Fasciola gigantica and F hepatica: a comparative study of some characteristics of Fasciola infection in Lymnaea truncatula infected by either of the two trematodes.

Experimental infections were carried out using three Lymnaea truncatula populations and two Fasciola species in order to determine the trematode influence on six parameters of snail infection by either of the two trematodes. All experiments were performed using snails 4 mm long, two miracidia for each L truncatula, and a constant temperature of 20 degrees C. No significant influence of trematode species was detected in the following parameters: snail survival at day 30, the life span of infected snails (from miracidial exposure to snail death), the increase in shell length throughout the exper

Genetic parameters and single-step genome-wide association analysis for trematode (Fasciola hepatica and Calicophoron/Paramphistomum spp.) infections in German dairy cows.

Infections with the liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica) cause economic losses in cattle production worldwide. Also, infections with rumen flukes (Calicophoron/Paramphistomum spp.) are gaining importance in grazing cattle in Europe. However, increasing resistance of helminth parasites against anthelmintics and limitations in treatment emphasize the need for alternative breeding approaches. This study included 1602 dairy cows kept on 29 farms with 2423 observations for F. hepatica and Calicophoron/Paramphistomum spp. egg counts per gram faeces (EPG). The EPGs were binary defined (infected: EPG > 0;

Molecular identification of Haplorchis taichui and other trematodes infecting thiarid freshwater snails from Southern Philippines.

Fish-borne zoonotic trematodiases (FZT) are neglected parasitic infections of global public health significance, persisting in communities where there is a cultural practice of consuming raw or undercooked freshwater fish. In the Philippines, FZT surveillance efforts remain largely focused on human stool-based diagnostics, leaving intermediate host transmission stages poorly characterized. In this study, we provide molecular characterization of the zoonotic trematode cercariae infecting thiarid snails from five FZT-endemic barangays in New Corella, Davao del Norte, Southern Philippines. A faunistic survey of snails and their infection with digenean trematode cercariae in Bandar-e Anzali at the littoral of the Caspian Sea.

Trematodes are known as a diverse group of endogenous parasites, which snails as their intermediate hosts can dramatically affect parasite transmission dynamics. Snails play a key role in life cycles of digenean trematode. However, there has not been much faunistic surveys in terms of snails' distribution in Iran. The current study was aimed to identify snail's fauna and their current geographic distribution in four regions of Guilan province, Iran. Several species of snails (land and freshwater snails) were obtained from 4 different areas (2018-2019), and then samples were separately transfer

Variation in Trematode Infection in Snails Associated with Land Cover and Water Chemistry in the Central Illinois River Watershed.

Parasites can affect animal populations and communities in aquatic ecosystems. However, greater understanding is needed for the distributions and drivers of parasite infection levels in many areas. This study focuses on parasite prevalence (percent infected hosts) of an important class of parasites, trematodes, in 2 species of snail first intermediate hosts (Planorbella trivolvis and Physa sp.) in the Illinois River watershed, which has been impacted by human development. We hypothesized that trematode prevalence depends on local (e.g., water chemistry) and landscape (e.g., proximity to the Il

Environmental determinants of distribution of freshwater snails and trematode infection in the Omo Gibe River Basin, southwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Determination of infection rates of snail populations is one of the basic tools for epidemiological studies of snail borne diseases. In this study, we opted to determine the trematode infection of freshwater snails in the Omo-Gibe River Basin, southwest Ethiopia. METHODS: We collected snail samples from 130 observation sites in lakes, wetlands, rivers, reservoirs and irrigation canals surveyed during the dry season (March to May) in 2016. The snail samples were examined for trematode infections by cercarial shedding immediately after collection. Habitat conditions, water quality,

Types of trematodes infecting freshwater snails found in irrigation canals in the East Nile locality, Khartoum, Sudan.

BACKGROUND: The planorbid freshwater snails of the two genera, Biomphalaria and Bulinus -have been vigorously studied due to the role they play as intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis. In Sudan specifically, most studies have focused on the chemical and ecological control of the two genera, but few studies have looked at their biological control. This study explored the coexistence of other species of freshwater snails and the two genera along with their trematode infections in relation to a number of environmental factors in the East Nile locality, Khartoum state, Sudan. METHODS: Freshwater

Thymus-independent crypt hyperplasia and villous atrophy in the small intestine of mice infected with the trematode Echinostoma revolutum.

Conventional mice and congenitally athymic, nude mice were infected with 20 metacercariae of the intestinal trematode Echinostoma revolutum. The sequential events in the pathological changes in the intestine were studied at different intervals post-infection. By day 11 onwards the conventional mice displayed dilatation of the region of the intestine which harboured the parasites. The mucosa in the dilated region showed marked crypt hyperplasia, villous atrophy and subepithelial fibrosis as the most conspicuous features which, together with a hypertrophy of the muscular layers, made the wall of

Decoding the gene expression response of Cerastoderma edule to chronic trematode infection: A comparison among host tissues.

Parasites can induce gene expression changes in their hosts, either benefiting the parasite or the host. In particular, trematodes are not only one of the most ubiquitous groups of aquatic parasites, they also have huge impacts on individual hosts with significant ecological and economic repercussions. The trematode Bucephalus minimus infects Cerastoderma edule (the edible cockle), a socioeconomically and ecologically important bivalve, as its first intermediate host. This parasite is one of the most harmful parasites infecting cockles, affecting their ability to reproduce, grow, and survive,

Discovery of Carcinogenic Liver Fluke Metacercariae in Second Intermediate Hosts and Surveillance on Fish-Borne Trematode Metacercariae Infections in Mekong Region of Myanmar.

Countries of lower Mekong regions are highly alarmed by the spread of fish-borne trematode infections, i.e., small liver flukes and minute intestinal flukes especially in Thailand, Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar. Moreover; the incidence of cholangiocarcinoma has also been increasing in the endemic area of liver fluke infections. Only a few reports have been published concerning the fish-borne trematodes infections in the central region of Myanmar. However; there is still a lack of information regarding the status of trematodes infections in second int

Patterns of trematode infections of Opisthorchis viverrini (Opisthorchiidae) and Haplorchis taichui (Heterophyidae) in human populations from two villages in Savannakhet Province, Lao PDR.

The liver fluke, Opisthorchis viverrini, and the minute intestinal fluke, Haplorchis taichui, are prevalent in many Asian countries. This study analysed the patterns of infections of O. viverrini and H. taichui in Lahanam and Thakhamlien villages (Savannakhet Province, Lao PDR), in two cross-sectional investigations. Out of a total of 207 human participants, post-anthelmintic treatment positivity rates for expelled worms were 170 (82.1%) for H. taichui and 65 (31.4%) for O. viverrini. Both these species co-exist in the study villages. When each parasite was analysed separately, H. taichui infe

Infection with trematodes Apophallus sp. affects the growth and activity of hydrolytic enzymes in the invasive gravel snail Lithoglyphus naticoides.

Currently, the alien freshwater gastropod Lithoglyphus naticoides is rapidly expanding its range and promoting the spread of parasitic trematodes Apophallus sp. These flatworms use the snail as intermediate host and may cause the dangerous black-spotted disease in fish juveniles. However, despite the obvious importance of knowing the physiological bases of this host-parasite interplay, studies in this area remain scanty. Therefore we focused on the size-weight and physiological parameters of L.naticoides and their changes in response to Apophallus infection. It was found that the shell height
