A radiographic four-year follow-up study of asymptomatic mandibular third molars in young adults.

Fifty-five asymptomatic mandibular third molars (M3) in 34 dental students (mean age 20.6 years at the start of the study) were followed radiographically for 4 years. Based on clinical evaluation the 55 teeth included 20 almost erupted, 13 partly erupted and 22 non-erupted M3. The following were assessed on the radiographs: root development, level of eruption, sagittal angulation, resorption, pericoronitis/bony pockets/paradental cysts and widening of the periodontal space/dentigerous cysts. The state of 21 teeth (38 per cent) was radiographically changed at the end of the observation period.

Clinical implications of early loss of a lower deciduous canine.

In crowded dental arches, the permanent lateral incisors often erupt and resorb the mesial portion of the root of deciduous canines, causing their premature loss. Therefore, knowledge on clinical aspects related to etiologic factors is necessary to pediatric orthodontists and clinical dentists for diagnosis and treatment with regard to incisor crowding and adjustment. The aim of the present study was to describe a clinical case characterized by the unilateral loss of a lower deciduous canine, offering clinical considerations on this issue and discussing the various procedures implemented to pr

Extraction of primary canine tooth buds: prevalence and associated dental abnormalities in a group of Ethiopian Jewish children.

Recent publications have described a common belief, held in rural areas in Africa, that unerupted primary canines cause diarrhoea, vomiting and fever in infants. To relieve these symptoms a traditional native healer extracts these tooth buds. The emigration of Ethiopian Jews to Israel in 1991 allowed an investigation of this practice among this community. A group of 59 children (27 boys and 32 girls) aged 3-12 years were examined clinically and radiographically. Evidence was found of extraction of 63 primary canine buds in 35 (59%) of the children. Extraction of one canine was found in 16 chil

Interdisciplinary management of gingival recession and pathologic teeth migration-Revisiting dental aesthetics.

Poor aesthetics due to gingival recession can be a common concern among patients, specifically in individuals with gummy or high smile line. Various factors including patient related, site specific and technical factors need to be considered while treating gingival recession, as they all have a significant bearing on treatment success. Patients having aesthetic problems due to exposed root surfaces should have surgical root coverage procedures. Pathologic migration of anterior teeth is another aesthetic and functional problem that may be associated with advanced or chronic periodontal disease.

Premature loss of primary anterior teeth due to trauma--potential short- and long-term sequelae.

Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) can result in the premature loss of primary anterior teeth due to an immediate avulsion, extraction later after the injury because of poor prognosis or late complications, or early exfoliation. There are a number of potential considerations or sequelae as a result of this premature loss that have been cited in the dental literature, which include esthetics, quality of life, eating, speech development, arch integrity (space loss), development and eruption of the permanent successors, and development of oral habits. This article provides a comprehensive review of

Pathways and fate of migratory cells during late tooth organogenesis.

Tissue recombination experiments and cell lineage analyses of the developing neural crest have documented the role and central pathways of migratory cells during early craniofacial development. In the present study, regional pathways of cells during late peripheral morphogenesis were investigated using the crown stage tooth organ as a model. Homing targets during tooth integument formation were analyzed to understand the fate of migratory cells involved in late tooth organogenesis and the developmental origin of periodontal tissues. After surgical removal of the oral mucosa, the oral aspect of

Orthodontic tooth movement into jaw regions treated with synthetic bone substitute.

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontic tooth movement is fraught with risks and complications. Root resorption is the most frequent and important outcome which may arise due to inappropriate force magnitude or tooth movement into dense or altered bone. This study was aimed to demonstrate histologic changes in tooth roots following movement into a jaw region treated with synthetic bone substitute. Another objective was to evaluate the method of experimental tooth movement using an animal model. MATERIAL AND METHODS: One mandibular premolar was extracted in each of three pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus). The ex

Extraoral removal of a transmigrant mandibular canine associated with a dentigerous cyst.

Although the maxillary permanent canine is frequently misplaced, misplacement of the mandibular canine is a comparatively rare event. Pre-eruptive migration of a tooth across the midline is called transmigration. This condition has not been reported for teeth other than canines. Dentigerous cysts can involve any tooth, but mandibular canines are rarely affected like premolars and molars. Odontogenic cysts associated with impacted teeth are usually removed through an intraoral approach. However, on rare occasion, an extraoral approach is required to remove these lesions. A case of transmigrant

Evaluation of periodontal changes following intra-alveolar prosthesis for maxillary cheek tooth extraction in ponies.

This study investigated the placement of an intra-alveolar prosthesis of bone substitute on gingival/periodontal health in 5 ponies following repulsion of cheek teeth 108 and 208. In each pony, one randomly chosen alveolus was allowed to heal by second intention while the other was filled with a non-resorbable, biocompatible bone substitute. At 6, 12 and 24-months after surgery, both maxillary arches were evaluated for wear abnormalities and for gingival health using a periodontal scoring system. Recorded changes included development of overgrowths on mandibular cheek teeth, widening of maxill

[Biological basis of orthodontic tooth movement].

The effect of orthodontic therapy is dependent of the biological possibilities and limitations of the dento-alveolar complex. Biomechanical effects determine the first phase of tooth movement. In the second phase hyalinisation occurs in almost all cases. Elimination of the hyalinised tissue is associated with undermining bone resorption. Next, 'real' tooth movement starts. At the pressure side the normal structure of the periodontal ligament is destroyed and so is the tooth attachment. At the tension side deposition of trabecular bone is found and the tooth attachment remains. The regulation o

Transmigration of mandibular canines: report of six cases and review of the literature.

Six young adults were found to have transmigrated mandibular canines. One patient presented with two transmigrated canines. Of the seven impacted teeth, the left mandibular canines was involved in five instances and the right two. In all patients, the primary canine was present in the dental arch. A supernumerary tooth was disclosed on the panoramic radiograph of two patients. Five patients underwent surgical removal of the transmigrated tooth from an intraoral approach. One patient experienced transient postoperative paresthesia in the zone innervated by the mental nerve. When the transmigrat

Drifting, tipping, supraeruption, and segmental alveolar bone growth.

Drifting, tipping, supraeruption, and segmental alveolar bone growth are the four major forms of nonorthodontic intraoral tooth movement. They may occur separately but usually occur in combination (Fig. 6). They can occur at any age but tend to be most devastating in their effects on the dentition of the young adult and the elderly. They may represent nonrestorable occlusal situations if combined and present in both arches. Clear diagnosis is therefore essential prior to the formulation of a treatment plan.

Endoscopic Endonasal Removal of an Intranasal Mesiodens: Importance of Three-Dimensional Evaluation for Approach Selection.

Although mesiodens is a frequently encountered supernumerary tooth, its complete migration into the nasal cavity is a rare clinical finding that can lead to various nasal symptoms. This report describes a case of an intranasal mesiodens that had fully migrated out of the maxillary bone and was embedded within the nasal mucosa without any osseous contact. Based on 3-dimensional radiographic evaluation, a prophylactic endoscopic endonasal approach was selected for removal. Under endoscopic visualization, the tooth was identified as a submucosal bulge and successfully extracted through a limited

Osteoprotegerin deficiency causes morphological and quantitative damage in epithelial rests of Malassez.

Epithelial rests of Malassez (ERM), the only odontogenic epithelial structures in periodontal tissue, are proposed to correlate with root resorption, but the detailed mechanism remains unclear. Osteoprotegerin (OPG), the main inhibitor of osteoclastogenesis, plays a pivotal role in inhibiting root resorption, and ERM cells express OPG mRNA in vitro. Thus, in this study, we aimed to clarify OPG expression in ERM in vivo and to explore the role of OPG in ERM to determine whether ERM are associated with root resorption via OPG. We established Opg-knockout (Opg-KO) mice and detected the OPG expres

Unusual migratory foreign body in the neck.

Reports of ingested foreign bodies penetrating the pharynx and migrating through the neck are rare, and mostly involved fish bones. We describe a 44-year-old man who was involved in a motor vehicle accident and accidentally swallowed his tooth. The swallowed tooth penetrated the pharynx and became lodged adjacent to his right thyroid gland. It was successfully removed via neck exploration and the patient recovered well.
