AIMS: To analyze predictors of bruxism, other oral parafunctions, and tooth wear in a group of subjects who had been examined 20 years earlier.
METHODS: Originally, 402 randomly selected 7-, 11-, and 15-year-old subjects were examined clinically and by means of a questionnaire. Twenty years after the first examination, 94% of the original group could be traced, and 320 (85%) completed and returned the questionnaire. Of the oldest group, 100 (81%) also underwent a clinical examination focusing on occlusal factors and function and dysfunction of the masticatory system. For analyses of predictor

The aim of this study was to assess the erosive tooth wear (ETW) at early and mature adulthood in subjects with natural normal occlusion. The sample consisted of 23 untreated subjects with normal occlusion. Dental models were taken longitudinally from the same subjects at 13 (T0), 17 (T1) and 60.9 years of age (T2) at a university. Evaluation of ETW was performed using a modified Basic Erosive Wear Examination (BEWE) index. Interphase changes were evaluated using Friedman and Dunn's test. Ordinal logistic regression was used to assess the influence of sex, dental arch, tooth and dental surface

To assess the prevalence of tooth wear on buccal/facial and lingual/palatal tooth surfaces and identify related risk factors in a sample of young European adults, aged 18-35 years. Calibrated and trained examiners measured tooth wear, using the basic erosive wear examination (BEWE) on in 3187 patients in seven European countries and assessed the impact of risk factors with a previously validated questionnaire. Each individual was characterized by the highest BEWE score recorded for any scoreable surface. Bivariate analyses examined the proportion of participants who scored 2 or 3 in relation t

This cross sectional analytical study evaluated whether clinical indicators of occlusal forces are associated with the prevalence of interproximal caries in posterior teeth. A total of 403 posterior teeth from 109 patients (12-70 years) attending Mashhad Dental School were examined. Dental facets, non carious cervical lesions, occlusion type, and contact position were recorded as clinical indicators of occlusal forces, and interproximal caries was assessed clinically and radiographically using ICDAS II criteria. Caries risk status was determined using the CAMBRA system. The association between

BACKGROUND: Additive manufacturing technologies have introduced new nanohybrid resin composites for permanent indirect restorations. However, limited evidence exists regarding the mechanical performance of 3D-printed restorations in managing occlusal wear. This study evaluated the effect of preparation design on fracture resistance, preparation time, and failure modes of 3D-printed restorations. METHODS: Forty maxillary premolars were allocated to four groups (n = 10): sound teeth (ST), overlay (OV), veneerlay (VL), and full crown (FC). Experimental groups received standardized 1.0–1.2 mm occl

Different diluents are used to prepare toothpaste slurries in vitro and in situ erosive tooth wear studies. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of diluents on the anti-erosive potential of toothpastes with different active agents. Bovine enamel specimens were assigned to groups (n = 12) according to slurry type (in vitro deionized water, in vitro remineralizing solution, clarified human saliva, or in situ human saliva) and toothpaste formulation: placebo (0 ppm F), sodium monofluorophosphate (1450 ppm F - MFP), sodium fluoride (1450 ppm F - NaF), stannous fluoride + sodium fluoride (110

This review of human tooth wear describes the fundamental mechanisms underlying this process. Using the tribological approach they can be systematised and this in turn aids our understanding of them. In past populations wear was ubiquitous, intense, abrasive and physiological as it was related to their food and their technologies. In these populations, it affected the proximal surfaces, and the occlusal surfaces which modified the occlusal plane profoundly. To categorise this wear many different classification systems are used, from which we can determine diet, cultural changes and the age at

BACKGROUND: Cervical dentine wear is commonly observed and may be associated with dentine hypersensitivity. Erosion is thought to play a part in both conditions but compared to enamel has been little studied in dentine.
AIM: The aims of these studies in vitro were to: (i) determine the effects of citric acid on dentine at different pH values and over time; (ii) measure the depth of dentine demineralisation or softening using ultrasonication; (iii) determine whether softened dentine can be remineralised or rehardened using artificial saliva.
METHODS: Groups of flat dentine specimens prepared

OBJECTIVES: While the etiology of tooth wear is known to be multifactorial, data regarding the interaction between psychological profile, salivary dynamics, and clinical wear severity remain insufficiently elucidated. This study aimed to analyze the effects of psychological profile and salivary parameters-alongside demographic data, medical history, oral hygiene habits, and dietary patterns-on the severity of clinical tooth wear in a multivariable framework.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Following institutional ethical approval and informed consent, this cross-sectional study included 101 volunteers

OBJECTIVES: The relationship between severe tooth wear and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) remains unclear in literature. The objective of this study was to retrospectively investigate the relationship between severe tooth wear and TMD by using the method of propensity score matching (PSM). METHODS: 1911 TMD patients were enrolled in the study. After tooth wear index (TWI) assessment screening, 1557 TMD patients were divided into the severe tooth wear group (case group) and the mild tooth wear group (control group). Then propensity score-matching (PSM), Chi-square tests and logistic regressi

BACKGROUND: Elongated third molars have been associated with occlusal interference, mandibular deviation, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. However, their impact on TMJ space morphology and posterior tooth wear remains insufficiently explored.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the relationship between unilateral third molar elongation, TMJ space asymmetry, and asymmetrical posterior tooth wear.
METHODS: Thirty patients presenting with unilateral third molar elongation (experimental group) and 30 controls with fully aligned dentition and absent third molars were included (Ethic

BACKGROUND: In addition to behavioral and biochemical abnormalities, a parafunction associated with temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) resulted in stress-induced depression in rats. Exploring how chronic stress influences molar wear in rodents provides insights into the understanding of depression, TMD, and oral health. This study aimed to conduct a three-dimensional (3D) analysis of first molar wear in an animal model of depression by comparing molar attrition and cusp variation between stressed male rats and control groups.
METHODS: After obtaining a validated model of depression in m

BACKGROUND: Tooth brushing is a universal recommendation. However, the recommendations related to the time of its execution are conflicting, especially when dealing with patients at risk of erosive tooth wear (ETW) or dental caries.
SUMMARY: Our objective was to summarize the evidence on the timing of brushing with fluoridated toothpaste in relation to ETW and cariogenic dietary challenges. We conducted a scoping review following the PRISMA-ScR checklist, using three databases searching for in vivo, in situ, or in vitro studies involving human teeth exposed to either a cariogenic or an erosiv

Dental diseases are among the most important reasons for presenting guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) and other rodents to veterinary clinics, but the aetiopathology of this disease complex is unclear. Clinicians tend to believe that the ever-growing teeth of rabbits and rodents have a constant growth that needs to be worn down by the mastication of an appropriate diet. In this study, we tested the effect of four different pelleted diets of increasing abrasiveness [due to both internal (phytoliths) and external abrasives (sand)] or whole grass hay fed for 2 weeks each in random order to 16 guinea

Rehabilitation of posterior erosive tooth wear can be especially challenging in the presence of substantial tooth structure loss and limited inter-occlusal space. This article describes two case reports illustrating a conservative approach using the one-step Dahl approach in the management of localized posterior erosive tooth wear. The occlusal surfaces of worn teeth in both cases were successfully restored using direct composite resin and gold onlay, respectively. The material was placed in supra-occlusion during the initial stage. This technique enables intrusion of affected worn teeth and t
