Elective tracheotomy facilitates total artificial heart implantation in calves.

Chronic ventilatory support may be required for survival after total artificial heart (TAH) implantation in calves. However, prolonged or repeated intubation may negatively affect a calf's ability to eat, drink, ruminate, and stand after surgery. To mitigate these limitations, we performed tracheotomies on 23 consecutive calves at the time of TAH implantation. The tracheostomies served as the primary route for ventilatory support and airway management. Tracheostomies were left in place for up to 25 days (mean, 7 +/- 7 days) and were well tolerated. Prolonged presence of a tracheostomy facilita

Tracheal incision for elective tracheotomy in oral cavity cancer.

The aim of this prospective study was to compare operative procedure and postoperative complications between horizontal tracheal incision and window-type tracheal excision for elective tracheotomy in patients with oral cavity cancer. Between February 2003 and April 2004, 40 patients with advanced-stage oral cavity cancer were consecutively seen at our tumor clinic. All patients underwent elective tracheotomy before wide excision of the tumor and free flap reconstruction. Either horizontal tracheal incision (H group) or window-type tracheal excision (W group) was randomly carried out in two gro

[Problems of tracheotomy in locally invasive anaplastic thyroid cancer].

Between 1955-1985 515 patients with carcinoma of the thyroid have been operated. Among 170 cases with a local infiltration 69 tracheostomies were performed in 55% for lesions of both laryngeal nerves or intratracheal bleeding (absolute indication), in 45% as a prophylactic intraoperative procedure to avoid later death from asphyxiation (relative indication). In a retrospective study clinical results were analysed with special reference to the question whether patients profit by the tracheostomy. Follow-up examinations showed that tracheostomy did not influence the outcome of patients with a di

Factors Influencing Time-to-OR for Urgent Tracheotomy: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVE: To identify factors influencing time-to-operating room and time-to-airway intervention in urgent tracheotomy and synthesize strategies to reduce delays in airway emergencies. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted following the Joanna Briggs Institute framework and reported according to PRISMA-ScR guidelines. MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were searched from inception to June 2024. Eligible studies involved adults (≥18 years) undergoing urgent tracheotomy for airway obstruction due to malignancy or infection. Trauma, angioedema, laryngotracheal stenosi

Anesthetic and surgical management of tracheotomy in a patient with Kennedy's Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Kennedy's disease (KD) is a rare X-linked recessive motor-neuron neuropathy also known as Spinal and Bulbar Muscular Atrophy (SBMA). CASE REPORT: We report a case of Kennedy's disease (KD) with acute laryngeal stridor and dysphagia whose anesthesiologic management required a tracheotomy. The surgical procedure was conducted under local anesthesia performed by ultrasound-guided superior laryngeal nerve block and superficial cervical plexus block using 2% lidocaine. The surgical procedure was well tolerated without any discomfort reported from the patient. CONCLUSIONS: In KD loca

Management of a Patient With Tracheal Stenosis After Previous Tracheotomy.

Tracheal stenosis after tracheotomy can cause difficult airway management and respiratory complications. It is difficult to predict tracheal stenosis after tracheotomy based on a patient's symptoms as the symptoms of tracheal stenosis appear only after they become severe. In patients with a history of previous tracheotomy, it is important to consider the risk factors for tracheal stenosis. Detailed preoperative evaluation of patients with a history of previous tracheotomy is essential and should include 3-dimensional assessment of the airway. We report the preoperative assessment and periopera

Comparison of intubation and tracheotomy in patients with deep neck infection.

Possible airway compromise further complicates treatment of deep neck infections (DNI). Airway management is crucial, but factors affecting the method of choice are unclear. We retrospectively evaluated adult DNIs in a single tertiary center covering 10 years, with special attention on airway management. Patient data were retrieved from electronic data files from 2007 to 2016, and included adult patients with DNI operated through the neck. Of the 202 patients, 127 (63%) were male, with a median age of 47 years. Odontogenic (n = 74; 35%) infection was the most common etiology. Intubation was th

Pycnodysostosis with extreme sleep apnea: a possible alternative to tracheotomy.

PURPOSE: Pycnodysostosis (OMIM:265800) is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder due to a mutation in the cathepsin K gene, which causes a decrease of the bone turnover and a deterioration of the bone structure. Our aim was to describe a 5 year-old patient affected by pycnodysostosis, associated with an extremely severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, who was treated effectively with a combination of upper airway surgery and positive pressure ventilation. METHODS: A 5 year-old child affected by pycnodysostosis was referred to us for failure to thrive, facial dysmorphisms and respiratory di

Thrombi in the trachea of a dog secondary to placement of a tracheotomy tube.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 7-year-old Spaniel-crossbreed dog was evaluated for stertorous breathing and inspiratory stridor. CLINICAL FINDINGS: A temporary tracheotomy tube was placed prior to referral. Results of physical examination at our facility, including thoracic auscultation, were unremarkable. Examination of the larynx revealed a 2 x 2-cm nodular mass on the lateral aspect of the epiglottis and left arytenoid cartilage. Cytologic examination of the mass indicated septic suppurative inflammation and intracellular rod-shaped bacteria. During the procedures, decreased air movement through the

Surgical complications of bedside tracheotomy in an otolaryngology residency program.

A prospective analysis of 124 consecutive adult patients undergoing tracheotomy was performed to examine the incidence of resulting complications. All tracheotomies were performed by a junior otolaryngology resident under the supervision of a member of the attending staff or a chief resident. The vast majority were performed at the bedside in an intensive care unit. The complications were divided into two groups: early (within 2 days) and late (2 to 14 days). Seven patients had complications directly related to tracheotomy. Four of these complications occurred in three patients and were consid

Anesthesia Management in a Crisponi Syndrome Patient Undergoing Tracheotomy Surgery.

Increased salivation and contractions of the oropharyngeal muscles are frequently observed in Crisponi syndrome. This causes frequent recurrent lung infections. Anesthesia management can be challenging due to the frequent convulsions that occur during the intubation and extubation of the patient and subsequent cyanosis and hyperthermia attacks. Cold-induced sweating attacks may also occur due to the low operating room temperature. Hyperthermia attacks can lead to rhabdomyolysis and disseminated intravascular coagulation. Sudden deaths may occur in children with Crisponi syndrome. Hyperthermia,

Early postoperative complications following tracheotomy: Does suturing technique influence outcomes?

INTRODUCTION: Tracheotomy is one of the most commonly performed procedure by otolaryngologists, but no consensus exists on the effect of suturing techniques on postoperative complications. Stay sutures and Bjork flaps are utilized frequently for securing the tracheal incision to the neck skin in order to create a tract for recannulation. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of tracheotomies performed by Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery providers (May 2014 to August 2020) was conducted to determine the effect of suturing technique on postoperative complications and patient outcomes. Cervical anaerobic vertebral osteomyelitis following surgical tracheotomy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: We report a rare case of anaerobic vertebral osteomyelitis associated with surgical tracheotomy which has never been reported to the best of our knowledge. CASE PRESENTATION: A healthy 39-year-old man was admitted to intensive care for a severe brain trauma injury where a surgical tracheotomy was performed. He was discharged to a rehabilitation centre after 54 days hospital stay. During rehabilitation, he developed progressive and febrile tetraplegia associated with cervical pain, requiring an intensive care readmission. A polymicrobial anaerobic bloodstream infection was revealed

Transmediastinal Trachea Closure after Dilational Tracheotomy Positioned Too Low Down.

Dilational tracheotomy is a minimally invasive method that can be performed at the bedside on patients requiring long-term mechanical ventilation. In our 70-year-old male patient, percutaneous dilational tracheotomy (Ciaglia Blue Rhino, Cook Medical Inc., Bloomington, Indiana, United States) was performed because of bilateral pneumonia with sepsis. There were no initial problems. Nine days later, while the patient was being repositioned, the tracheal cannula became dislocated. Despite extending the cervical incision it was not possible to recannulate. The tracheal hole could not be felt with c
