Impact of treatment modality on cognition in older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive impairment impacts functionality and health outcomes in older adults with diabetes mellitus. Crucially, managing diabetes involves many self-management activities that require adequate cognitive abilities. Pharmacological therapy for diabetes mellitus in older persons should address both cognitive functions and glycaemic control. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between the treatment modality of diabetes and cognitive functions in the elderly. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional hospital-based study of older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus over 1 year was conduc

Executive functions in adults born small for gestational age at term: a prospective cohort study.

There are mixed findings regarding executive functioning in individuals born small for gestational age (SGA) at term and associations between performance-based and self-reported executive functions have yet to be examined in adults. In a prospective cohort study, 56 SGA and 68 non-SGA control participants were assessed at 32 years using the performance-based Trail Making Test (TMT) and the self-report questionnaire Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function - Adult Version (BRIEF-A). The SGA group used 1.6 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.1-3.1) to 3.9 (95% CI 1.2-6.5) seconds more on TMT

Short cognitive/neuropsychological test battery for first-tier fitness-to-drive assessment of older adults.

Since fitness-to-drive evaluation of elderly drivers has become an important issue, we developed a short first-tier screening battery to evaluate the necessity for further referral to specialised centres. Our sample consisted of 84 subjects between 65 and 96 years who came to the Belgian Road Safety institute for a fitness-to-drive evaluation. Using cross-validated discriminant analyses, the predictive power of a battery consisting of the Trail Making Test, Part A, a visual acuity test, a clock drawing test, the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and age was analysed. The judgement by an ind

Ruminations and their correlates in depressive episodes: Between-group comparison in patients with unipolar or bipolar depression and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Rumination is an important feature of affective disorders. Relationships between rumination, cognitive function, emotion regulation, and psychological resilience have been examined in unipolar depression; but few studies have determined whether unipolar and bipolar depressive episodes are distinguishable in terms of these variables. This study examined rumination in relation to clinical and cognitive variables in patients with unipolar depression or bipolar depression, and healthy controls. METHODS: In total, 150 participants (50 bipolar, 50 unipolar, 50 controls) were included. A

Baseline Cerebrospinal Fluid α-Synuclein in Parkinson's Disease Is Associated with Disease Progression and Cognitive Decline.

Biomarkers are increasingly recognized as tools in the diagnosis and prognosis of neurodegenerative diseases. No fluid biomarker for Parkinson’s disease (PD) has been established to date, but α-synuclein, a major component of Lewy bodies in PD and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), has become a promising candidate. Here, we investigated CSF α-synuclein in patients with PD (n = 28), PDD (n = 8), and DLB (n = 5), applying an electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. Median values were non-significantly (p = 0.430) higher in patients with PDD and DLB (287 pg/mL) than in PD (236 pg/mL). A group of n = 3

Long-term tacrine treatment in three mild Alzheimer patients: effects on nicotinic receptors, cerebral blood flow, glucose metabolism, EEG, and cognitive abilities.

The effect of long-term treatment with tacrine (tetrahydroaminoacridine) was studied in three Alzheimer patients (aged 57, 64, and 68 years) with mild dementia. All three patients had a Mini-Mental State Examination score of 24/30 and carried at least one apolipoprotein E (ApoE) epsilon4 allele. Tacrine was given in doses between 80 and to 160 mg daily for 13-31 months. A lower tacrine concentration was observed generally in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) compared with plasma. The acetylcholinesterase activity in CSF tended to be increased following longer periods of tacrine treatment, whereas the

Test-Retest Reliability of Measures Commonly Used to Measure Striatal Dysfunction across Multiple Testing Sessions: A Longitudinal Study.

Cognitive impairment is common amongst many neurodegenerative movement disorders such as Huntington's disease (HD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) across multiple domains. There are many tasks available to assess different aspects of this dysfunction, however, it is imperative that these show high test-retest reliability if they are to be used to track disease progression or response to treatment in patient populations. Moreover, in order to ensure effects of practice across testing sessions are not misconstrued as clinical improvement in clinical trials, tasks which are particularly vulnerable t

Bifidobacterium longum with fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS) treatment in minimal hepatic encephalopathy: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.

Minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) describes patients with chronic liver disease or cirrhosis who have no clinical symptoms of brain dysfunction but perform worse on psychometric tests compared with healthy subjects. The pathogenesis of hepatic encephalopathy is controversial although ammonia has been found to induce cerebral dysfunction. Increased intestinal ammonia production is due to bacterial urease activity and the production of other toxin methabolities, such as mercaptans, thioles. This study assesses the clinical efficacy of Bifidobacterium longum plus fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS)
