This gestational neoplasm arises from the trophoblast, the ectodermal layer of a fertilized ovum. Although benign, hydatidiform moles have the potential to progress to malignant trophoblastic disease. Molar pregnancy must be recognized promptly. The clinical presentation is usually vaginal bleeding, which may contain characteristic tissues. Diagnosis is confirmed by identification of hydropic avascular villi obtained by evacuation of uterine contents. The beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin is a valuable tumor marker.

The micropapillary variant of urothelial carcinoma has a reported incidence of 0.7%. Trophoblastic urinary carcinoma is very rare, with roughly 30 cases reported during the last century. This is the first report of mixed micropapillary and trophoblastic bladder carcinoma. A 45-year-old man presented with gross hematuria. His tumor contained choriocarcinomatoid areas with syncytiotrophoblasts, classic micropapillary carcinoma, conventional high-grade urothelial carcinoma, and flat carcinoma in situ. He underwent radical surgery; tumor stage was T4N2M0. Despite postoperative combination chemothe

Exaggerated placental site (EPS) reaction is a rare, poorly understood benign condition associated with persistent and excessive invasion of the uterus by intermediate trophoblasts. It often can mimic placental site trophoblastic tumor and epithelioid trophoblastic tumor. We present a 34-year-old woman with persistent elevation of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), who was unsuccessfully treated with chemotherapy for suspected gestational trophoblastic neoplasm. An MRI scan revealed infiltrative disease involving the uterine cervix and lower segment, following which she underwent hysterectomy

OBJECTIVE: Complete hydatidiform molar pregnancies occur in approximately 1 of 1,000 conceptions. After uterine evacuation of the trophoblastic tissue, women are followed up with serial serum human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) measurements. Patients are considered to have attained remission when their hCG level spontaneously declines to an undetectable level and remains there during a 6-month follow-up period. This standard effectively detects all disease recurrence; however, it is resource intensive, delays child bearing, and is subject to significant noncompliance. Our objective was to deter

Neoplasms of the placenta, other than trophoblastic tumors and chorangiomas, are exceedingly rare and predominantly include teratomas and metastatic maternal tumors. There has been a single case report of a hepatocellular adenoma-like neoplasm of the placenta that was characterized as most likely representing a specialized monodermal teratoma. We report a second apparent case of a hepatocellular adenoma-like lesion occurring in a preterm placenta with compelling morphologic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural validation of tissue hepatic in origin. It remains inconclusive that this lesio

This case report describes a rare presentation of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) in a 33-year-old postpartum woman, with extensive systemic and cutaneous metastases as the initial clinical manifestations. She presented with a palpable mass on her back and was subsequently found to have hepatic masses accompanied by elevated serum carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19-9 and β-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG). Subsequent imaging and histopathological evaluation confirmed a poorly differentiated ICC with atypical trabecular, nested, and sheet-like growth patterns, without evidence of trophoblas

Proliferative lesions of gestational trophoblast pose problems of interpretation and pitfalls in differential diagnosis. Normally an actively proliferative and invasive tissue, healthy trophoblast shares cytologic features with malignant neoplasms. When trophoblastic hyperplasia accompanies macroscopic villous swelling, a diagnosis of hydatidiform mole (HM) is in order. Exuberant and atypical avillous trophoblast characterizes choriocarcinoma (CCA) and placental site trophoblastic tumor (PSTT). The distinction between them rests on the dimorphic composition of CCA as contrasted with the relati

Placental trophoblasts are the primary source of serum inhibin during pregnancy. We sought to characterize inhibin immunolabeling in trophoblastic neoplasms and compare the results with those for established markers of trophoblastic differentiation. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues from three normal term placentas, 13 hydatidiform moles (HM), five choriocarcinomas (CC) (three gestational, one testicular, one mediastinal), and five placental site trophoblastic tumors (PSTT) were immunolabeled with antibodies to the alpha-subunit of inhibin, hPL, and beta-hCG. Additionally, six first-tr

We recently identified two novel aminopeptidases, placental leucine aminopeptidase (P-LAP) and adipocyte-derived leucine aminopeptidase (A-LAP). Enzymatically, P-LAP degrades oxytocin, vasopressin, and angiotensin III, while A-LAP degrades angiotensin II and kallidin. In this study we investigated the expression and localization of P-LAP and A-LAP in human trophoblastic cells in the normal placenta (n = 26), gestational choriocarcinoma (n = 8), and placental site trophoblastic tumor (n = 3). On immunoblot analysis both P-LAP and A-LAP proteins were detected in normal placenta and five chorioca

BACKGROUND: Invasive mole is a subtype of gestational trophoblastic neoplasms (GTNs) that usually develops from the malignant transformation of trophoblastic tissue after molar evacuation. Invasive moles mostly occur in women of reproductive age, while they are extremely rare in postmenopausal women.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 55-year-old postmenopausal Syrian woman who was admitted to the emergency department at our hospital due to massive vaginal bleeding for 10 days accompanied by constant abdominal pain with diarrhea and vomiting. Following clinical, laboratory and radiol

In 1976, a series of 12 cases describing a lesion that had previously not been well characterized was reported as "trophoblastic pseudotumor of the uterus." Up until that time rare reports of the lesion had classified it most often as an unusual type of sarcoma associated with pregnancy. All patients in that series were alive and well except for one who died from complications of a uterine perforation occurring at the time of a diagnostic curettage. Thus, it appeared to be a benign neoplasm but subsequently it was found that some exhibited malignant behavior and the tumor was renamed "placenta

Nonmetastatic gestational trophoblastic disease encompasses a variety of related neoplasms of the human placenta. With the advent of effective chemotherapy, nearly all of these patients can be cured using a variety of regimens with acceptable toxicity. Hysterectomy is useful in selected patients to decrease the amount of chemotherapy required to produce remission and to salvage patients who have failed initial chemotherapy. The majority of patients can retain child-bearing capacity and often have normal pregnancies after therapy.

Placental site trophoblastic tumor is a rare neoplasm that arises in the trophoblastic tissue of the placental bed. This case report is unusual because of the patient's advanced age at the time of diagnosis and the favorable response of the disease to chemotherapy. Although the clinical course is benign for most patients with placental site trophoblastic tumor, the malignant variant of the disease is characterized by recurrence, relative insensitivity to radiation and chemotherapy, and death. To the authors' knowledge, the 53-year-old woman reported is the oldest patient with histologically co

Invasive mole belongs to gestational trophoblastic neoplasm, which is a highly curable group of pregnancy-related tumors. However, approximately 20% of gestational trophoblastic tumors will be resistant to or relapsed after initial chemotherapy. These resistant and relapsed lesions will require salvage chemotherapy with or without surgery. It is still unclear which regimens are the most effective and least toxic. Here, we report a case of unilateral hydronephrosis presenting 1 week after a history of curettage because of a hydatidiform mole. With the combination treatments of chemotherapy and

INTRODUCTION: Trophoblastic neoplasms are often associated with pregnancy, and nongestational trophoblastic neoplasms are extremely rare. Nongestational ovarian choriocarcinoma (NGCO) is a highly aggressive germ cell-derived tumor frequently presenting with early hematogenous metastasis.
PATIENT CONCERNS: Herein, we report a case of a 28-year-old unmarried woman with regular menstruation who experienced vaginal bleeding 1 week after her last menstrual cycle. Doppler ultrasound revealed bilateral adnexal masses and elevated serum human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels. The patient was initi

Among the three placental proteins discussed, HCG is the only clinically useful tumor marker, and the value of HCG measurements is restricted to patients with gestational and nongestational trophoblastic disease. In patients with gestational trophoblastic disease, HCG levels may serve as an adjunct for the diagnosis, provide prognostic information, and be an objective parameter to evaluate the effects of therapy. Little or no additional information is obtained from HPL or SP-1 measurements. In patients with germ cell neoplasms of the testis, HCG measurements add useful information for clinical

Gestational trophoblastic neoplasms (GTN) are proliferative degenerative disorders of placental elements and include complete or partial mole (90%), invasivemole (5-8%), choriocarcinoma (1-2%) and placental site tumor (1-2%). Chorioadenoma destruens is a trophoblastic tumor, characterized by myometrial invasion through direct extension or via venous channels. We present a case of invasive mole eroding uterus and uterine vasculature, causing sudden rupture of uterus with massive haemoperitoneum mimicking ectopic pregnancy. BACKGROUND: Epithelioid trophoblastic tumor (ETT) is the rarest form of gestational trophoblastic neoplasm, accounting for 1.39-2% of gestational trophoblastic diseases. Its clinical behavior and pathogenesis remain poorly understood, and no standardized treatment guidelines currently exist, with surgery considered the most important therapeutic option. Emerging modalities, including immune checkpoint inhibitors, are under investigation.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of recurrent ETT achieving complete response after combined surgery, chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Notably, the primary

We report a case of ovarian malignant intermediate-type trophoblastic tumor in a clinically normal, nonpregnant 4-year-old rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta). A large solid lobulated mass replaced the right ovary and filled the pelvis. Multiple metastases were observed within the lungs and the liver. The tumor was histologically identified as predominantly composed of intermediate trophoblastic cells, without prominent hemorrhages and the classic bilaminar pattern of cyto- and syncytiotrophoblastic cells characteristic of choriocarcinoma. Immunohistochemical analysis showed the presence of placent
