The long-term fate of persisting deciduous molars and canines in 42 patients with severe hypodontia: a 12-year follow-up.

OBJECTIVES: The decision to preserve or to extract a deciduous tooth without a successor hinges upon whether it can be expected to be stable over time. This study aimed to record the number and location of deciduous teeth and to examine the condition of deciduous canines and molars in a group of patients with severe hypodontia, both at baseline and at follow-up. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 50 patients participated in a follow-up study. The average age was 13.9 years (range 7-25 years) at baseline and 25.6 years (range 18-38 years) at follow-up. Of the 50 subjects, 44 had at least one per

Management of Impacted Premolar With Root Dilaceration Caused by Radicular Cyst in Deciduous Molar: A Case Report.

Radicular cyst is the most common inflammatory odontogenic cyst in the oral cavity, but it rarely occurs in deciduous teeth. Radicular cysts in deciduous teeth can lead to root dilaceration in permanent successor teeth, resulting in impacted permanent teeth. We presented an 11-year-old boy who underwent decompression and drainage of a radicular cyst in deciduous tooth, followed by early orthodontic traction of permanent successor tooth with root dilaceration. The cyst healed successfully, and the impacted premolar was gradually aligned into the dental arch with favorable root development This

A histological study of the exfoliation of human deciduous teeth.

For clarification of the histological details of the shedding of human deciduous teeth, exfoliated and extracted deciduous teeth were examined by light and electron microscopy. After the roots were completely resorbed, the dentogingival junction migrated along the inner resorbing surface and finally reached the pulpal surface of the crown. At the same time, the gingival epithelium also proliferated and migrated under the crown of the deciduous tooth in such a way that part of it lined the residue of the pulp and another part lined the surface overlying the erupting successional tooth. This phe

Cellular events at the onset of physiological root resorption in rabbit deciduous teeth.

For elucidation of how physiological root resorption of deciduous teeth is initiated, the cellular events that occur surrounding the root of rabbit deciduous teeth before and at the onset of physiological root resorption were observed by means of light and electron microscopy. In addition, the cytodifferentiation of odontoclasts during the initial phase of this root resorption was evaluated by histochemical staining of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) activity as a marker odontoclasts and their precursors. The present investigation was focused on the physiological root resorption of

Tooth wear in the mixed dentition: a comparative study between children born in the 1950s and the 1990s.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the degree of tooth wear in posterior deciduous teeth of 100 subjects in the second phase of mixed dentition who were born in the 1950s (50sG) and 100 subjects born in the 1990s (90sG). The degree of abrasion for each posterior deciduous tooth was scored ranging from 0 to 3. The comparison of the degree of abrasion showed significant differences between the two groups for all examined teeth (upper and lower deciduous canines and first and second primary molars) all of which appeared to be more abraded in the 50sG. The findings of the present study indicate

Nutritional status, tooth eruption, and dental caries: a review.

Animal studies have shown that early malnutrition affects tooth structure, delays tooth eruption, and results in increased dental caries. However, epidemiologic evidence in support of these findings has been elusive. Cross-sectional surveys show that populations with a higher prevalence of caries in their deciduous teeth also show a lower prevalence of caries in their permanent teeth. However, longitudinal data from individuals show exactly the opposite. Caries development is also delayed as a consequence of a delayed tooth eruption and thus the bell-shaped curve that results from plotting dec

Synchrotron X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy to understand enamel affected by metabolic disorder mucopolysaccharidosis.

Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) is an inherited metabolic disorder that can affect the tooth structure leading to defects. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction being a state of the art technique has been used to determine the enamel crystallite orientation in deciduous enamel affected by Mucopolysaccharidosis Type I and Mucopolysaccharidosis Type IVA and comparing these with that of healthy deciduous enamel. Using this technique it was observed that there is a loss of texture in deciduous enamel affected by Mucopolysaccharidosis Type I and Mucopolysaccharidosis Type IVA when compared to the healthy decid

Associations between school-based fluoride mouth-rinse program, medical-dental expense subsidy policy, and children's oral health in Japan: an ecological study.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries are a common non-communicable disease among children. As a public health measure at the prefectural level, school-based fluoride mouth-rinse (S-FMR) program, medical/dental expense subsidy policies, and other factors may reduce the incidence of dental caries and tooth loss. Prefectures focusing on promoting oral health policies may promote both, but the interaction effect of implementing both subsidy policies and S-FMR at the prefectural level on caries prevention has not yet been examined. METHODS: We conducted an ecological study using two-wave panel data, prefectu

Triplication in permanent teeth: A rare case report.

Fusion is an anomaly manifested in both deciduous and permanent dentitions. Triple tooth refers to the union of three separate tooth entities. It can involve the normal dentition or supernumerary teeth. Triplication is rarely encountered in deciduous and permanent dentition with an incidence of 0.02%. The case presented herein describes a rare case of triplication in permanent maxillary incisors and supernumerary teeth in a 15-year-old female.

Biomechanical stress regulates mammalian tooth replacement via the integrin β1-RUNX2-Wnt pathway.

Renewal of integumentary organs occurs cyclically throughout an organism's lifetime, but the mechanism that initiates each cycle remains largely unknown. In a miniature pig model of tooth development that resembles tooth development in humans, the permanent tooth did not begin transitioning from the resting to the initiation stage until the deciduous tooth began to erupt. This eruption released the accumulated mechanical stress inside the mandible. Mechanical stress prevented permanent tooth development by regulating expression and activity of the integrin β1-ERK1-RUNX2 axis in the surrounding

Total impaction of deciduous maxillary molars: two case reports.

AIM: The purpose of this report is to present two cases of totally impacted maxillary deciduous molars, considered a rarity in dental practice. BACKGROUND: Primary tooth impaction is quite rare during the development of primary dentition. Various factors contribute to the impaction of a deciduous tooth, including anklyosis, congenitally missing permanent teeth, defects in the periodontal membrane, trauma, injury of the periodontal ligament, precocious eruption of the first permanent molar, defective eruptive force, or a combination of these factors. REPORTS: Case #1: An 18-year-old male pres

Deciduous canine and permanent lateral incisor differential root resorption.

When a permanent maxillary canine erupts apical to the permanent lateral incisor and the deciduous canine, resorption typically takes place only on the deciduous canine root. An understanding of this differential resorption could provide insight into the reasons for excessive iatrogenic root resorption during orthodontic tooth movement. The purpose of the present study was to examine the response of roots of permanent lateral incisors and deciduous canines to simulated resorption, and to acid and enzyme attack, reflecting the physiologic environment of an erupting permanent canine. Groups of m
