for 11.9% and the AC trait for 20.2%. Homozygous Hb S (HB

[The prevalence of schistosomiasis in Togo. A cross-sectional study conducted in a school setting].

As a prelude to a national campaign to control schistosomiasis in Togo, mass screening of school children in 22 prefectures was undertaken to determine the extent of endemic schistosomiasis. Children were randomly selected for testing. In each case, stool examinations using by the Kato-Katz method and urine tests (centrifugation of 10 ml) were performed to detect Schistosome eggs. A total of 2511 children were tested. The sex ratio was 1.7 and mean age 10.4 years (range: 5 to 20 years). The incidence of schistosomiasis was 26.7 p. 100. Schistosoma haematobium was the most widespread and active

Geographic distribution and epidemiology of Oesophagostomum bifurcum and hookworm infections in humans in Togo.

In contrast to the rest of the world, infections with Oesophagostomum bifurcum are commonly found in humans in northern Togo and Ghana. In addition, infections with hookworm are endemic in this region. In the present study, a detailed map of the geographic distribution of O. bifurcum and hookworm infections in northern Togo was made. There were a number of foci with high prevalence of infection with O. bifurcum. All the villages examined were infected with hookworm, and the distribution was quite patchy. Women were infected with O. bifurcum more often than men, while infections with hookworm w

Preliminary studies on the histochemical differentiation of strains of Onchocerca volvulus microfilariae in Togo.

Skin snips were taken from 75 people living in four villages of northern Togo. The 7824 microfilariae that emerged were examined by staining for the presence of acid phosphatase. Four distinct patterns of enzyme staining were observed, and descriptions of the stained microfilariae are given. The study confirms the view that a number of biological strains or variants of Onchocerca volvulus coexist in West Africa, and suggestions are made for further research that could result in the practical application of these observations in onchocerciasis control programmes.

Neuromyelitis optica in Sub-Saharan Africa: the first case report from Togo.

Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) appears to affect blacks disproportionately in mixed populations. We report the first case of documented NMO in Togo (West Africa). A 26-year-old Togolese woman was admitted for progressive tetraplegia, acute urine retention, and dyspnea. Magnetic resonance imaging of the cervical spinal cord demonstrated an extensive longitudinal lesion, and an ophthalmologic examination found bilateral optic neuritis. Antibody testing for AQP4-IgG was positive. The patient died of severe respiratory distress despite high doses of intravenous corticosteroids. Epidemiological data ab
