Numerical and experimental analysis of flow distortion induced by ultrasonic transducers in gas flowmeters.

This study investigates the flow field distribution near the transducer and quantifies the distortion of the velocity profile along ultrasonic paths. It elucidates the physical mechanisms through which flow separation—induced by the mainstream flow around the transducer—affects ultrasonic flowmeter measurements. Experimental analyses examine the influence of localized flow field distortion under various pressures and flow rates, leading to the development of an error correction model consistent with empirical data. Numerical simulations are performed for three transducer installation modes: fu

Intracerebroventricular pressure inhibits gastric antral and duodenal contractility but not acid secretion in conscious rabbits.

Acute nausea characteristically accompanies head injury or increased intracranial pressure, or both. The etiology of this symptom is unclear. We studied the effect of increased intracranial pressure on gastric antral and duodenal contractility and gastric acid secretion in conscious rabbits. Intracerebroventricular pressure was maintained at 3, 8, or 13 cmH2O using normal saline perfused into the lateral cerebral ventricle and gastric antral and duodenal contractility was monitored using chronically implanted strain gauge force transducers. Gastric acid secretion was measured in a separate gro

Oesophago-gastric junction opening function: assessment using ultrasound imaging and the effects of atropine.

Relaxation and opening of the oesophago-gastric junction (OGJ) is crucial for oesophageal transport. A novel ultrasound technique was used to determine OGJ opening, before and after atropine, in 12 normals. An ultrasound probe, a solid-state pressure transducer and an infusion tube were placed inside a 20-mm diameter bag, which was placed across the OGJ. At various bag pressures ultrasound transducer was pulled across the bag. Acquired B-mode ultrasound images were converted into M-mode image to display the oesophagus, OGJ and stomach. At low bag-pressure (< 20 mmHg), the OGJ but not oesophagu

Urethral pressure profiles in the female canine implanted with sacral anterior nerve root electrodes.

The purpose of this work was to study the pressure distribution along the urethra in female canines with and without electrical stimulation of the sacral anterior roots innervating the bladder and urethra. Urethral pressure profiles were recorded in two orientations, dorsal and ventral, with microtransducer catheters. Two pulse types were applied at 1 Hz, 500 micros quasitrapezoidal pulses to selectively activate the small axons and 100 micros rectangular pulses. Four parameters were measured from each profile; maximum urethral pressure (MUP), bladder pressure (Pv), functional urethral length

'Simultaneous' urethral pressure profilometry in the bitch: methodology and reproducibility of the technique.

The technique of 'simultaneous' urethral pressure profilometry in the bitch is described. Four consecutive recordings were made from each of 100 bitches. From each recording, the maximum urethral closure pressure and functional profile length were measured and assessed for reproducibility. Analyses of variance revealed no significant differences (P greater than 0.2) between the measurements of functional profile length (means: 3.84, 3.84, 3.83, 3.80 cm; standard error of the differences: 0.037) but there were significant variations (P less than 0.001) in maximum urethral closure pressure (mean

Recording of intraureteric pressures in women with a new technique.

This paper describes a new technique for recording intraureteric pressures (ureterometry) and its application in the examination of ureteric peristalsis in 20 women. A multichannel catheter, connected to pressure transducers permits recording of the intraureteric pressure simultaneously at three levels, 5-7, 15-17, 25-27 cm from the ureteric orifice. The mean amplitudes of the peristaltic waves at these 3 levels were about 14, 19 and 26 cm H2O, respectively. The peristaltic travel rate averaged 33 mm per second in the lower and 40 mm per second in the upper part of the ureter. This technique w

The immediate effect of colposuspension on resting and stressed urethral pressure profiles in anaesthetized incontinent bitches.

The aim of this study was to document what changes in the resting and stressed urethral pressure profile occur in the incontinent bitch with urethral sphincter mechanism incompetence (SMI) immediately after colposuspension. Resting and stressed subtracted simultaneous urethral pressure profilometry was performed immediately pre- and postcolposuspension in 26 bitches diagnosed with SMI. All of the urethral pressure profiles were measured in anaesthetized bitches using a standard technique and two orientations of the catheter transducers (dorsal and left). Readable pre- and postoperative urethra

Effects of xylazine butorphanol on cecal arterial blood flow, cecal mechanical activity, and systemic hemodynamics in horses.

A chronic model with an ultrasonic transit time blood flow probe and strain gauge force transducers implanted on the cecum was used to evaluate cecal mechanical activity and cecal arterial blood flow in 4 conscious adult horses. Intravenous administration of xylazine (1.1 mg/kg of body weight) significantly decreased heart rate and cardiac output, but significantly increased diastolic pulmonary arterial pressure, mean pulmonary arterial pressure, carotid arterial pressure, and central venous pressure. Lateral cecal arterial blood flow after xylazine administration was decreased substantially m

Antroduodenal motor response to solid-liquid and homogenized meals.

The effect of the physical state of food on antroduodenal motor activity and the pattern of the emptying of an aqueous phase marker were examined in 6 healthy volunteers using an intestinal perfusion technique and intraluminal pressure transducers. Ingestion of a solid-liquid meal produced marked phasic changes in pressure in the distal antrum, lasting 92 +/- 10 min (mean +/- SE), while, in contrast, ingestion of the same nutrients in a homogenized state resulted in complete absence of distal antral changes in pressure lasting 133 +/- 12 min. The motor responses of the proximal antrum and duod

A PROSPECTIVE CLINICAL TRIAL OF EUS-SHEAR WAVE MEASUREMENT OF LIVER AND SPLEEN FOR HEPATIC FIBROSIS.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Endosonographic shear wave measurement (EUS-SWM) is a novel method for assessing hepatic fibrosis. We assessed its diagnostic accuracy, reproducibility, and the impact of transducer pressure. Additionally, EUS-SWM of the spleen was performed to assess correlation with liver fibrosis. METHODS: Between January and October 2025, this single-center prospective clinical trial enrolled patients undergoing EUS-guided liver biopsy for concomitant EUS-SWM of the liver and spleen. Measurements of both hepatic lobes were obtained using standard and excessive transducer pressure. For

Regional myocardial dimensions following coronary artery bypass grafting in patients. Relationship of functional deterioration to graft occlusion.

The direct relationship between graft flow and regional midwall myocardial function has not been documented in patients. Therefore, the present study was designed to quantitate the effects of coronary artery bypass grafting on regional myocardial mechanics distal to a coronary artery obstruction. Twenty-one patients with subtotal or total occlusion of the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery underwent coronary artery bypass grafting. Following completion of the aortic and coronary anastomoses, two miniature ultrasonic dimension transducers (2.5 mm. diameter) were positioned within th

Large-Area All-Textile Pressure Sensors for Monitoring Human Motion and Physiological Signals.

Wearable pressure sensors, which can perceive and respond to environmental stimuli, are essential components of smart textiles. Here, large-area all-textile-based pressure-sensor arrays are successfully realized on common fabric substrates. The textile sensor unit achieves high sensitivity (14.4 kPa-1 ), low detection limit (2 Pa), fast response (≈24 ms), low power consumption (<6 µW), and mechanical stability under harsh deformations. Thanks to these merits, the textile sensor is demonstrated to be able to recognize finger movement, hand gestures, acoustic vibrations, and real-time pulse wave

The effects on subtalar contact and pressure following talonavicular and midtarsal joint arthrodesis.

Many clinical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of both isolated talonavicular and complete midtarsal joint arthrodesis as an alternative to triple arthrodesis. However, in many cases, controversy exists as to which procedure to utilize. Evidence of degenerative radiographic changes and stiffness of the subtalar joint have been reported postoperatively. A cadaveric study at two different loading values, utilizing low-range pressure film transducers and digital scanning, was performed to quantify articular contact effects on the subtalar joint following isolated talonavicular joint ar

Cerebrovascular tone rather than intracranial pressure determines the effective downstream pressure of the cerebral circulation in the absence of intracranial hypertension.

Cerebral perfusion pressure is commonly calculated from the difference between mean arterial pressure and intracranial pressure because intracranial pressure is known to represent the effective downstream pressure of the cerebral circulation. Studies of other organs, however, have shown that effective downstream pressure is determined by a critical closing pressure located at the arteriolar level. This study was designed to investigate the effects of PCO2-induced variations in cerebrovascular tone on the effective downstream pressure of the cerebral circulation. Sixteen patients recovering fro

Peripheral high-energy missile hits cause pressure changes and damage to the nervous system: experimental studies on pigs.

The aim of the present study was to investigate pressure changes and possible damage to the central and peripheral nervous system induced by a high-energy missile striking a peripheral extremity. Anesthetized pigs were shot with a high-velocity missile (1,500 ms-1) in their left thigh. Transducers placed in the abdomen and brain recorded short-lasting bursts (1.0 to 1.5 ms) of oscillating pressure waves of high frequency. The amplitude of the pressure waves within the brain was about 125 KPa, and in the abdomen about 270 KPa, with a mean value of transferred energy from the missile of about 70

Heterogeneity of intrapleural pressures during exercise.

We determined whether the caudodorsal region of the intrapleural space in exercising horses experiences larger pressure fluctuations than other regions and whether systematic phase-shifting of peak intrapleural pressures along the length of the thorax suggests the existence of locomotor-induced intrapleural pressure waves. We utilised percutaneous introducers and solid-state pressure-tip transducers implanted along the dorsal aspect of the thorax, mid-thorax or oesophagus to measure regional intrapleural pressures while 3 horses galloped on a flat treadmill at 13-14 m/s, then recorded pressure

Automated measurement of intraperitoneal pressure versus patient fill-volume.

Measuring intraperitoneal pressure (IPP) has been proposed as a means to help maintain optimal ultrafiltration and prevent complications such as hernias, peritoneal leaks, and gastroesophageal reflux, which are linked with high IPP levels. The Durand method is a commonly accepted method for measuring IPP; however, it is cumbersome and not routinely used in clinics due to its complexity. Here we report the outcome of a pilot study that evaluated the agreement between IPP measured using an in-line pressure transducer and IPP measured using the Durand method during in-clinic automated peritoneal

Laryngeal reflex mechanism during deglutition--observation of subglottal pressure and afferent discharge.

In this investigation, particular attention was paid to elucidate the laryngeal reflex mechanism of protective closure and the sensory function of the larynx during deglutition. For this purpose, three different experimental procedures were adopted: (1) subglottal pressure of felines was measured during deglutition using a pressure transducer; (2) subglottal pressure of human beings was measured during deglutition using a pressure transducer; and (3) afferent discharges from superior and recurrent laryngeal nerves of felines were recorded. The following conclusions appear justified. (1) Feline
