OBJECTIVES: Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) has become the primary method to relieve bladder outlet obstruction for patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Data from 3861 consecutive patients with BPH who underwent TURP from 1971 to 1996 at our hospital were retrospectively analyzed.
METHODS: The patients were classified into two groups comprising 1930 patients who underwent TURP from 1971 to 1985 (early group) and 1931 patients who underwent TURP from 1985 to 1996 (late group). Risk factors associated with blood transfusions and perioperative complications were analy

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate longer term effects of transurethral resection (TURP) and incision (TUIP) of the prostate in randomized patients.
METHODS: In a randomized, prospective study, 120 patients with symptoms of bladder outlet obstruction caused by smaller benign prostates (estimated resectable weight less than 20 g) were assigned to TURP or TUIP. Patients were evaluated preoperatively and at intervals postoperatively as to urinary symptoms (Madsen's questionnaire), sexual function, and uroflowmetry. Overall evaluation of outcome of surgery was also assessed at follow-up visits.

To analyze whether different volumes of tissue resected during transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) would associate with the subsequent development of prostate cancer. This population-based retrospective cohort study recruited 49,206 patients with benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) undergoing TURP between 2005 and 2012. Patients were recruited from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. Patients were separated into three groups, based on different volumes of tissue resected during TURP (5-15 g, 15-50 g, >50 g).Of the 49,206 patients, 633 patients were diagnosed with ne

INTRODUCTION: Benign prostatic hyperplasia is considered a worldwide disease among males in middle age. Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a wide used intervention for this condition. A few reports mentioned cerebrovascular accidents after TURP.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 65-year-old male presented with recurrent urinary retention in the past two years. Clinical examination showed a full urinary bladder with abdominal discomfort. Abdominal ultrasound revealed an enlarged prostate (90 ml) with approximately 500 ml of urine. After that, we performed transurethral resection of the pr

OBJECTIVES: Previous transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) was reported to impose difficulties during open radical prostatectomy. We describe our experience in laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP) following transurethral resection of the prostate.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The series included 35 patients: 22 patients underwent transperitoneal LRP (tpLRP) and 13 underwent extraperitoneal LRP (epLRP). The minimal interval between TURP and laparoscopy was 3 months. Patients' charts were reviewed for their preoperative characteristics, intraoperative difficulties and complications, and o

OBJECTIVES: To describe the rate of infectious complications using a discontinuous scheme of oral ciprofloxacin in transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR-P). To try to weigh the influence of clinical background, operative complications and postoperative outcome on the development of such complications. To compare the results to those obtained with equal methodology using antibiotics in a continual scheme until the catheter removal.
METHOD: A prospective open study was designed including 53 consecutive patients with sterile urine and without indwelling catheter subjected to TUR-P. Patien

PURPOSE: We investigated prostate cancer (ca.) development after transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 1995 to 2003, 430 patients (pts.) received TURP at Toshiba Rinkan Hospital. Of them, 23 pts. (5.3%) had incidental carcinoma (Stage A), which developed into clinically significant ca. after 1 to 5 years in 5 (22% of Stage A, 1.2% of TURP). In 13 (3.2%) of 407 Non-Stage A pts. (who had no ca. initially), prostate ca. developed after 1 to 7 yrs. A total of 21 pts. (including 3 Stage A pts. diagnosed before 1994) underwent radical prostatectomy. Stage A pts.

BACKGROUND: It has been reported that transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) after definitive radiation therapy for prostate cancer is associated with a significant risk of incontinence. The presumed reason for incontinence is external sphincter damage from TURP or pre-existing damage from either extension of prostate cancer or radiation therapy.
METHODS: We reviewed seven recent cases of TURP for bladder outlet obstruction in patients who had undergone radiation therapy for clinical stage T(3-4)M(0)N(0) adenocarcinoma of the prostate. All seven men progressed to either chronic retent

OBJECTIVE: The common goals of new surgical treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) are to improve subjective and objective symptoms, to decrease the risk of postoperative complications and short hospitalization. Transurethral electrovaporization of the prostate (TUVP) is a new, minimally invasive and a promising alternative to standard transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) in the treatment of BPH. The aim of this study is to compare the efficacy and safety of these two treatment alternatives.
METHODS: A prospective randomized trial of 60 patients with symptomatic BPH was pe

OBJECTIVES: There are patients with obstructive voiding symptoms and suspicious screening parameters in whom prostate cancer (PC) cannot be excluded prior to transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). The goal of our study was to assess the diagnostic value of systematic biopsies of the peripheral zone of the prostate performed during TURP.
METHODS: Between 1990 and 1995, 132 patients (average age 69.5 +/- 7.4 years) with at least one suspicious screening parameter underwent a TURP and additional systematic prostate biopsies. Pathology reports were reviewed to verify whether PC was prese

BACKGROUND: Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) was considered the golden standard to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) for decades. However, TURP was associated with low efficiency to alleviate the lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and a significantly higher risk of bladder neck contracture (BNC) for patients with small-volume BPH. Our study aims to compare the therapeutic effect of a transurethral split of the prostate (TUSP) with TURP for patients with small-volume BPH (<30 mL).
METHODS: In this study, 101 small-volume BPH patients were randomly divided into two groups

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) is more frequently associated with perioperative fluid and electrolyte disturbances than transurethral resection of bladder tumors (TURT) because of irrigating fluid absorption. Because fluid overload may cause hypertension, we compared the patients' intraoperative hemodynamic profiles (including the incidence of hypertension) during TURP vs TURT, both performed during spinal anesthesia, by using the bioimpedance method.
DESIGN: Prospective single-blind study.
SETTING: University hospital.
