The purpose of this study was to evaluate, radiographically, whether there is similarity in the apical root resorption found in endodontically treated teeth and untreated teeth when they are submitted to orthodontic treatment. From 2,500 treatment records examined, 16 patients were selected who had a maxillary central incisor treated endodontically before initiation of the orthodontic movement, and a vital homologous tooth (for control). Measurements were made by comparing the periapical radiographs taken before and after the orthodontic treatment. There was no statistically significant differ

This study compared the accuracy of Root ZX mini apex locator in presence of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) in primary molars with and without apical resorption. Sixty-four extracted primary lower molar teeth with 32 root resorption and 32 without resorption were selected. To determine the actual working length (AWL), a K-file was inserted into the root canal until the tip of the file was visible at the major foramen or the resolution level. It was then withdrawn 1 mm. This value was recorded as AWL. The teeth were then divided subgroups (with/without NaOCl). To determine the electronic working l

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to determine the arch form of the root apices of normally erupting teeth and then determine the differences in the location of the apex of impacted canines relative to normally erupting canines. In addition, we sought to determine whether the labiopalatal position of the impacted canines influences the position of the apices.
METHODS: The study included 21 patients with unerupted canines that subsequently had a normal eruption, 21 patients with palatally impacted canines, 27 patients with labially impacted canines, and 17 patients with midalveolus i

AIM: To evaluate ex vivo the accuracy of the iPex multi-frequency electronic apex locator (NSK Ltd, Tokyo, Japan) for working length determination in primary molar teeth.
METHODOLOGY: One calibrated examiner determined the working length in 20 primary molar teeth (total of 33 root canals). Working length was measured both visually, with the placement of a K-file 1 mm short of the apical foramen or the most coronal limit of root resorption, and electronically using the electronic apex locator iPex, according to the manufacturers' instructions. Data were analysed statistically using the intracl

Multiple idiopathic external root resorptions of permanent teeth are an infrequent phenomenon. A case report of a patient with multiple idiopathic external apical root resorptions is presented. This case is unusual in that extensive resorption is found bilaterally in supraerupted maxillary molar teeth. The pattern of severe resorption affecting only maxillary supraerupted teeth appears to be unique. No significant systemic, dental, or familial findings could be identified as a possible cause.

External root resorption may occur as a consequence of trauma, orthodontic treatment, bacterial infection or incomplete sealing of the root canal system (bacterial re-infection), and lead to crater formation on the resorbed apex. This would deform the root apex surface, and cause loss of apical constriction. Depending on the extent of the resorptive process, different treatment regimens have been proposed. A 34-year-old male patient presented with an intra-radicular retainer and an inadequate filling on tooth #21, as well as a radiographic image suggesting periapical bone rarefaction. After ro

Information regarding the influence of resorption and glide paths on debris extrusion in primary teeth is lacking. Therefore, we evaluated debris extrusion with and without resorption and with and without the use of a path file in primary molar teeth prepared with ProTaper Ultimate (PTU) Prime and TruNatomy (TRN) Prime rotary file systems. Forty resorbed and forty non-resorbed primary molar teeth were collected. Both groups were divided into four subgroups (n = 10). The Eppendorf tubes were weighed pre-debris. The distal canals of the teeth were prepared with PTU Prime and TRN Prime file syste

Ankylosis is generally discovered following resistance to orthodontic displacement of an impacted canine. This retrospective study, drawing on direct perioperative observation of impacted teeth and of their sites, is intended, among other things, to analyze the causes of resistance to orthodontic movement and to report on the therapeutic interest of the surgical tooth displacement technique in this type of clinical situation. We demonstrate that primary coronal ankylosis can be detected by the orthodontic practitioner using radiographic records, that cervical ankylosis consequent to operative

Lateral luxation in primary maxillary incisors is a traumatic injury that can lead to darkening of the tooth, pulp necrosis, root resorption, and damage to the permanent teeth. Management of this kind of trauma typically includes pulpectomy or extraction in cases of root resorption. However, in young children, removal of the tooth may be psychological stressing, especially for the parents, while increased mobility can make immediate endodontic treatment difficult to perform. This article outlines a severe palatal luxation on the maxillary right central incisor treated with conservative managem

The authors evaluated periodontal parameters following apical surgery using a new marginal sulcular incision. In 65 cases, surgical access was achieved by means of a sulcular incision technique without the involvement of the adjacent periodontia and the interproximal papillae and in 33 cases by means of a submarginal trapezoidal technique. Periodontal parameters (probing pocket depth, gingival recession, clinical attachment loss, and tooth mobility [periotest]) were recorded at baseline and after 6 months. Scar formation and the loss of papilla height were evaluated photographically. No signif

This article describes a case where during an extraction of a primary molar's root remnant, the successor permanent tooth was accidentally extruded. The extruded tooth was immediately repositioned to its right position in the socket and it erupted normally after a short time. After 2 years, a routine clinical examination revealed normal appearance of the premolar in the dental arch. A radiograph demonstrated an obliterated coronal part of the pulp, normal root length, a slightly open apex and no periapical inflammation.

Practitioners face several challenges during the root canal treatment of teeth with wide or immature apices, one of which is working length determination. There is relatively little data regarding the value of radiography and electronic apex locator (EAL) use when root formation is incomplete, and supplementary measurement techniques may be helpful. This review considers length determination for canals with wide or completely open apices in permanent and primary teeth. The Ovid Medline, Web of Science and Scopus databases were searched individually and in combinations to August 2012 using the
