Tuberculosis remains to be an endemic infectious disease in developing countries. With the increasing incidence of HIV and AIDS, there is further increase in the incidence of tuberculosis. Although CNS involvement by tuberculosis is seen in all age groups, there is a predilection for younger patients. Central nervous system tuberculosis may present as tuberculoma, cerebral abscess or tuberculous meningitis (TBM). Vasculitis secondary to TBM can cause infarcts and rarely aneurysm formation. In TBM there is a thick, gelatinous exudate around the sylvian fissures, basal cisterns. There is a borde

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Poverty, drug resistance and the advent of human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV) have led to a recent upsurge in the incidence of tuberculosis including intracranial tuberculosis. In this article, we report 3 patients who had solitary brain tuberculomas and were otherwise healthy to underscore the importance of continuing vigilance for this disease.
CASE REPORTS: Three patients (57 years, female; 52 years, male; 7 years male) presented to our unit with features of intracranial tumours. They were all HIV negative with no previous history of tuberculosis. Crania

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) was carried out on a patient with histologically proven non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) of the central nervous system (CNS). The observation of the presence of a huge resonance in the region between 0.5-1.5 ppm and the absence of any other signals is not in agreement with those published for NHL in the literature but has a striking similarity to that reported for an intracranial tuberculoma.

Two patients with tuberculous meningitis are described, who developed intracranial tuberculoma while receiving antituberculous therapy. The tuberculoma responded to the same regimen of treatment and small dose of corticosteroids. Such paradoxical reaction should be looked for if the patient develops new neurological signs during the course of the disease.

INTRODUCTION: Neurotuberculosis is a severe form of tuberculosis affecting the central nervous system, manifesting as tuberculomas or abscesses. Simultaneous intracranial and spinal tuberculomas with abscesses are exceptionally rare, presenting unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old female presented with headaches, seizures, and lower limb weakness. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed multiple intracranial and spinal tuberculomas with abscesses. She was treated with antitubercular therapy and corticosteroids, along with surgical drainage, lead

AIM: CT-guided stereotactic methods have long been used for the diagnosis and treatment of intracranial masses. Intracranial tuberculoma is a rare form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Histological confirmation is the gold standard for a correct diagnosis. However, histopathological diagnosis and excision of these lesions have advantages over open surgical methods. This study presents our experience on the use of stereotactic biopsy and excision in the management of intracranial tuberculomas.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirteen patients with intracranial masses underwent stereotactic procedures for

Central nervous system (CNS) tuberculosis (TB), the most dangerous form of TB, remains a public health problem, particularly in developing countries. In the differential diagnosis of intracranial tuberculomas (ICTs), images on radiological findings should be differentiated from other causes of space-occupying lesions. These lesions include malignant diseases such as glioma or lymphoma, pyogenic abscess, toxoplasmosis, neurocysticercosis (NC), sarcoidosis, hydatidosis and late syphilitic involvement of CNS. We present a case with multiple ICTs mimicking NC with similar clinical and imaging mani

In seven cases of intracranial tuberculomas showing different signal intensities on MRI (five characteristic and two nonspecific), detailed histopathological examination was performed to look for number of macrophages, fibrosis, gliosis, degree of inflammatory cellular infiltrate, and type of caseation. The granulomas showing more macrophages, fibrosis and gliosis appeared hypointense on T2-weighted images. Tuberculomas showing minimal macrophages, marked cellular infiltration, and minimal fibrosis appeared hyperintense on T2-weighted images. Lesions showing similar signal intensity on T2-weig

We reported a case of multiple intracranial tuberculoma associated with miliary tuberculosis and reviewed the cases reported as intracranial tuberculoma in the past 11 years. A 41-year-old diabetic man was admitted to our hospital for the treatment of miliary tuberculosis and respiratory insufficiency. On admissIon, he had no neurological deficits except mild consciousness disturbance due to respiratory failure. He developed headache and mental confusion three weeks after the beginning of antituberculous therapy with isoniazid, streptomycin, rifampicin, and ethambutol. Neurological examination

A 38 year old alcoholic patient presented meningitis, loss of consciousness, pneumopathy and multiple cerebral lesions on a CT scan. He improved with ofloxacin and corticosteroid therapy, before the administration of anti-tuberculin treatment. Magnetic resonance imaging was used to follow the course of the lesions once the CT scan had become normal. This case demonstrates the efficacy of ofloxacin against central nervous system tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis (TB) can sometimes involve the central nervous system (CNS), especially among immunocompromised patients, but it is an infrequent manifestation. Among immunocompetent individuals, CNS TB has only scarcely been described in the literature; when it is manifested as a solitary lesion (tuberculoma), it can mimic other CNS tumors, appearing with clinical manifestations of increased intracranial pressure, such as headaches and vomiting. In this manuscript, we describe a case of a CNS tuberculoma, which presented as a cerebellum tumor with signs of increased intracranial pressure in an i

In Japan, the incidence of severe pediatric tuberculosis (TB) has decreased dramatically in recent years. However, children in Japan can still have considerable opportunities to contract TB infection from adult TB patients living nearby, and infants infected with TB may develop severe disseminated disease. A 3-month-old girl was admitted to our hospital with dyspnea and poor feeding. After admission, miliary TB and multiple brain tuberculomas were diagnosed. Anti-tuberculous therapy was initiated with streptomycin (SM), isoniazid (INH), rifampicin and pyrazinamide. Symptoms persisted after sta

We report the case of a 10 month-old girl presenting with multiple intracranial tuberculomas associated with partial status epilepticus and cerebrovascular accident in the left sylvian territory. She later developed paradoxical enlargement of the tuberculomas during antituberculous treatment and severe neurological sequelae with refractory infantile spasms. The development of infantile spasms in this context is particularly remarkable, and this case is illustrative of the complex interrelationship between intracranial lesions, partial status epilepticus, and infantile spasms. It also highlight

A 66-year-old female who had undergone an orthotopic liver transplant two years before admission was admitted with fever and neurological symptoms of several days' duration. Following an extensive work-up, which revealed positive intracranial lesions on computed typography and magnetic resonance imaging, the patient was begun on broad spectrum antimicrobials including corticosteroids. The patient responded though the etiology of infection remained unclear. After a stereotactic biopsy was performed revealing granulomas and acid-fast bacilli, the patient was started on antituberculous medication

Intracranial tuberculomas can sometimes develop or increase in size despite administration of appropriate therapy. We report the case of a child whose intracranial tuberculomas paradoxically enlarged while therapy was being administered, and we review 23 other cases in which tuberculomas increased in size or number and 17 cases in which tuberculomas appeared during therapy. These phenomena generally occurred within 3 months of the start of therapy. All but four patients had neurological deterioration that prompted obtaining a repeated computed tomographic scan. One patient died, about one-four

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis of the central nervous system continues to be a major health hazard in developing countries like India. There are various manifestations of central nervous system tuberculosis including meningitis and space occupying lesions. We present a case of tuberculoma en-plaque which is often initially confused with a meningioma on presentation. We also review the literature relevant to this unusual entity.
METHODS: A search of PubMed, PubMed Central, the Cochrane Library, and MEDLINE were performed to identify all English language reports of intracranial en-plaque tuberculomas
