Spatial perspective-taking abilities on ambiguous tactile stimuli: The case of children with autism spectrum disorder or developmental coordination disorder.

Spatial perspective-taking corresponds to the ability to adopt someone else's point of view. Abnormalities in visual perspective-taking have been reported in neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), such as Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and developmental coordination disorder (DCD), which are highly comorbid conditions. This study explored the developmental aspects of perspective-taking in the tactile modality in typically developing children and children with NDD. A total of 107 children, aged between 6 and 17 years, completed the study: 74 were typically developing (TD) and 33 had a neurodevelo

Visuotactile object processing in binocular rivalry: The role of shape congruence, voluntary action, and spatial colocalization.

Multisensory information can help resolve perceptual ambiguity in situations such as the alternating visual experience during binocular rivalry. Across four experiments, participants viewed dichoptically presented spiky and round rival targets while simultaneously touching spiky, neutral, or round shapes in three-dimensional (3D) printed form. The primary aim was to investigate the influence of visuotactile shape congruence in the curvature dimension. In addition, the roles of voluntary action and spatial colocalization on successful crossmodal integration were investigated. Voluntary action w

Self-training of dynamic touch: striking improves judgment by wielding.

In traditional theories of perceptual learning, sensory modalities support one another. A good example comes from research on dynamic touch, the wielding of an unseen object to perceive its properties. Wielding provides the haptic system with mechanical information related to the length of the object. Visual feedback can improve the accuracy of subsequent length judgments; visual perception supports haptic perception. Such cross-modal support is not the only route to perceptual learning. We present a dynamic touch task in which we replaced visual feedback with the instruction to strike the uns

Neural encoding of actual and imagined touch within human posterior parietal cortex.

In the human posterior parietal cortex (PPC), single units encode high-dimensional information with partially mixed representations that enable small populations of neurons to encode many variables relevant to movement planning, execution, cognition, and perception. Here, we test whether a PPC neuronal population previously demonstrated to encode visual and motor information is similarly engaged in the somatosensory domain. We recorded neurons within the PPC of a human clinical trial participant during actual touch presentation and during a tactile imagery task. Neurons encoded actual touch at

Body distortions in Anorexia Nervosa: Evidence for changed processing of multisensory bodily signals.

Body size and shape distortion is a core feature of Anorexia Nervosa (AN) - patients experience their body as fat while objectively being very thin. The cause of this distortion is unclear and disturbances in body perception could be involved. Body perception comprises estimating shape and location of one's body and requires integrating multisensory signals. We investigated if and how body location perception is changed and tested 23 AN patients and 23 healthy controls (HC) in a Rubber Hand Illusion (RHI) reaching paradigm. We presented two types of multisensory conflicts (visual-proprioceptiv

Perception of Scenes in Different Sensory Modalities: A Result of Modal Completion.

Dynamic perception includes amodal and modal completion, along with apparent movement. It fills temporal gaps for single objects. In 2 experiments, using 6 stimulus presentation conditions involving 3 sensory modalities, participants experienced 8-10 sequential stimuli (200 ms each) with interstimulus intervals (ISIs) of 0.25-7.0 s. Experiments focused on spatiotemporal completion (walking), featural completion (object changing), auditory, completion (falling bomb), and haptic changes (insect crawling). After each trial, participants judged whether they experienced the process of "happening "

Motor Prediction Reduces Beta-Band Power and Enhances Cerebellar-Somatosensory Connectivity before Self-Touch to Enable Its Attenuation.

Motor control theories suggest that the brain uses forward models to predict self-generated tactile input during voluntary movements, thereby reducing the intensity of reafferent tactile sensations. When one's own body is the target, this phenomenon is called self-touch attenuation. Although self-touch attenuation is well documented, it remains unclear how prediction-related neural mechanisms drive attenuation before the self-touch input. We used magnetoencephalography to examine the neural correlates of self-touch prediction. Twenty-four human participants (12 females, 12 males) performed a s

An elasticity-curvature illusion decouples cutaneous and proprioceptive cues in active exploration of soft objects.

Our sense of touch helps us encounter the richness of our natural world. Across a myriad of contexts and repetitions, we have learned to deploy certain exploratory movements in order to elicit perceptual cues that are salient and efficient. The task of identifying optimal exploration strategies and somatosensory cues that underlie our softness perception remains relevant and incomplete. Leveraging psychophysical evaluations combined with computational finite element modeling of skin contact mechanics, we investigate an illusion phenomenon in exploring softness; where small-compliant and large-

From Sight to Touch: Haptic Sensory Integration Can Facilitate Multi-Limb Coordination.

Humans possess an innate ability to seamlessly coordinate movement across multiple limbs, whether driving a motor vehicle, playing a musical instrument, or performing other daily tasks. Here, supplemental sensory information, such as haptic feedback, can enhance this coordination in applications ranging from controlling teleoperated robots to prosthetic limbs and collaborative robotics. Yet, a critical gap remains in our understanding of how visual and haptic information are integrated within sensorimotor feedback systems, as well as the extent to which these sensory channels may serve as subs

The effect of vibrotactile feedback on performance, perception and trust when balancing in different analog g-levels.

We studied orientation-dependent vibrotactile feedback (VF) as a countermeasure to spatial disorientation (SD) in spaceflight analog environments. In Experiment 1, participants balanced themselves in a dynamic motion simulator in Earth (1-g), Martian (0.38-g), Lunar (0.166-g) and 0-g analog conditions. One group (n = 13) had VF and the Control group (n = 13) did not. As g-level decreased, attitude control and subjective confusion worsened, for both groups. An exponential model fit both groups. The Control group became significantly worse than its 1-g baseline at 0.61 to 0.23-g. Based on these

Optimizing Vibrotactile Feedback for Sensory Substitution in the Thigh: Spatial Acuity and Frequency Characteristics.

Amputation of a lower limb not only affects mobility but also interferes with sensory feedback, leading to an elevated risk of falls among individuals living with amputation. Sensory substitution, achieved through tactile displays embedded in transfemoral prosthetic sockets, presents a promising non-invasive solution to provide artificial sensation to users. However, for this approach to be effective, users must accurately perceive distinct combinations of vibrations, a capacity limited by their two-point discrimination ability. This study examined whether spacing two vibrotactile stimuli with

Neural correlates of temporal recalibration to delayed auditory feedback of active and passive movements.

When we perform an action, its sensory outcomes usually follow shortly after. This characteristic temporal relationship aids in distinguishing self- from externally generated sensory input. To preserve this ability under dynamically changing environmental conditions, our expectation of the timing between action and outcome must be able to recalibrate, for example, when the outcome is consistently delayed. Until now, it remains unclear whether this process, known as sensorimotor temporal recalibration, can be specifically attributed to recalibration of sensorimotor (action-outcome) predictions,

The aim of the present survey was to review scientific articles dealing with the non-visual (auditory and tactile) forms of neglect to determine: (a) whether behavioural patterns similar to those observed in the visual modality can also be observed in the non-visual modalities; (b) whether a different severity of neglect can be found in the visual and in the auditory and tactile modalities; (c) the reasons for the possible differences between the visual and non-visual modalities. On the impact of tactile processing on motor cortex: how touch shapes motor behaviour.

The ability to manipulate objects is a fundamental human skill that relies primarily on the motor system. However, effective object manipulation would not be possible without the continuous information provided by the somatosensory system. Cutaneous tactile feedback is particularly important when a movement must be adjusted while performing an action. Efficient interactions between the tactile and motor systems are therefore paramount for fine motor behaviour, as clearly demonstrated by the profound impairments observed following lesions to sensorimotor brain regions. However, somatosensory de

Normal force in natural active touch correlates with fingertip stiffness.

Through tactile sensations, we perceive the mechanical interactions between our body and the external world, which enable us to explore its physical properties such as shape, texture, hardness, and temperature. When we casually touch objects, we perceive their textures even without performing any specific task. Individuals employ different strategies when exploring an object with or without an explicit task. This study examined individual differences in baseline motion patterns. Skin characteristics significantly influence tactile perception and friction coefficients. Thus, it can be inferred

To touch or to be touched? comparing appraisal of vicarious execution and reception of interpersonal touch.

Unmyelinated C-Tactile (CT) fibres are activated by caress-like touch, eliciting a pleasant feeling that decreases for static and faster stroking. Previous studies documented this effect also for vicarious touch, hypothesising simulation mechanisms driving the perception and appreciation of observed interpersonal touch. Notably, less is known about appreciation of vicarious execution of touch, that is as referred to the one giving gentle touch. To address this issue, 53 healthy participants were asked to view and rate a series of videoclips displaying an individual being touched by another on

Brief Temporal Perturbations in Somatosensory Reafference Disrupt Perceptual and Neural Attenuation and Increase Supplementary Motor Area-Cerebellar Connectivity.

Intrinsic delays in sensory feedback can be detrimental for motor control. As a compensation strategy, the brain predicts the sensory consequences of movement via a forward model on the basis of a copy of the motor command. Using these predictions, the brain attenuates somatosensory reafference to facilitate the processing of exafferent information. Theoretically, this predictive attenuation is disrupted by (even minimal) temporal errors between the predicted and actual reafference; however, direct evidence of such disruption is lacking as previous neuroimaging studies contrasted nondelayed re

Microstimulation of sensory cortex engages natural sensory representations.

Cortical activity patterns occupy a small subset of possible network states. If this is due to intrinsic network properties, microstimulation of sensory cortex should evoke activity patterns resembling those observed during natural sensory input. Here, we use optical microstimulation of virally transfected layer 2/3 pyramidal neurons in the mouse primary vibrissal somatosensory cortex to compare artificially evoked activity with natural activity evoked by whisker touch and movement ("whisking"). We find that photostimulation engages touch- but not whisking-responsive neurons more than expected

Hierarchical unimodal processing within the primary somatosensory cortex during a bimodal detection task.

Do sensory cortices process more than one sensory modality? To answer these questions, scientists have generated a wide variety of studies at distinct space-time scales in different animal models, and often shown contradictory conclusions. Some conclude that this process occurs in early sensory cortices, but others that this occurs in areas central to sensory cortices. Here, we sought to determine whether sensory neurons process and encode physical stimulus properties of different modalities (tactile and acoustic). For this, we designed a bimodal detection task where the senses of touch and he

A psychophysical and neuroimaging analysis of genital hedonic sensation in men.

Current understanding of human genital-brain interactions relates primarily to neuroendocrine and autonomic control, whereas interactions during sexual stimulation remain largely unexplored. Here we present a systematic approach towards identifying how the human brain encodes sensory genital information. Using a validated affective touch paradigm and functional magnetic resonance imaging, we found that hedonic responses to discriminatory versus affective tactile stimulation were distinctly different for both penile shaft and forearm. This suggests that, as with other body sites, genital skin c
