Live triatomine bug, vector of Trypanosoma cruzi , found engorged in Lisbon hotel room: A first for Portugal and for Europe.

Triatomine bugs are blood feeding insects that transmit the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, causative agent of Chagas disease. The bugs are found primarily in the Americas with a few species in Asia and Africa. Here, we report the first case of a live triatomine bug in Europe, found in a Lisbon hotel room. In August 2025 the hotel room occupants discovered a triatomine bug perched on the headboard of their bed. Upon capture, bright red blood emerged from the bug; the occupants suspected that it had bitten them during the night. The bug was identified morphologically as triatomine species Hospesneo

Reduced Biodiversity is Linked to Higher Triatomine Occupancy: Chagas Disease Implications.

The hypothetical link between a reduction in biodiversity and increased zoonotic diseases remains debatable. We tested this by utilising remote vegetation density and protected areas (PAs) as proxies for biodiversity and examined their relationship with triatomine richness and occupancy. Triatomine bugs serve as the primary vector for Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease. Although no link was found between triatomine species richness and vegetation, triatomine occupancy was lower within PAs than outside. Consequently, our findings suggest that reduced biodiversity may lead

Genetic Identification of Brazilian Mammalian Hosts of Trypanosoma cruzi: Improving Blood Meal Source Discrimination in Vector-Borne Transmission.

The detection of food sources of blood-sucking vectors is essential for a better understanding of the hosts, reservoirs, and other fauna that participate in the transmission web of hemoparasites. The molecular identification of triatomine blood meal sources (BMSs) has been shown to be highly sensitive and taxonomically specific when compared to the immunological method. The application of molecular cloning makes it possible to identify multiple BMS species and/or different individuals/haplotypes of the same vertebrate species in a single triatomine specimen. In Brazil, the molecular detection

Trypanosoma cruzi: comparative studies of infectivity of parasites ingested by Triatoma infestans and those present in their feces.

Artificial feeding of the insects with whole blood containing trypomastigotes resulted in triatome infection; the parasites were present in the host feces after 15--30 days and, when inoculated into mice, elicited parasitemia in 100% of the cases and deaths in 20--70%. This mortality indicates a reduction of the original infective capacity of the bloodstream form, which kills 100% of the mice even when inoculated with a single trypomastigote. When triatomes were fed whole normal mouse blood containing culture forms of low infective capacity (TulL), mice inoculated with feces containing the pro

Naturally occurring trypanosomiasis (Chagas' disease) in dogs.

Nine fatal cases of canine American trypanosomiasis (Chagas' disease) were encountered from November, 1972, through November, 1975. Of the 9 cases, 7 occurred in dogs from 5 central Texas counties, and all but one case was diagnosed during the months of September, October, or November. The source of infection was discovered in only one case--that being a doghouse heavily infested with Triatoma lectularius occulta. Each of 6 bugs collected had infective forms of the protozoan, Trypanosoma cruzi. Trypanosomiasis usually is not considered in the differential clinical diagnosis of cardiac dysfunct

Spatial overlap of palm trees and triatomine distribution areas in Brazil.

Trypanosoma cruzi transmission occurs in the sylvatic environment, requiring a profound understanding of the interaction between triatomines and their natural ecotopes. This study investigated the spatial association between four triatomine species (Rhodnius robustus, Rhodnius pictipes, Rhodnius neglectus, Rhodnius nasutus) and palm trees (Arecaceae) in Brazil. We employed analyses of ecological niche overlap (Schoener's D Index), spatial correlation (Spearman), and an assessment of vector presence across palm richness strata. Two distinct ecological profiles were identified. R. robustus and R.

"WhatsBarb" Citizen Surveillance: Survey of Insects Mistaken for Triatomines.

BACKGROUND: Triatomine recognition by the public is an important factor in Chagas disease (CD) prevention campaigns. Citizen surveillance has been demonstrated as an effective alternative strategy, increasing the possibility of monitoring vector populations on a broad geographic scale. Thus, our study aimed to explore a database built from pictorial/video records and specimens sent through citizen participation, identify the main groups confused with triatomines, and systematize the data on insect diversity. METHODS: Due to demand from the local community, the "WhatsBarb" project was establis

Entomological indicators and food sources of triatomines in the Brazilian semi-arid region.

BACKGROUND: Triatomines are biological vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas Disease (CD) and have various mammalian hosts. This study evaluated the entomological indicators and food sources of triatomines in Petrolina in the semi-arid region of Brazil, where CD is endemic. METHODS: Triatomines were captured indoors and outdoors through an active search and entomological indices (household and natural infections) were calculated. Parasitological analyses were performed through microscopic visualization using Giemsa-stained insect feces, and DNA sequencing was employed

Sylvatic focus of Chagas' disease in Oaxaca, Mexico.

During three field trips to the community of 'La Humedad', municipality of Santiago Jamiltepec, Oaxaca (a State in the southern part of the Mexican Republic), live specimens of Triatoma mazzottii Usinger (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) were found infected with Trypanosoma cruzi. The insects were captured in only one of the dwellings inspected in the locality, and in four small caves where bats and other mammals live. These findings suggest the need for further studies on the existence of a sylvatic cycle of Chagas' disease in Mexico, which has not yet been established.

The development of extra-intestinal cycle of Trypanosoma cruzi in Triatoma infestans and Panstrongylus megistus.

By applying various histological techniques the results obtained were similar to those in Lacombe's previous publications referring to the development of Trypanosoma cruzi in haemolymph, the later penetration in the Malpighian tubes and their return to the digestive tract. Trypomastigotes and sphaeromastigotes are found in the promesenteron after two hours of feeding the insect with mice blood containing numerous Trypanosoma cruzi. Some parasites move to the promesenteron from postmesenteron and others from the haemolymph of the insect. The amastigotes form inside the haemocytes, multiply, occ

A century of passive surveillance reveals widespread triatomines (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) across North Carolina, including detection of the Chagas disease parasite.

Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasitic protozoan that causes Chagas disease, can be transmitted via bite wound contamination with feces from triatomines ("kissing bugs," Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae). Often thought of as restricted to Central and South America, kissing bugs live throughout North America, including North Carolina and other southern regions of the United States. In this assessment of kissing bugs in North Carolina, data were gathered from clinic samples and public submissions to online and university collections. Climate data were obtained through the National Oceanic and Atmosp

Vertical climbing of triatomines on building materials: Implications for house infestation risk and vector control.

Vertical climbing performance is a critical but often overlooked factor in the household colonization process by triatomine vectors. This study evaluated the climbing efficiency of seven Mexican triatomine species (Triatoma longipennis, T. mazzottii, T. pallidipennis, T. rubida, T. picturata, Paratriatoma lecticularia, and Hospesneotomae protracta) across four common regional building materials: unplastered brick, plastered brick, wood, and mesh screen. A fifth material, plastered brick with oil-based paint, was also tested. Ascent times to a height of 25 cm were recorded under scotophase cond

On the mechanisms involved in biological heme crystallization.

Blood-feeding organisms digest hemoglobin, releasing large quantities of heme inside their digestive tracts. Free heme is very toxic, and these organisms have evolved several mechanisms to protect against its deleterious effects. One of these adaptations is the crystallization of heme into the dark-brown pigment hemozoin (Hz). Here we review the process of Hz formation, focusing on organisms other than Plasmodium that have contributed to a better understanding of heme crystallization. Hemozoin has been found in several distinct classes of organisms including protozoa, helminths and insects and

Customs which predispose to Chagas' disease and cysticercosis in Mexico.

Customs in small isolated populations of Mexico are described which influence the prevalence of cysticercosis and Chagas' disease. People in some villages prefer the taste of pork harboring cysticerci. Certain triatomids are thought to have aphrodisiac properties and are therefore eaten.

Glycosylation Patterns in Meccus (Triatoma) pallidipennis Gut: Implications for the Development of Vector Control Strategies.

The primary mode of transmission for Chagas disease is vector-borne transmission, spread by hematophagous insects of the Triatominae subfamily. In Mexico, the triatomine Meccus pallidipennis is particularly significant in the transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi. This study focused on analyzing protein expression and modifications by glycosylation in different regions of the digestive tract of fifth-instar nymphs of M. pallidipennis. Two gut sections were dissected and extracted: the anterior midgut (AMG) and the proctodeum or rectum (RE). Proteins were extracted from each tissue sample and profi

Changing World: Vectors, Climate and Society.

A critical review of the impact of climate change on vector-borne diseases (VBDs) was carried out. The systems Chagas-Triatominae as hemimetabolous insect and leishmaniasis-Phlebotominae as holometabolous with terrestrial larval stages were taken as examples and both were considered for their diversity of vector species, reservoirs and socio-environmental settings of transmission. Results from the literature were discussed in relation to: a) the multiplicity of causes, targets and consequences from the perspective of multilevel eco-epidemiology; b) assumptions of linearity of predictive models

Automated identification of Chagas disease vectors using AlexNet pre-trained convolutional neural networks.

The 158 bug species that make up the subfamily Triatominae are the potential vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas disease. Despite recent progress in developing a picture-based automated system for identification of triatomines, an extensive and diverse image database is required for a broadly useful automated application for identifying these vectors. We evaluated performance of a deep-learning network (AlexNet) for identifying triatomine species from a database of dorsal images of adult insects. We used a sample of photos of 6397 triatomines belonging to seven genera

ITS-RFLP- and RAPD-based genetic variability of Trypanosoma cruzi I, human and vector strains in Santander, Colombia.

Chagas disease is a severe public health problem in Latin-American countries. In Colombia, the predominance of Trypanosoma cruzi I has been described in the literature, with a broad heterogeneity between strains. However, most of the studies carried out centered on isoenzyme analysis, with a smaller number that focus on other molecular methods. In this report, we discuss the results of a molecular analysis of T. cruzi I strains, isolated from the domestic cycle, from the department of Santander, one of the territorial divisions where the prevalence of infection is highest.
