Multidisciplinary approach to the rehabilitation of a tooth with two trauma episodes: systematic review and report of a case.

Studies have shown that some children and adolescents are affected only once with dental trauma, while others seem to be accident-prone and suffer from multiple dental trauma episodes. Less is known about treatment consequences related to repeated traumatic dental injuries to the same tooth and treatment guidelines are not well established. Complicated crown fractures and crown-root fractures pose difficulties for dentists to establish adequate treatment plans because these fractures require multidisciplinary knowledge and approach for a correct case planning and prognosis. The objective of th

Management of Concomitant Intrusion and Complicated Crown-Root Fracture Injury of Maxillary Central Incisors in a Child.

Dental intrusions are a severe type of injury because they impact the neurovascular supply of the tooth as well as the supporting tissues which predispose the tooth to necrosis and root resorption. Management of these injuries requires repositioning of the teeth under close monitoring to avoid complications. The management becomes more comprehensive when an intrusion is combined with other injuries, such as a crown-root fracture. This case report represents a 4-year follow-up of a child who suffered from a concomitant injury of intrusion and complicated crown-root fracture to the maxillary imm

Lateral luxation: Is root resorption an unavoidable complication?

Lateral luxation is defined as a traumatic displacement of a tooth in any direction other than axially. A laterally luxated tooth is often immobile because of its bony lock. It produces a high metallic sound during percussion. Pulp sensibility testing is likely to be negative during the initial follow-up. However, the tooth should be monitored until a definitive pulp diagnosis is made. Treatment includes local anesthesia, suturing soft tissue injuries, manual repositioning of the luxated tooth, and stabilization with a flexible splint for 4 weeks. Given the risk of pulp necrosis following late

Posture analysis during tooth extraction.

INTRODUCTION: Tooth extraction is one of the clinical internship requirements in Japan. Human posture during tooth extraction is important since poor posture can cause failure of the safe operation and musculoskeletal injuries. Only a few studies aimed to evaluate the posture, but most of them used manual or complex measurement methods which can lead to some inconvenient problems such as subjective biases, quantitativeness, and device availability. Thanks to the recent advancement of computer vision and technology, pose estimation has been widely used for kinematic analysis. However, none of t

Maintaining a Hopeless Traumatized Maxillary Central Incisor as a Transient Treatment Option: A Case Report with a 3-Years Follow-Up.

An open apices tooth is among the rare types of traumatic dental injuries is horizontal root fracture. Many factors may affect the treatment and prognosis of root fractures, like the time between trauma and treatment, degree of dislocation and mobility, stage of tooth development, fracture site, and patient's age. This case presents a horizontal root fracture of a maxillary central incisor in an 8-year-old boy. The tooth was considered for extraction due to excessive mobility and deep probing depth, but the patient's parents refused to extract the tooth. After one year, during the follow-up ex

Delayed tooth replantation after traumatic avulsion: a case report.

Avulsion is a serious injury which causes damage to dental and supportive tissues, ranging from 1-16 % among dental injuries and it mostly occurs in maxillary incisors. This report presents a case of replantation of a traumatically avulsed central incisor. The left central incisor of an 8 year-old boy with open apex was avulsed and was left in unclean and dry conditions. Tooth was replaced after 270 min and splinted. After 24 hours, tooth was treated endodontically. The calcium hydroxide paste was applied as intracanal medicament. After one year the calcium hydroxide was not replaced and was m

Minimally invasive treatment of an extruded deciduous tooth - Case report.

When a traumatic dental injury affects the deciduous teeth, the main management is to regularly review the patient until the successor permanent tooth erupts to avoid further consequences to the affected tooth and, especially, sequelae in the tooth germs of the successor permanent tooth. This report describes a case of a tooth extrusion in a 4-year-old male treated with a minimally invasive approach. After 4 years of follow-up, there was a mild disturbance (demarcated opacity in the vestibular surface) and a satisfactory result with normal eruption of the permanent successor tooth.

Challenges in treating traumatically intruded and ankylosed permanent incisors: a case report with a multidisciplinary approach.

This report discusses the challenges, complications and management of traumatic intrusion injuries affecting the permanent dentition. A case is described where trimming of the incisal edge of a severely intruded and ankylosed upper lateral incisor resulted in an unexpected re-eruption of the tooth. It is suggested that the vibrations from drilling may have disrupted the ankylosis, initiating spontaneous re-eruption and this approach could provide a minimally invasive and conservative pathway to treating ankylosed teeth. Clinical Relevance: To date no effective treatment has been described to r

Pathological differences in the bone healing processes between tooth extraction socket and femoral fracture.

Despite various reports on the bone healing processes of tooth extraction socket and long bone fracture, the differences of pathological changes during these healing processes remain elusive. This study aims to elucidate the underlying mechanisms behind the pathophysiology of bone regeneration between the tooth extraction socket and femoral fractures through a comparative study. Eight-week-old male mice were used in the experiments. The maxillary first molar was extracted, and intramedullary nailing femoral fracture (semistabilized fracture repair) was performed in the femur. Pathological chan

The effect of orthodontic extrusion on traumatically intruded teeth.

The management of traumatically intruded permanent incisors is controversial. Some authors suggest a decreased incidence of ankylosis in cases treated with orthodontic extrusion. The purpose of this study was to examine two common management techniques for traumatic intrusion, orthodontic extrusion, and observation for re-eruption. The four first premolars of three shepherd dogs were traumatically intruded with a mallet while a holding device was used to prevent tooth fracture. Five to 7 days following the injury, orthodontic force was applied unilaterally while the contralateral tooth served

A Retrospective Study of Dental Trauma in Israeli Military Personnelin the Swords of Iron War.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) are common but understudied consequences of combat-related craniofacial trauma. The Swords of Iron (SOI) War exposed Israel Defense Forces (IDF) personnel to high-velocity injuries in extreme battlefield conditions. This study aims to characterize the prevalence, anatomical distribution, and associated complications of TDIs among IDF soldiers during the SOI war, and to explore their operational and clinical implications. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study using the IDF Trauma Registry (IDF-TR) from October 2023 to February 2025 was conducted.

Treatment imprudence leading to missed tooth fragment.

Traumatic dental injuries (TDI) represent one of the most common oral health problems in children and adolescents. Dental trauma requires a special consideration when it accompanies soft tissue lacerations. Tooth fragments occasionally penetrate into soft tissues and may cause severe complications. This article describes the case of a 12-year-old girl with a fractured tooth fragment embedded in the lower lip for 4 months, which went unnoticed at her primary health centre. This report highlights the importance of proper radiographic diagnosis along with clinical examination after trauma in orde

Extraction of a Central Incisor From the Plica Fimbriata in the Outpatient Family Medicine Office: What's That Rattle?

All-terrain vehicle (ATV) accidents are all too common in the United States and can result in long-term injuries. Therefore, proper after-care is essential for the recovery of an injured person. Here, we present a case where an embedded tooth was overlooked for almost an entire year after an ATV accident. No imaging was performed despite multiple clinic and emergency department visits. The tooth was not discovered to be embedded within the tongue until it later started migrating and protruding. Therefore, extraction was performed in the office.

Management of Traumatic Injury to Maxillary Central Incisors associated with Inverted Mesiodens: A Case Report.

Maxillary incisors are the most frequently injured teeth in the primary and permanent dentition. Stage of adolescence show a significant number of dental injuries as they engage in contact sports. Children with accident prone profile, i.e. class II division I or class I type II malocclusion are more prone for injuries because of the proclined maxillary incisors. Supernumerary teeth are those that are additional to the normal complement. They occur in single or multiple, unilateral or bilateral in either of the jaws. This paper reports the presence of an inverted supernumerary tooth in the righ

Deficiency of the SMOC2 matricellular protein impairs bone healing and produces age-dependent bone loss.

Secreted extracellular matrix components which regulate craniofacial development could be reactivated and play roles in adult wound healing. We report a patient with a loss-of-function of the secreted matricellular protein SMOC2 (SPARC related modular calcium binding 2) presenting severe oligodontia, microdontia, tooth root deficiencies, alveolar bone hypoplasia, and a range of skeletal malformations. Turning to a mouse model, Smoc2-GFP reporter expression indicates SMOC2 dynamically marks a range of dental and bone progenitors. While germline Smoc2 homozygous mutants are viable, tooth number

Unusual case of an intraocular tooth as a foreign body after a car accident.

PURPOSE: We report a case of a 56-year-old man who sustained open-globe ocular trauma in his left eye during a vehicular accident, resulting in the identification and surgical removal of intraocular tooth fragments. OBSERVATIONS: The corneal wound was closed during initial surgery. An intraocular foreign body was not detected on mode B echography, complicating the diagnostic process. During a subsequent surgery, a vitrectomy was performed, leading to the discovery and removal of an intraocular tooth fragment. Two weeks postoperatively, the patient's best-corrected visual acuity was 20/800. C

The purpose of this study was to investigate the prognosis of 50 consecutively autotransplanted teeth to the maxillary incisor region. Thirty-five were transplanted in cases of traumatic injuries, eleven in cases of agenesis and four in cases with impaction of maxillary canines. The average follow-up time was 7 years and 6 months (range 4-17 years). The transplants were examined clinically in respect of tooth vitality and radiographically in respect of root canal obliteration, periradicular changes, root formation, and root length. The results show a success rate of 82 per cent. It is conclude
