Dental traumatology : official publication of International Association for Dental Traumatology2011eng
Re-restoring endodontically treated teeth with complicated crown or crown root fractures is a major challenge for dental practitioners, because they can present difficulties for successful treatment. This report describes the management of supragingivally complicated crown fracture of an endodontically treated maxillary lateral incisor. The involved tooth was restored with the reattachment procedure using light transmitting fiber post. After 11 months, the reattached tooth had a satisfying function, favorable physiological and esthetic outcomes and healthy surrounding periodontal structures.

A search of the medical and dental records at the Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania was conducted to identify dogs that received full or partial prosthodontic crowns over a 13-year period (2000-2012). Forty-one dogs with a total of 68 prosthodontic crowns were identified. Further criteria for acceptance into the study included presence of complete medical records containing adequate information pertaining to the procedures performed, and current follow-up either by telephone, electronic mail, or via in-person examination. Treatment was considered to be succe

BACKGROUND: The use of fiber reinforced composite post in restoration of endodontically treated teeth have been found to prevent irreparable root fracture and the fact that the post is bonded to the root giving a monobloc restoration, also strengthens the tooth. This preliminary study aimed to evaluate the survival of endodontically treated teeth with compromised coronal tooth structure restored with glass-fiber posts after 6 months.
METHODOLOGY: Twenty endodontically treated teeth with less than 50% coronal tooth structure, were assessed and restored with glass fiber reinforced post cemented

INTRODUCTION: A major complication after endodontic treatment is persistent pain on biting or chewing. Although unsuccessful endodontic treatment can account for such pain, pain to chewing and biting can also be a result of an unsupported or propagated crown fracture. Crown fractures that extend apically result in deterioration of the localized periodontium and ultimate loss of the tooth. To date, no predictable treatment for apically extending crown fractures exists.
METHODS: Three cases of nonsurgical excision of a propagated crown fracture and the repair of the subsequent iatrogenic perfor

Dynamic fracture energies and patterns of fracture in extracted human central incisors were determined for groups of intact controls, groups with Vita Dur N crowns, Vita Hi Ceram crowns, Dicor crowns and porcelain veneers. Teeth were struck on their middle labial surfaces by a pendulum impact device. The mean fracture energy for teeth with Dicor crowns was significantly lower than for all other groups (P < 0.05). Control tooth crowns fractured obliquely in an apical-direction. Vita Dur N and Dicor crowns shattered, the underlying tooth usually fracturing in the plane of the impact force. Vita

The purpose of this case report is to describe a step-by-step method of restoring function (and esthetics) to infraoccluded second primary molars using a crown-form crown, in a case of bilateral congenital missing premolars. This technique restores form and function, with a minimal reduction to the tooth. It also conserves tooth material and permits good bonding of the resin-based composite to the enamel. The crown-form resin-based composite restoration is an easy and inexpensive solution in cases of infraoccluded teeth. Yet, patients must be warned about the possible failure of the crown and

Surgical crown lengthening should not be attempted when tooth fractures extend into the middle third of the root. Excessive bone reduction on the fractured tooth and necessary blending of osseous contours over adjacent teeth may result in mobility or furcation involvement. In addition, the necessary osseous surgery may create precipitous changes in the bony architecture that will be bridged by soft tissues. This results in increased pocket depth and an unhealthy situation. If the tooth in question has a hopeless prognosis or the osseous surgical procedure would create a poor crown-root ratio,

Aesthetic rehabilitation of sub-gingival crown fractures of the maxillary anterior tooth present extreme challenges to the dental surgeon. The prognosis of traumatized tooth depends on accurate diagnosis and physiological status of the involved tooth. This paper discusses two different cases of subgingival fracture of maxillary anterior tooth that was managed by two different technique of forced eruption. After endodontic management and forced eruption, esthetic rehabilitation was completed by placing post and core, and all ceramic crown. The final result was successful and resulted in good es

The conventional treatment methods for a subgingival crown root fracture are (1) extract the residual root and restore with a fixed bridge; (2) crown restoration with a deep subgingival margin; and (3) exposure of the fracture line by a crown lengthening operation and restoration with a crown. However, these methods require reduction of either the tooth structure or the periodontal support. Improvements in endodontic and orthodontic therapy followed Heithersay in 1973 to combine the use of endodontic and orthodontic therapy to manage subgingival crown root fractures--the so-called forced erupt

PURPOSE: The crown-implant ratio is defined as the physical relationship between each individual restoration's parts located both inside and outside the bone. This relationship represents the physical concept of a type I lever, which may be of biomechanical importance in implant treatment outcomes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Specific patient data related to fixed implant prostheses were retrieved and studied in an effort to clinically and radiographically correlate crown-implant ratios.
RESULTS: Recorded marginal bone resorption around implants (2.11 +/- 1.30 mm) at the end of a defined observat

Dental implants have become an option for replacement of lost canine teeth in cats. Although cats appear to manage well after a canine extraction, complications such as lip entrapment can occur after maxillary canine tooth extraction. Even cats with a complicated crown fracture of the maxillary canine tooth that have had root canal therapy can develop lip entrapment. This can lead to painful lip ulcers and potential need for further dental treatment. Canine tooth replacement with a dental implant and prosthodontic crown is, in the authors' experience, a predictable option that can be offered t

BACKGROUND: Complicated tooth fractures can be the unfortunate result of orofacial trauma and can offer a therapeutic challenge for the dentist. A conservative solution for gaining supragingival sound tooth structure often includes orthodontic forced eruption. Usually, this procedure is carried out by applying extrusive force after placing a provisional acrylic Richmond crown on the tooth. However, this long-lasting dental treatment may jeopardize the coronal seal of the root canal space, leading to microleakage and endodontic failure.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Orthodontic forced eruption demands app

To determine whether tooth shape and position are constant within tooth types, dental casts of 68 Indians (age range, 10-32 years; mean, 18.72 years) were analyzed. The casts were selected from a larger sample and met the following criteria: Class I molar and canine relationships; overjet and overbite within normal limits; well-related vertical, transverse, and anteroposterior relationships with pleasing profiles and well-aligned arches; and no supernumerary teeth or large restorations. None of the subjects had received orthodontic treatment, and all were in good health and exhibited normal gr

This case report features a female patient with the chief complaint of needing to replace an anterior crown. After a comprehensive oral assessment and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) radiographic examination, it was determined that the crown on Tooth #9 was subgingivally fractured. The procedure involved atraumatic extraction of Tooth #9, followed by immediate implant placement. Xenograft bone graft material was placed to complete the space between the buccal bone and the implant. A connective tissue graft (CTG), 1 mm thick and 5 mm wide, was harvested from the palate and placed. The fina

Rather than focusing solely on cost-effectiveness and accessibility, it is also important to assess the quality of treatments available under Japan's Public Health Insurance System (PHIS). The purpose of this retrospective study was to assess the survival rate of metal crowns used to replace first molars in a clinical setting. Only metal crowns made of 12% gold-silver-palladium alloy placed on first molars and available under the PHIS were included. The endpoint was removal/separation of a crown or extraction of the tooth. A total of 603 crowns fitted at 20 dental offices were investigated. Du

AIM: To investigate whether: 1) in the adhesive era, a full-crown restoration in a molar tooth is more resistant compared with an overlay-type restoration; b) a posterior indirect adhesive restoration (PIAR) is similar to a sound tooth from a mechanical point of view.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy extracted molars were divided into five groups (1. Butt Joint; 2. Full Bevel; 3. Shoulder; 4. Full Crown; 5. Sound Tooth (control); N = 14) and prepared with four different PIAR overlay design types (according to an adhesthetics classification). Seven expert dentists performed all the preparation a

INTRODUCTION: A number of vital pulp therapy techniques have been recommended to preserve pulp vitality in teeth with complicated crown fractures, especially in young patients. Calcium hydroxide has been the gold standard as a pulp capping material, but recently mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) has been recommended. This case report describes the treatment of tooth discoloration caused by white MTA (WMTA) used for the management of a complicated crown fracture.
METHODS: A partial pulpotomy was performed with the use of WMTA after a complicated crown fracture of the upper right central incisor

The aim of this study was to document variation of deciduous tooth formation and eruption. The material comprises 121 individuals of known or estimated age (using tooth length) from Spitalfields in London, and radiographs of 61 healthy living children aged 2-5 years. Other skeletal material from two medieval Scottish archaeological sites (Whithorn, N=74; Newark Bay, N=59) was also examined. Stages of crown and root formation as well as eruption (alveolar, midway, and occlusal levels) were assessed for each developing maxillary and mandibular tooth from radiographs or direct vision. Age of atta

Medical and dental records of Veterinary Dental Specialties and Oral Surgery were searched to identify dogs that received full metal prosthodontic crowns on canine teeth, using a feather or knife edge preparation between 2005 and 2017. A total of 160 teeth in 84 dogs were included in the study. Current follow-up by telephone, electronic mail, or electronic messaging was conducted, in addition to thorough record review for in-person recheck examinations. Treatment was considered successful if the prosthodontic crown was in place and no further or additional injury to the tooth had occurred at t
