This report documents the death of two fat-tailed dwarf lemurs (Cheirogaleus medius) maintained over 6 years each in our laboratory. Postmortem studies revealed xanthogranuloma of the choroid plexus, a mass replete with stored lipids, including cholesterol crystals. Six months prior to their deaths, both animals developed a peculiar head tilt and signs suggestive of neurological dysfunction. At autopsy, each had masses projecting into the lateral and IVth ventricles and an associated obstructive hydrocephalus. Cryostat sections of the brains of both lemurs showed histological features consiste

A 39 years old male patient with a 72 hours evolution of acute abdominal syndrome was submitted to appendicectomy. Fourteen days later he developed headache, vomiting, aphasia, torpor, nuchal stiffness and right hemiplegia. A CT-scan showed multiple brain abscesses on both hemispheres. After aspirative puncture of the largest one, antibiotic treatment was established with total recovery of the patient.

Stroke continues to be a leading cause of death and long-term neurological disability globally, with current treatment options limited by narrow time windows and insufficient neuroprotective strategies. Over recent decades, research into effective neuroprotective interventions has advanced significantly, shifting from single-target approaches like excitotoxicity modulation to recognizing the diverse protective potential of therapeutic hypothermia (TH). This review summarizes recent advances in TH research, emphasizing its neuroprotective effects through reducing cerebral metabolism, maintainin

Hibernating 13-lined ground squirrels are characterized by tolerance of severe hypothermia and hypoperfusion during torpor, followed by periodic warm reperfusion during IBA, conditions which are lethal to nonhibernating mammals. The aim of the present study was to determine whether protection from apoptosis was specific to torpor arousal cycles during hibernation or will also apply to cisplatin treatment on squirrel renal tubular cells (RTECs) that were procured during hibernation. Squirrel and mouse RTECs were treated with cisplatin, a potent inducer of RTEC apoptosis. Squirrel RTECs subjecte

Muscle wasting is common in mammals during extended periods of immobility. However, many small hibernating mammals manage to avoid muscle atrophy despite remaining stationary for long periods during hibernation. Recent research has highlighted roles for short non-coding microRNAs (miRNAs) in the regulation of stress tolerance. We proposed that they could also play an important role in muscle maintenance during hibernation. To explore this possibility, a group of 10 miRNAs known to be normally expressed in skeletal muscle of non-hibernating mammals were analyzed by RT-PCR in hibernating little

OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to determine the effect of fasting on reproducibility of the glucose tolerance test. Due to individual variation in animal feeding behaviors, fasting animals prior to metabolic and behavioral experiments is widely held to reduce inter-subject variation in glucose and metabolic parameters of preclinical rodent models. Reducing variability is especially important for studies where initial metabolite levels can influence the magnitude of experimental interventions, but fasting also imposes stress that may distort the variables of interest. One such intervention

The subterranean niche is a specialised and particularly challenging environment to obtain direct physiological and behavioural measurements from free-living animals. Rhythmicity has been examined in many mole-rat species in the laboratory, but field reports are relatively scarce. We implanted Natal mole-rats with temperature loggers in summer and winter to record core body temperature (Tb), before releasing the animals again. Animals were recaptured after two months to recover the loggers. Natal mole-rats can maintain rhythmicity of their Tb in their natural habitat and display seasonal diffe

Long-term spaceflight induces multisystem stress, including cardiovascular deconditioning, skeletal muscle atrophy, immune suppression, and neuro-ocular syndromes. Current countermeasures reduce symptoms but cannot replicate the synergistic resilience needed for extended missions or critical illness. Hibernating animals, specifically brown bears (Ursus arctos), survive prolonged immobility, starvation, and bradycardia without resultant pathology. This review incorporates adaptations observed in bears and certain torpid species, including reversible insulin resistance, suppression of muscle atr

Prolonged skeletal muscle disuse, such as extended inactivity and mechanical unloading, typically elicits severe muscle atrophy and progressive bone loss, yet hibernating mammals evade this pathological cascade via poorly defined adaptive mechanisms. Using the Daurian ground squirrel (Spermophilus dauricus) as a unique natural model of prolonged torpor, we demonstrate that skeletal muscle-derived small extracellular vesicles (Mu-EVs) orchestrate protective muscle-bone crosstalk to maintain bone homeostasis during extended disuse. Morphological and microstructural analyses revealed no significa

The 13-lined ground squirrel (Ictidomys tridecemlineatus), a hibernating species, is a natural model of physiological adoption to an extreme environment. During torpor, body temperature drops to 0-4 degrees C, and the cortex is electrically silent, yet the brain stem continues to regulate cardiorespiratory function. The mechanisms underlying selective inhibition in the brain during torpor are not known. To test whether altered GABAergic function is involved in regional and seasonal differences in neuronal activity, cortical and medullary slices from summer-active (SA) and interbout aroused (IB

Increasing temperatures and water scarcity pose threats to animals living in the wild and humans. Here, we review biological mechanisms animals use to prevent dehydration. Fat and glycogen generate water during metabolism that can be used by many animals as a source of water. In hibernating animals, fat production is stimulated in the autumn by a vasopressin-dependent, carbohydrate-based metabolism that leads to thirst, increased water intake, and storage of glycogen and fat. As fall advances, the animals switch to fat-based metabolism with falling vasopressin levels, and actual entrance into

Hibernation enables animals survive harsh environments by conserving energy through reduced metabolism and body temperature. Brown adipose tissue (BAT) plays a critical role in non-shivering thermogenesis, crucial for warming up during arousal phase. The greater horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus nippon) are typical hibernators and non-shivering thermogenesis in BAT tissue may persist throughout the arousal process in bats. This study examines gene expression and regulatory changes in BAT of these bats across active, hibernation, and arousal phases using transcriptome and miRNA sequencing. A total of

Hibernation is a specialized adaptive energy-saving survival strategy evolved by animals to withstand winter cold stress and food scarcity. Its core feature lies in profound metabolic suppression, characterized by a drastic reduction in metabolic rate during hibernation, accompanied by the coordinated downregulation of multiple physiological functions such as body temperature, heart rate, and respiratory rate. The establishment and maintenance of this deep metabolic suppression state essentially rely on the systemic reprogramming of energy metabolism, which serves as the core driving force of

Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd), the causative agent of white-nose syndrome in North America, has decimated bat populations within a decade. The fungus impacts bats during hibernation when physiological functions, including immune responses, are down-regulated. Studies have shown that Pd is native to Europe, where it is not associated with mass mortalities. Moreover, genomic and proteomic studies indicated that European bats may have evolved an effective immune defence, which is lacking in North American bats. However, it is still unclear which defence strategy enables European bats to cope

Hibernating mammals are natural models of resistance to ischemia, hypoxia-reperfusion injury, and hypothermia. Daurian ground squirrels (spermophilus dauricus) can adapt to endure multiple torpor-arousal cycles without sustaining cardiac damage. However, the molecular regulatory mechanisms that underlie this adaptive response are not yet fully understood. This study investigates morphological, functional, genetic, and metabolic changes that occur in the heart of ground squirrels in three groups: summer active (SA), late torpor (LT), and interbout arousal (IBA). Morphological and functional cha

Though an adequate volume of ethanol relieves nervousness and enhances sexual desire, acute administration of a great deal of ethanol suppresses central nervous system and causes sensory torpor and penile erectile dysfunction. Long term and excessive intake of ethanol causes central and/or peripheral neuropathy and sexual dysfunction; atrophy of testicles, low serum level of testosterone, impaired spermatogenesis and penile erectile dysfunction. It also invades various organs in digestive tract, cardiovascular system, central and peripheral nervous system and causes functional disorders in the

Pelodiscus sinensis (P. sinensis) is a commonly cultivated turtle species with a habit of hibernation. To study the changes in histone expression and methylation of P. sinensis during hibernation induction, a model was established by artificial induction. Physiological and metabolic indices were measured, and the expression and localization of histone (H1, H2A, H2B, H3, and H4) and methylation-related genes (ASH2L, KMT2A, KMT2E, KDM1A, KDM1B, and KDM5A) were measured by quantitative PCR, immunohistochemistry, and Western blot analysis. The results indicated that the metabolism, antioxidation i

Trauma Disorders - A Relevant Health Problem Abstract. In medical practice traumatic stress disorders are underdiagnosed. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) must be considered in case of pronounced need for control, severe anxiety and restlessness, jumpiness, mental torpor, dissociative disorders, social withdrawal, distrust or vegetative over-arousal. Simple screening instruments such as the "Primary Care PTSD Screen" are suitable for an initial assessment. As long as symptoms are not serious and long-lasting and there are no risk factors for the development of severe PTSD, it is a matter

In a wide range of heterothermic mammals, hibernation interrupts the reproductive cycle by forcing reproductive delays. In hibernating bats with delayed fertilization, an opportunity for sperm competition is enhanced by extending a time-window between copulations and fertilization. In order to achieve greater fertilization success, males are expected to show adaptations for sperm competition by increasing their opportunities for mating over an extended period. We aimed to clarify the physiological and behavioral characteristics of male bats experiencing increased risks of sperm competition. We

Hibernation, a period where bats have suppressed immunity and low body temperatures, provides the psychrophilic fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans the opportunity to colonise bat skin, leading to severe disease in susceptible species. Innate immunity, which requires less energy and may remain more active during torpor, can control infections with local inflammation in some bat species that are resistant to infection. If infection is not controlled before emergence from hibernation, ineffective adaptive immune mechanisms are activated, including incomplete Th1, ineffective Th2, and variable Th
