The forensic dentist can estimate the age of an individual by observing the developing dentition. Systematic observations can provide accurate age estimations depending of the criteria used and the experience and training of the dentist. Anatomical, histological, and radiographic examinations of the teeth are of great value. Admittedly, some of the aforementioned methods are complicated and require prolonged time periods to perform. Alternative methods of age estimation may be required when rapid results are demanded by the police or other agencies. It is, however, the obligation of the forens

A residual cyst, as the name implies, is a radicular, lateral periodotal, dentigerous or any other cyst that has persisted after it's associated tooth has been lost. Residual cysts show more predilection in males and they commonly affect the maxillary region. Usually, residual cysts are asymptomatic and calcifications occurring in the residual cysts are quite rare. We are reporting a case of symptomatic residual cyst, associated with calcifications involving the anterior region of the body of the mandible in a 60-year-old male patient. The pathogenesis, clinical, radiological features and diff

The objective of this investigation was to determine if there is a difference in dental age of maturation between adolescents treated in the 1970s and those treated in the 1990s. Records of 150 Caucasian patients, 8.5 to 14.5 years old and treated in a private orthodontic office between 1972 and 1974, were randomly selected; records of another 150 patients of the same race and age range but treated between 1992 and 1994 were also collected. The percentage of calcification of the mandibular canines was rated according to methods used by Demirjian, who divided tooth development into eight segmen

This article describes an unusual case of internal resorption in primary molars followed by apposition of calcified deposits. Expanded borders of the coronal pulp chambers of all four first primary molars were first observed on a routine recall examination at age 7 years 7 months. Exposure of the process to the surrounding bone linked the bone to the calcified tissue formed in the pulp and caused ankylosis and infraocclusion of the affected teeth. The internal resorption and remodelling process in this case were of an unknown aetiology. Two possible explanations are suggested: (1) pulp respons

In most animal species, acute fluorosis is triggered by the accidental consumption of substances with a high content of fluorine, widely used in pest control. Fluorine normally concentrates in bones and teeth, and forms nearly 0.05% of these structures in mature animals, positively contributing to increase resistance of enamel to caries and favoring mineralization after eruption, a process which increases with age. The present article submits a form of study of fluorosis, stressing due warning as to its harmful effects.

When the apical focus (root cyst) is treated, if the tooth concerned can be preserved, the root canal should first be enlarged and cleaned sufficiently, and then sealed with filling materials. However, if an expensive prothesis is placed on the crown of the tooth concerned, or if the root canal is blocked with a post core of calcification, root canal treatment becomes difficult from a practical point of view. We therefore tried irradiation using the Nd-YAG laser, which is known for its high transmissibility into teeth, to the root canal, and the apical area. In its histological images it is co

Diagnosing congenitally missing second premolars (SPs) in early childhood is challenging due to variations in their calcification ages. In this study, we investigated the correlation between calcification grades of SPs and other permanent posterior teeth to aid clinicians in the early diagnosis of congenitally missing SPs. This cohort study retrospectively evaluated 6813 images from 9261 panoramic image records of children aged 42-78 months. The Nolla method was used to score calcification grades of first and SP and first and second permanent molars. Images were divided into 6 subgroups based

Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is an inherited, systemic disorder, caused by loss-of-function variants of the ALPL gene encoding the enzyme tissue non-specific alkaline phosphatase (TNSALP). HPP is characterized by low serum TNSALP concentrations associated with defective bone mineralization and increased fracture risk. Dental manifestations have been reported as the exclusive feature (odontohypophosphatasia) and in combination with skeletal complications. Enzyme replacement therapy (asfotase alfa) has been shown to improve respiratory insufficiency and skeletal complications in HPP patients, while it

Raman spectroscopy has been used to demonstrate, for the first time, that calcium mineralization in the core of the major lateral teeth of the chiton Acanthopleura echinata takes place as an ordered process, with crystalline carbonated apatite being the first mineral deposited. Deposition begins at the top of the tooth core, under the so-called tab region, progresses down the interior surface of the tab and lepidocrocite layer, and then extends outwards to the anterior surface. Mineralization is not initiated until the lepidocrocite layer has isolated the core of the tooth from the magnetite c

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy and long-term outcomes of regenerative endodontic therapy (RET) assisted by a concentrated growth factor (CGF) scaffold in the management of chronic apical periodontitis associated with pulp necrosis of immature permanent teeth caused by bilateral apical fractures.
METHODS: A 10-year-old girl presented with bilateral mandibular second premolars (teeth #35 and #45) complicated with chronic periapical periodontitis secondary to apical fractures. At the first visit, infection control was achieved through debridement and root canal preparation, afte

Introduction. If the teeth are impacted by a chronic irritant, the pulp space possibly will undergo calcific changes that may impede access opening during root canal treatment. In such cases that conventional endodontic treatment is impossible or impractical, intentional replantation may be considered as a last solution to preserve the tooth. Methods. After failing to perform conventional root canal therapy for a necrotic calcified right mandibular second premolar, the tooth was gently extracted. The root apex was resected and the root end cavity was prepared and filled with calcium enriched m

Four temporary teeth, extracted for periodontal infection reasons, from a 53-months-old child with osteogenesis imperfecta, have been coated in methyl metacrylate and prepared for microradiographic analysis and light microscopic study. The enamel and dentin of three teeth (51, 65 and 85) don't show any particularity, some how the cementum is remarkably thin. Pulp chambers was large and contain a great number of calcifications. Some of them present a radial striation around a radio-transparent center, and when coloured with blue of methylen, they revealed inflammatory or fibroblastic cells. The

External resorption of teeth by odontoclasts is a common condition of unknown origin affecting domestic cats. Odontoclastic resorptive lesions involve the enamel cementum junction (ECJ, cervix) and root surface, leading to extensive loss of enamel, dentine and cementum. This study was undertaken in order to determine whether features of the surface anatomy and mineralization of feline teeth could explain why odontoclastic resorptive lesions are so prevalent in this species. Backscattered electron scanning electron microscopy was used to study enamel, cementum and dentine in non-resorbed, undem

The present study describes the detailed changes in carbonate distribution throughout the different stages of development in human and bovine enamel, from early formation to maturation. Twenty-two human maxillary and mandibular deciduous anterior teeth and 46 bovine teeth were studied. The major mineral ions, calcium and phosphorus, were also analyzed to facilitate comparison of carbonate content with progressing mineralization. The results showed that as enamel matured and mineral concentration increased, carbonate concentration decreased. The observed decrease in percent carbonate per weight

This case report describes an unusual phenomenon where resorption occurred in the crown of an unerupted permanent molar. It was an incidental radiological finding. After eruption the tooth was extracted. Histological examination revealed resorption of enamel and dentine, and partial replacement by calcific material. The possible aetiology of the condition is discussed.

BACKGROUND: Bisphosphonates used for the treatment of osteoporosis, hypercalcemia, or heterotopic calcifications can cause serious adverse dental events such as osteonecrosis of the maxillary and mandibular bones. However, the effects in childhood remain scarcely explored.
CASE PRESENTATIONS: We encountered two children who had started bisphosphonate therapy before completion of the primary dentition. No systemic disease causing congenital delayed tooth eruption was diagnosed. Although the children's height and weight increased with age, their tooth eruption was significantly delayed compared

Cone beam CT (CBCT) has been widely used in endodontics in recent years. To promote the rational and effective application of CBCT in endodontics, this article introduces the principle of "As low as diagnostically acceptable being indication-oriented and patient-specific (ALADAIP)" for radiographic examination in endodontics. It summarizes and discusses key points of CBCT images evaluation in root canal anatomical variations, dens invaginatus, pulp calcification, odontogenic maxillary sinusitis, root fractures, periapical lesions, and post-endodontic treatment pain. Additionally, it explores h
