Touched by homelessness: an examination of hospitality for the down and out.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated patterns of "doubled-up" homelessness using an indirect measure based on host households. METHODS: In random household telephone surveys conducted in Alabama between 1990 and 2000 and nationally in 1997, respondents indicated whether any individual had stayed with them during the past year because that person was homeless. RESULTS: The percentage of Alabama households providing shelter during the past year declined from 16.2% in 1990 to 7.1% in 2000. The national rate for providing shelter in 1997 was 18.0%. CONCLUSIONS: Many households provide shelter to

Therapeutic touch in the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Alternative medical therapies are widely utilized, but there are few objective data to evaluate the effectiveness of these techniques. The purpose of this study was to determine whether one alternative therapy, Therapeutic Touch (TT), can improve objective indices of median nerve function in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. METHODS: Participants with electrodiagnostically confirmed carpal tunnel syndrome were randomly assigned in single-blind fashion to receive either TT or sham therapeutic touch once weekly for 6 consecutive weeks. The distal latency of the median motor nerv

Minimal trauma cholecystectomy (a "no-touch" procedure in a "well").

Salient features of an operative technique designed to reduce to a minimum the iatrogenic trauma of cholecystectomy include a limited incision, muscle retraction (instead of division), specific packing and retraction, and distant manipulations by long instruments. Eighty two unselected consecutive patients with primary gallbladder disease underwent operation by this technique. Two permanently bed-confined patients were excluded from study. Acute cholecystitis was documented by histopathology review in 23 cases and chronic cholecystitis in 57 cases. Case material included usual pre-existing con

Direct and transcallosal induction of touch memories in the monkey.

A monkey, after corpus callosum transection, will fail to recall through one hand tactual tasks that he has learned through the other hand. However, if a monkey has already learned a task through one hand, destruction of the corpus callosum does not greatly affect his subsequent recall of that task through the other hand. It is concluded that task learning through one hand develops separate memory trace systems in both hemispheres.

Facial disgust in response to touches, smells, and tastes.

Disgust serves to defend the body from the entry of toxins and disease. Central to this function is a strong relationship with the proximate senses of smell, taste, and touch. Theory suggests that distinct and reflexive facial movements should be evoked by gustatory and olfactory disgusts, serving to impede bodily entry. While this hypothesis has received some support from facial recognition studies, whether smell and taste disgusts actually produce distinct facial responses, is unknown. Moreover, there has been no assessment of the facial response evoked by contact with disgusting objects. To

On the mechanics of monofilaments used in touch sensory perception.

The buckling of a slender monofilament is a standard clinical method used to assess touch sensory perception, with specific applications to somatosensory impairment in patients after a stroke, detecting carpal tunnel syndrome, and as a prognosis tool for diabetic peripheral neuropathy. The basis of this approach is the Semmes-Weinstein monofilament, which comprises a calibrated set of thin, polycarbonate rods with different diameters. Application of a monofilament onto the surface of the skin with increasing pressure causes the rod to buckle. That is, at a specific force of pushing down on the

Interactions of Whisking and Touch Signals in the Rat Brainstem.

Perception is an active process, requiring the integration of both proprioceptive and exteroceptive information. In the rat's vibrissal system, a classical model for active sensing, the relative contribution of the two information streams was previously studied at the peripheral, thalamic, and cortical levels. Contributions of brainstem neurons were only indirectly inferred for some trigeminal nuclei according to their thalamic projections. The current work addressed this knowledge gap by performing the first comparative study of the encoding of proprioceptive whisking and exteroceptive touch

Touch as an auxiliary proprioceptive cue for movement control.

Recent studies extended the classical view that touch is mainly devoted to the perception of the external world. Perceptual tasks where the hand was stationary demonstrated that cutaneous stimuli from contact with objects provide the illusion of hand displacement. Here, we tested the hypothesis that touch provides auxiliary proprioceptive feedback for guiding actions. We used a well-established perceptual phenomenon to dissociate the estimates of reaching direction from touch and musculoskeletal proprioception. Participants slid their fingertip on a ridged plate to move toward a target without

Family-Centered Culture Care: Touched by an Angel.

An Asian Indian Hindu family chose no intervention and hospice care for their newborn with hypoplastic right heart syndrome as an ethical option, and the newborn expired after five days. Professional nursing integrates values-based practice and evidence-based care with cultural humility when providing culturally responsive family-centered culture care. Each person's worldview is unique as influenced by culture, language, and religion, among other factors. The Nursing Team sought to understand this family's collective Indian Hindu worldview and end-of-life beliefs, values, and practices, in vie

Transfer of attunement in length perception by dynamic touch.

Earlier studies have revealed that the calibration of an action sometimes transfers in a functionally specific way-the calibration of one action transfers to other actions that serve the same goal, even when they are performed with different anatomical structures. In the present study, we tested whether attunement (the process by which perceivers learn to detect a more useful, specifying, informational pattern) follows such a functional organization. Participants were trained to perceive the length of rods by dynamic touch with one of their effectors. It was found that training the right hand

Touch sensitivity of the eyelid margin and palpebral conjunctiva.

Using a slit-lamp biomicroscope mounted Cochet-Bonnet aesthesiometer, the touch sensitivity of the eyelid margin and palpebral conjunctiva was determined for both upper and lower lids in 30 subjects. Thresholds for the occlusal surface of the lid, the marginal angle and the middle of the tarsus were measured centrally. A significantly higher touch sensitivity was found for the marginal zone compared with the occlusal surface, and tarsal conjunctival sensitivity was substantially the lowest. The occlusal and marginal zones of the lower lid displayed a significantly higher touch sensitivity than

Sensitivity of touch corpuscles in vitamin A-deficient rats.

Fifty percent of a population of thirty weanling rats were fed a vitamin A-deficient diet. The remaining 50% were fed a control diet. In comparison with the control group, the rate of growth started to slow down in the vitamin A-deficient animals around day 33. Single unit recordings were made from sensory nerve fibres supplying slowly adapting type I cutaneous mechanoreceptors (touch corpuscles). Touch corpuscles were stimulated repetitively with low force mechanical stimuli. Receptors in vitamin A-deficient animals showed clearly reduced nervous responses compared with receptors in control a

The power of touch: How can social touch impact the trust, body representation and exercise performance of patients in a wearable physiotherapy assistant?

BACKGROUND: Given the high prevalence of low back pain and its financial weight on the healthcare system, practicing physiotherapy exercises is crucial for sustainable therapy success. Effective rehabilitation requires high-quality movement execution, demanding technology that provides optimal feedback. OBJECTIVE: Our interdisciplinary approach, combining neuroscientific insights on body representation, sports science findings on motor learning, and user experience research on feedback perception aims to give a multifaceted insight into the different effects that varied feedback modalities (a

When in Doubt, Touch Is More Convincing Than Vision.

We sometimes feel compelled to touch objects after having looked at them. Is this because touch gives us more accurate information, or is it simply because we tend to trust what we feel more than what we see? To disentangle these possibilities, participants were subjected to a variant of the 'Vertical-Horizontal' illusion where the length of a vertical bar is consistently overestimated relative to the length of a horizontal bar. Our variant focuses on points of subjective equality where the bars almost look the same, and possesses two key characteristics: it creates ambiguity as stimuli can be

Fabricating synthetic, small-diameter vascular templates via touch-spinning.

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death worldwide, highlighting the critical need for effective treatment options. Current commercially available grafts for coronary bypass procedures exhibit high failure rates due to mechanical mismatch with native blood vessels. This study investigated the use of touch-spinning to fabricate vascular templates that exhibit similar architecture and mechanical properties to native blood vessels. Polydioxanone (PDO) and PDO/collagen I templates were fabricated in a crosshatch pattern at 25° and 40° along the longitudinal axis. The templates wer

Deficits in childhood affective touch linked to borderline personality.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is linked to early relational experiences, yet the developmental impact of affective touch in childhood remains understudied. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated whether childhood and adolescent affective touch (CATE) predicts BPD symptoms through parallel mediation by interpersonal emotion regulation (ER), reinforcement sensitivity (BAS Drive and Reward Responsiveness), and serial mediation by psychological need satisfaction (PNS) and frustration (PNF). METHOD: An internationally diverse sample of 243 adults (155 females, 59 males, and 29 non

Touch Helps Hearing: Evidence From Continuous Audio-Tactile Stimulation.

OBJECTIVES: Identifying target sounds in challenging environments is crucial for daily experiences. It is important to note that it can be enhanced by nonauditory stimuli, for example, through lip-reading in an ongoing conversation. However, how tactile stimuli affect auditory processing is still relatively unclear. Recent studies have shown that brief tactile stimuli can reliably facilitate auditory perception, while studies using longer-lasting audio-tactile stimulation yielded conflicting results. This study aimed to investigate the impact of ongoing pulsating tactile stimulation on basic a

Touch, press and stroke: a soft capacitive sensor skin.

Soft sensors that can discriminate shear and normal force could help provide machines the fine control desirable for safe and effective physical interactions with people. A capacitive sensor is made for this purpose, composed of patterned elastomer and containing both fixed and sliding pillars that allow the sensor to deform and buckle, much like skin itself. The sensor differentiates between simultaneously applied normal force and shear using summation and differences of signals from four deformable capacitors. Cross talk from shear to normal force is less than 2.5%, and between shear axes is
