Removal of the proliferating base of the rat incisor did not influence the rate of eruption which responded to changes in impediment to eruption in a fashion similar to that for control teeth. It is the peridontal ligament rather than the proliferating cells that is responsible for tooth eruption. The elements of the peridontal ligament apparently responsible for tooth movement are the mature fibroblasts.

BACKGROUND: Abrasive agents in toothpaste play a crucial role in plaque removal and stain reduction; however, excessive abrasivity may compromise enamel integrity. Zirconium oxide has recently been proposed as a polishing additive, but its optimal concentration remains unclear. This in vitro study aimed to identify the optimal concentration of zirconium oxide particles in toothpaste for effective cleaning through abrasion of natural dental tissues. The study evaluated enamel substance loss (wear) and surface alteration (roughness) across different zirconium oxide concentrations, highlighting b

The literature recognizes two etiologies for periodontal attachment loss. On a statistical basis, bacterial periodontal disease causes attachment loss interproximally, while trauma, or self-inflicted periodontal disease, causes attachment loss on the buccal and lingual tooth surfaces. One study shows that the prevalence of attachment loss caused by abrasion is only slightly less than the attachment loss caused by bacterial periodontal disease. While the clinical community focuses on the prevention and treatment of bacterial disease, a large percentage of periodontal attachment loss (caused by

AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence, patterns, and severity of iatrogenic damage to adjacent teeth during fixed prosthodontic tooth preparation.
METHODOLOGY: A total of 126 teeth were assessed following fixed prosthodontic preparation procedures. The adjacent tooth surfaces were examined clinically to determine the level (degree), location, and type of damage on both mesial and distal surfaces. Damage severity was graded as normal, mild, or severe; locations were recorded according to the specific third of the surface involved, and damage type was categorized as abrasion, nick, o

OBJECTIVES: This case report describes a combination treatment composed of tooth whitening, microabrasion, resin infiltration, and resin-based composite restoration to manage multifactorial stained enamel lesions on anterior teeth.
CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS: The patient's primary concern was to improve the esthetics of their smile after about a decade of extensive orthodontic and orthognathic procedures. After clinical evaluation and history taking, the authors determined that the enamel defects were the result of carious and developmental factors. In-office tooth whitening took place in one vi

Skulls from 277 California bobcats (Lynx rufus californicus) were examined macroscopically and by radiography. The majority of the skulls were from adult animals (79.8%). The skulls were from 128 male (46.2%) and 114 female (41.2%) animals and gender was unknown for the remainder. The majority (95.6%) of teeth were present for examination. Only 16 teeth were identified as absent congenitally and 15 of these were incisor teeth. Teeth with abnormal morphology were rare (0.5%). The two most common abnormalities were unusually large crowns of the maxillary first molar teeth and bigemination of the

Four cases-of congenital dysfunction of the major salivary glands as well as of Prader-Willi, congenital rubella, and Sjögren's syndromes-were identified in a series of 500 patients referred for excessive tooth wear. Although there was evidence of consumption of highly acidic drinks, some occlusal parafunction, and unacceptable toothbrushing habits, salivary dysfunction was the salient factor predisposing a patient to tooth wear in these syndromal cases. The 500 subjects have been characterized either as having medical conditions and medications that predispose them to xerostomia or lifestyles

As part of a collaborative multidisciplinary investigation of root surface caries (RSC), 273 subjects (median age = 57) were clinically evaluated for coronal caries, debris, calculus, gingivitis, periodontal pocketing, recession, abrasion, as well as RSC. The entire study group was divided into three subgroups: (1) subjects whose exposed root surface were without lesions or restorations (non-diseased individuals, n = 43); (2) subjects whose exposed root surfaces had one or more lesions and may or may not have had restorations (diseased individuals, n = 110); (3) subjects with one or more resto

Cement-enamel junction to alveolar crest (CEJ-AC) distances were measured in Romano-British skulls. Measurements were also made of attrition patterns. The patterns of the two measurements were similar in each group, suggesting that teeth continued to erupt and CEJ-AC alone is misleading as a measurement of bone loss and may not relate to the extent of chronic inflammatory periodontal disease. Estimated bone loss was minimal, confirming that measurements of this nature on dried skulls should only be related to periodontal conditions with caution.

Museum skull specimens from 224 Arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus) were examined macroscopically using an established protocol for examination of mammalian skull specimens. Foxes were collected from coastal and island regions of Alaska, USA, except for two individuals. Collection years ranged from 1931 to 2016 with most specimens collected during the 1950s and 1960s. The study population comprised more females (n = 134, 59.8%) than males (n = 83, 37.0%) and individuals of unknown sex (n = 7, 3.1%). There were 108 (48.2%) young adults, 115 (51.3%) adults, and one (0.4%) individual of unknown age. A

The Basic Erosive Wear Examination (BEWE) is a practical index for screening tooth wear, using a 4-point ordinal scale (0-3). The highest score is recorded in each sextant and a total score (or BEWE sextant cumulative) is calculated per subject. This study aims to investigate if the BEWE sextant cumulative score compares to one comprising a percentage score from all tooth surfaces and as a highest BEWE per subject. The aim is to assess the validity of this score. A total of 350 subjects were recruited from hospital and general practice in south-east England. Buccal, occlusal and lingual/palata

New dual-phase fluoride toothpastes that contain soluble calcium, phosphate, and baking soda have recently been introduced into the market. These toothpastes are designed to fill in small surface defects in tooth enamel and thereby enhance tooth esthetics such as gloss. This two-part study was designed to assess these superficial mineralizing effects from using one of these products compared with an experimental calcium-containing, bicarbonate-free formulation and a conventional fluoride toothpaste using an intraoral model. Enamel specimens with 4 types of defects were mounted into an intraora

After investigating the literature, we suggest these guidelines for tooth bleaching: If bleaching solutions of high concentration are used, prevent accidental exposure of gingival tissues to the solutions by use of a rubber dam. If using lower concentrations of bleaching solutions, avoid long-term exposures to gingival tissues. To maintain pulp vitality, keep bleaching time and temperatures to a minimum. Check teeth for exposed dentin and enamel fractures. Advise patients that thermal sensitivity may occur after the bleaching procedure and may persist for several days. Prescribe premedication

PUPPOSE: To observe the occlusion effect, acid resistance and abrasion resistance of desensitizer containing NovaMin combined with fluor protector on dentin tubules, in order to provide theoretical basis for clinical treatment of dentin hypersensitivity.
METHODS: Thirty extracted intact and non-carious human premolars for orthodontic treatment were selected and made into 2 mm thick dentin slices. Each slice was cut into 4 parts to form 120 sensitive dentin models and randomly divided into 4 groups (n=30). Distilled water (group A), fluor protector (group B), Ominq desensitizer (group C) and f

Non-carious tooth tissue loss due to abrasion, attrition, abfraction and erosion has become a significant problem, occurring in up to 80 percent of children and in up to 43 percent of adults. Dental erosion is now recognised as an important cause of tooth tissue loss in both children and adults. It is caused by the presence of intrinsic or extrinsic acid of non-bacterial origin in the mouth. Intrinsic sources of acid include vomiting, regurgitation, gastro-oesophageal reflux or rumination. Extrinsic sources of acid are most commonly dietary acids. Medications, a patient's lifestyle choices and

Tooth wear occurs during normal mastication. Pathologic wear, including abrasion and erosion, may also take place. Formation of reactionary and reparative dentin and obturation of dentinal tubules are biologic responses that compensate for the loss of tissue. Physical trauma to teeth will affect the blood supply to the pulp. Extensive physical trauma may result in the formation of mineralized, often bonelike tissue in the pulp chamber. Minor trauma, such as that associated with orthodontic tooth movement, may exert transient effects on the pulp or it may result in permanent structural changes.

Clinically relevant values for revolutions per minute (rpm), time, and load should be used when one evaluates effects of abrasive slurries on teeth. However, in the past, these variables have not been measured in vivo to determine clinical means. This study describes an instrument and computer software which monitored rpm, time, and load used by 29 clinicians during routine oral prophylaxes performed on 76 patients. Grand means and standard deviations determined for the three variables were: rpm, mean = 2571 (s = 739): time per tooth surface, mean = 4.5 sec (s = 2.9); and load, mean = 145 g (s

The aim of the present study was to describe the structural features characterizing the severe grades of human fluorotic enamel (TF scores 5-9) with particular emphasis on the posteruptive changes in severely fluorosed teeth. Dental fluorosis is a subsurface hypomineralized lesion deep to a well-mineralized outer enamel surface, which in severe cases breaks apart shortly after eruption. Early signs of posteruptive changes comprise small defects corresponding to the opening of striae of Retzius. The enamel pits which develop after eruption in more severe cases exhibit an increase in mineral con

Vertebrate enamel preserves a record of fracture-producing strain. Fracturing during the life of the individual is potentially a source of selection for stronger enamel in the course of evolution. To determine if it is possible to recognize such fractures in fossil enamel, cracks in a variety of fossil materials, including enamel-covered holostean scales, crocodilian teeth, theropod and hadrosaurid dinosaur teeth, and mammalian teeth were examined. Cracks that occurred during the life of the individual could be recognized by abrasive wear on edges exposed at the surface of the enamel in areas
