AIM: To examine the association between epilation and corneal opacity (CO) among trichiasis patients presenting for surgery.
METHODS: Cross sectional data from the STAR trial were utilised. Patients presenting for trichiasis surgery in Wolayta Zone, Ethiopia, were evaluated for current trichiasis status. Number of inturned lashes, evidence of epilation, level of entropion, trichiasis duration, and CO were collected. The primary outcome was prevalence of CO, stratified by entropion and epilation status.
RESULTS: Approximately 10% of eyes with mild entropion had CO, regardless of epilation sta

BACKGROUND: Trachoma is the leading worldwide cause of preventable blindness. Surgery can alleviate trachomatous trichiasis (TT), the blinding sequelae of trachoma, but recurrence rates are high.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate risk factors for TT recurrence.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective case-control cohort study in Nepal that included patients with TT who were undergoing bilamellar tarsal-rotation surgery and control subjects who have scarring but no TT. Conjunctivae were graded for trachoma and swabbed to detect Chlamydia trachomatis by in-house and commercial (Roche Amplicor; Roche Diagn

The study was a prospective evaluation of the prevalence of distichiasis and/or dysplastic eyelashes among trachomatous trichiasis cases at the oculoplasty unit of a hospital in Oman over 3 months in 2000. An oculoplasty surgeon examined and photographed cases using a bio-microscope. Out of 80 cases, 58 (72.5%) had abnormal eyelashes in addition to trachomatous trichiasis. The rate of distichiasis and dysplastic lashes were 13.8% (95% CI 6.2%-21.3%) and 33.8% (95% CI 23.5%-44.1%) respectively; 25.0% (95% CI 15.5%-34.5%) had both. Dysplastic and distichiasis eyelashes were significantly more pr

PURPOSE: The aim of this prospective study was to verify the efficacy of laser therapy for trichiasis in trachoma. Trichiasis is one of the most important complications of trachoma which is endemic in Sanliurfa, a city in the southeast of Turkey.
METHODS: Twenty-eight eyelids of 22 patients - 15 males and 7 females - with trichiasis related to trachoma involving the upper, lower, or both lids, were included in the study and treated with a semiconductor diode-pumped, frequency-doubled, solid-state laser operating true CW at 532 nm.
RESULTS: 19 (67.9%) of the lids were successfully treated in

In a manner similar to dermabrasion, epidermalized tarsal conjunctiva is polished and then the tarsus is grafted with full-thickness buccal mucous membrane. This has been applied with rewarding results in patients afflicted with Stevens-Johnson syndrome, ocular pemphigoid and scarred eyelids with secondary epidermalization.

Trichiasis is a common misdirection of the eyelashes, creating a sharp point responsible for decreased vision, blepharospasm and corneal irritation. It may cause neurotrophic corneal disease leading to blindness. The etiology of trichiasis remains largely undetermined in our patient base. Treatment is based on pragmatic methods that take into account the ciliary ecosystem and the static and dynamic examination of the eyelids. For this, several therapeutic modalities exist: mechanical epilation, cryotherapy, surgery and electrolysis. Each of these techniques has its indications, advantages, and

BACKGROUND: Trachomatous trichiasis is the leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide. The World Health Organization recommends eyelid surgery to reduce the risk of visual impairment from trichiasis. Unfortunately, the number of cases operated has grown less than expected. An understanding of barriers is fundamental for instituting measures to increase surgical uptake. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore barriers of TT surgery implementation.
METHODS: A qualitative study design was employed in December 2019. Purposive sampling technique was used to select three districts from

Linear scleroderma en coup de sabre with ophthalmic findings has been previously described in the literature on numerous occasions. A 57-year-old woman presented with focal trichiasis secondary to tarsal thinning, adjacent to a linear brow and forehead deformity consistent with linear scleroderma en coup de sabre. Cases of linear scleroderma en coup de sabre involving the eyelids have been reported, most often with madarosis, ptosis, or skin atrophy; however, to the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported case of linear scleroderma associated with trichiasis and involvement of the deepe

BACKGROUND: Community-based lid surgery for trachomatous trichiasis (TT) is provided in 8 local government areas (LGAs) of Sokoto state since 2003 as part of a trachoma control programme. This study aims to assess the impact of community-based lid surgery on the magnitude of TT in 3 LGAs of Sokoto state.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A population-based survey was conducted in persons aged 15 years and above. A stratified multistage cluster sampling with probability proportional to size was used. Trachoma was assessed using the WHO simplified grading system.
RESULTS: Despite high (13%) refusals, 72%

BACKGROUND: Trichiasis recurrence following surgery is a serious problem for trachoma programs.
OBJECTIVE: To determine if postoperative treatment with azithromycin compared with topical tetracycline reduces recurrence up to 1 year, and if azithromycin treatment of household members provides additional benefit compared with treating only the surgical patient.
DESIGN: A randomized, single-masked, clinical trial was conducted in Ethiopia. A total of 1452 patients with trichiasis were randomized 1:1:1 to the following 3 arms: single-dose (1 g) oral azithromycin alone, single-dose azithromycin f

To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis evaluating the efficacy and safety outcomes of argon laser treatment for trichiasis, a common eye condition that can lead to blindness. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. PubMed, Cochrane Library, Science Direct, Embase, and ClinicalTrials.gov databases were searched for studies on argon laser treatment of trichiasis, without language restriction, up to March 2025. We computed random-effect meta-analysis and meta-regressions on putative influencing factors. The PRISMA guidelines were followed. The meta-analysis was registered on

Trachoma is a disease of the eye and the leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide. Years of repeated infections can cause in-turning of the lashes so that they rub against the eyeball, causing pain, discomfort and, if left untreated, blindness. This is known as trachomatous trichiasis (TT) and can be remedied by surgery. To improve oversight and reporting of TT outreach, Sightsavers developed a mobile phone application called the TT Tracker so that TT surgeons, assistants and supervisors can collect and analyse information about surgical outcomes and performance and determine when and w

BACKGROUND: Whilst previous work has identified clustering of the active trachoma sign "trachomatous inflammation-follicular" (TF), there is limited understanding of the spatial structure of trachomatous trichiasis (TT), the rarer, end-stage, blinding form of disease. Here we use community-level TF prevalence, information on access to water and sanitation, and large-scale environmental and socio-economic indicators to model the spatial variation in community-level TT prevalence in Benin, Cote d'Ivoire, DRC, Guinea, Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Sudan and Uganda.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Trachomatous trichiasis frequently returns following surgery. Several factors may promote recurrence: preoperative disease severity, surgeon ability, surgical procedure, healing responses, and infection. This study investigates whether enhanced control of infection, both of Chlamydia trachomatis and other bacteria, with azithromycin can improve surgical outcome in a trachoma control programme.
METHODS: Individuals with trachomatous trichiasis were examined and operated. After surgery patients were randomised to the azithromycin or control group. The azithromycin group and chil

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of long-term trichiasis recurrence following tarsal rotation and electro-epilation procedures has not been determined. A non-concurrent prospective study of surgical cases of trichiasis was therefore undertaken in Oman.
METHODS: A sample of 603 surgical cases of trichiasis (approximately half tarsal rotation and half electro-epilation) was followed for an average of 3.1 years to determine recurrence. Recurrence was defined as either mild (<5 lashes touching the globe) or severe (5 or more lashes touching the globe).
RESULTS: Overall, 56% (95% confidence interval of

AIM: Untreated trichiasis can lead to corneal opacity. Surgery to prevent the eyelashes from rubbing against the cornea is available, but many individuals with trichiasis never undergo the operation. This study estimates the cost of illness of untreated trichiasis and the willingness to pay for surgery and compares them with the actual cost of providing surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cost of illness estimate is based on trichiasis patient demographics. Data on the implicit price of obtaining surgery and surgical utilization in a matched pair randomized trial are used to infer individual

Women are at a greater risk compared to men for blinding complications from trachoma. In order to evaluate risk factors in women, 205 cases of trichiasis (TT) were selected from 11 villages in rural Tanzania. Each case of trichiasis was matched to two women of the same age and from the same village, who had no clinical signs of trachoma. Factors associated with trichiasis in a conditional logistic regression included history of trichiasis in the women's mother (odds ratio [OR] = 3.6; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.0-6.5); sleeping in a room with a cooking fire during childbearing years (OR =
