Regulation of Cerebral Blood Flow Velocity by Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation: A Preliminary Study.

OBJECTIVES: An excessive and abrupt increase in cerebral blood flow may cause blood vessel damage, leading to stroke. Therefore, appropriate methods to immediately regulate blood flow velocity are important. Through an analysis of 31 healthy adults, we therefore investigated whether stimulating the common carotid artery (CCA) using transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) could modulate blood flow velocity in the CCA. METHODS: Three stimulation intensities (below-threshold, threshold, and above-threshold) were applied in a random order. Blood velocity changes were examined by the me

Managing acute phantom limb pain with transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Phantom limb pain is characterized by painful sensations in the amputated limb. The clinical presentation of acute phantom limb pain may differ from that of patients with chronic phantom limb pain. The variation observed implies that acute phantom limb pain may be driven by peripheral mechanisms, indicating that therapies focused on the peripheral nervous system might be successful in reducing pain. CASE PRESENTATION: A 36-year-old African male with acute phantom limb pain in the left lower limb, was treated with transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. CONCLUSION: The asse

Evoking haptic sensations in the foot through high-density transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulations.

OBJECTIVE: Evoking haptic sensation on upper limb amputees via peripheral nerve stimulation has been investigated intensively in the past decade, but related studies involving lower limb amputees are limited. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using non-invasive transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation to evoke haptic sensation along the phantom limb of the amputated foot of transtibial amputees. APPROACH: A high-density electrode grid (4 × 4) was placed over the skin surface above the distal branching of the sciatic, tibial, and common peroneal nerves. We hypothesized that el

A Study on Duration of Effect of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation Therapy on Whole Saliva Flow.

BACKGROUND: Saliva is a complex fluid, whose important role is to maintain the well being of oral cavity. Salivary gland hypofunction or hyposalivation is the condition of having reduced saliva production which leads to the subjective complaint of oral dryness termed xerostomia.(7) Management of xerostomia includes palliative therapy using topical agents or systemic therapy. Electrostimulation to produce saliva was studied in the past and showed moderate promise but never became part of mainstream therapy. Hence, this study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of transcutaneous electrical ner

Transcutaneous electrical stimulation of the recurrent laryngeal nerve: a method of controlling vocal cord position.

This study was designed to examine the feasibility of transcutaneous stimulation of the recurrent laryngeal nerve. Electrical activation of the recurrent laryngeal nerve was achieved by applying a blunt electrode to the intact neck skin at specific points along the tracheoesophageal groove in anesthetized adult dogs. The stimulus consisted of 10 mA cathodal pulses, each of 1 msec duration, delivered at a frequency of 10 Hz and increased by 10 Hz increments up to 100 Hz. Vocal cord excursion was directly related to the frequency of applied current. In all six dogs studies, stimulation at 30 Hz
