Impact of NSAID etoricoxib on side effects of orthodontic tooth movement.

OBJECTIVES: The non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug etoricoxib is the most highly selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-2 available (344:1) and has been approved for postoperative pain therapy following dental interventions in Europe. At clinically relevant doses it has been reported to only have marginal effects on the velocity of orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). Its effects on associated dental root resorptions, osteoclastogenesis, trabecular number in the alveolar bone and periodontal bone loss during OTM, however, have not yet been investigated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 40 male Fischer344

Impaction of Mandibular First Molar by Tooth-Like Hard Tissue.

Impaction of permanent teeth during the mixed dentition stage is relatively common in clinical practice, but impaction of mandibular first molars is rare. This case report presents an impaction of the mandibular first molar due to a tooth-like hard tissue lesion. An 8-year-old girl was diagnosed with an impacted mandibular first molar. The roots of the impacted molars were almost completely developed. A spherical tooth-like hard tissue with a diameter of approximately 2 mm was observed at the alveolar crest between the impacted mandibular first and second molars. The lesion causing the impacti

AI and 3D printing-assisted surgical exposure of impacted canines and tooth extraction in complex cleft lip and palate orthodontic treatment.

Impacted maxillary canines are common in patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP) due to altered anatomy and scar tissue formation, making surgical exposure challenging. This case report describes the use of artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted CBCT segmentation combined with three-dimensional (3D) printing for surgical planning and orthodontic traction of a palatal impacted canine in a unilateral CLP patient. AI-based segmentation enabled precise localization of the impacted tooth and adjacent structures, and a patient-specific 3D printed model was fabricated to guide surgical access and tra

Full life cycle changes of low impacted mandibular third molar associated cystic lesions and adjacent tooth root resorption: a retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: Low impacted third molars are usually asymptomatic and are often found by X-ray examination. The removal of asymptomatic low impacted third molars is one of the most controversial clinical issues in oral and maxillofacial surgery. METHODS: In this study, 806 patients with low impacted mandibular third molars (LIMTMs) (full bony impaction) were analyzed to determine the prevalence and risk factors for cystic lesions and adjacent tooth root resorption throughout the patients' entire life cycle. RESULTS: The results showed that the prevalence of adjacent tooth root resorption and cys

Case Report: An association of the gubernacular canal, supernumerary tooth and odontoma with an impacted canine on cone-beam computed tomography.

This report describes a clinical case of asymptomatic compound odontoma in the anterior left side of the maxilla associated with an impacted canine and supernumerary tooth with a gubernacular canal of a 47- year-old female with no relevant medical history. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was performed for precise three-dimensional localization of each structure and assessment of their spatial relationship with the associated structures before surgery. The treatment protocol involved surgical enucleation of the odontoma and open extraction of both impacted and supernumerary teeth. The pati

Developmental Odontogenic Lesions Associated with the Crown of an Impacted Tooth: A Guide to the Distinct Histologic Features Required for Classification.

Odontogenic cysts are categorized as inflammatory and developmental. Of the developmental odontogenic cysts, the dentigerous cyst is the most common and by definition is attached to the cervical region of an unerupted tooth. The cyst envelops the crown forming a sac. However, there are other developmental cysts, and rarely, odontogenic tumors, that can have a similar clinical and radiographic presentation as dentigerous cyst, including odontogenic keratocyst, orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst and ameloblastoma, unicystic type. Understanding the key histologic differences of these cysts will ai

The regulatory role of the RANKL/RANK/OPG signaling pathway in the mechanisms of tooth eruption in patients with impacted teeth.

BACKGROUND: Tooth impaction is a common problem in orthodontic practice and in some cases accompanied by pain and pathological changes of surrounding teeth. Understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying tooth impaction allows finding the most effective orthodontic treatment for patients with impacted teeth (IT). RANK (receptor activator of NF-κB) / RANKL (RANK ligand) / OPG (osteoprotegerin) signaling pathway controls bone resorption and may be involved in the regulation of tooth eruption. The study aimed to evaluate bone remodeling based on the assessment of the RANKL/RANK/OP

[Treatment of root fracture of immature maxillary permanent central incisor combined with impacted supernumerary tooth in the apical region: a case report].

Dental trauma is a common oral condition in children. For single-type trauma to young permanent teeth, timely treatment often results in a high survival rate for both the teeth and the pulp. However, in cases of complex dental trauma or when supernumerary teeth are impacted near the apex of the injured tooth, the prognosis is less predictable. This article reports a case of root fracture in an immature maxillary permanent central incisor combined with impacted supernumerary tooth in the apical region. After supernumerary tooth extraction and pulp revascularization therapy, the case demonstrate

Extraction and implant restoration of an inverted impacted anterior tooth with severe crown-root dilaceration: a 4-year follow-up case report.

BACKGROUND: Inverted impaction of anterior teeth with crown-root dilaceration is a rare and clinically challenging developmental anomaly. When orthodontic traction or autotransplantation fails to achieve satisfactory outcomes, extraction followed by implant restoration becomes the preferred treatment option. This approach, however, involves multiple challenges, including the extraction of the inverted impacted tooth, bone defect repair, and aesthetic reconstruction of the anterior dentition. CASE PRESENTATION: This single-case report details the treatment process of a 17-year-old patient with

[Tooth movement of an impacted lower 2nd premolar in the root developmental stage--a follow-up radiographic observation on the root formation].

A 9 year old girl presented an impacted lower right 2nd premolar which not only was in horizontal position, but its crown was directed lingually. As a lower right 2nd premolar was in such a position that normal eruption was impossible, the deciduous predecessor was extracted at 9 years of age, and then sufficient space had been created for the lower right 2nd premolar to be erupted, and the eruption of it was observed for about 2 years. 2 years later, radiographic indication showed that no spontaneous eruption of a lower right 2nd premolar was to be expected. At 11 years of age, surgical expos

Foot orthosis design for children with Charcot-Marie-Tooth and impact on gait.

BACKGROUND: Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) is a progressive disease resulting in distal sensory deficit and muscular weakness. As the disease progresses, most children develop a cavovarus foot deformity. Foot orthoses (FO) are widely prescribed in CMT to support the foot and improve gait, but there is a lack of guidelines for their conception. The aim of this pilot study was to report the methodology used for the design of FO (FOmax) based on an evaluation of foot deformities and to assess its effects on gait in children with CMT. METHODS: This study included 11 children with CMT. Participants wer
