Zoonotic diseases have a significant impact on both human and animal health globally. The present study was planned to prioritize the zoonoses in Punjab state of India. To develop a zoonotic disease prioritization scoring system, a comprehensive approach has been taken, including literature review, key person interviews with animal health experts (n = 12) and medical professionals (n = 7), and nine focus group discussions (FGDs) with veterinary academicians, medical professionals, and field veterinary doctors. The scoring system comprises of seven major criteria, each assigned a weightage scor

After almost 40 years, the 27 member states (MS) of the European Union (EU) will comply with the European Law 429/2016 in 2021 by completing a process of unification and harmonization of all regulations related to animal health between MS. These new provisions are based on modern scientific principles on animal health, on long-term epidemiological data, and, above all, on the most current risk assessment and analysis. The paper describes all changes and updates, which will impact the Italian current National regulation. A total of 58 animal diseases have been included in the Annex II ("Listing

The protective efficacy of Mycobacterium bovis-bacille Calmette Guérin (BCG) against tuberculosis (TB) is variable in both humans and cattle. Exposure to environmental mycobacteria is thought to result in inappropriate priming of host immune responses. To investigate the impact of environmental mycobacteria on BCG efficacy, cattle were infected with M. avium, vaccinated with BCG, challenged with M. bovis and skin tested prior to necropsy. Elevated levels of IFNgamma were evident in M. avium-exposed animals before and after BCG vaccination with a bias towards avian purified protein derivative (

Orally delivered mycobacterial antigens may not sensitize the immunized animals causing a positive tuberculin skin test response. As the first step to address this critical issue, we characterized the response of farmed red deer (Cervus elaphus) to orally delivered heat-inactivated Mycobacterium bovis. Thirty-two adult red deer hinds from a farm known to be free of tuberculosis (TB) were randomly assigned to two different treatment groups, immunized (n=24) and control (n=8). Immunized hinds were dosed orally with 2 ml of PBS containing 6 × 10(6) heat-inactivated M. bovis. The mean skin test re

BACKGROUND: Small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) rarely coexists with pulmonary Mycobacterium avium intracellular complex (MAC) infection. The key drug for SCLC treatment is etoposide, which is metabolized by cytochrome P-450 (CYP) 3A4. Meanwhile, the key drugs for pulmonary MAC infection are clarithromycin (CAM) and rifampicin (RFP), and their metabolism influences CYP3A4. Therefore, treatment of concurrent SCLC and pulmonary MAC infection is difficult, and to the best of our knowledge, no report of treatments for concurrent SCLC and pulmonary MAC infection has been published. Patient Concerns and D

The genus Aspergillus is composed of more than 300 species, a fraction of which are involved in animal or human infections mostly following environmental exposure. Various risk factors (i.e., immunosuppression, tuberculosis) have been recognized for human whereas for veterinary infections, unhygienic management, trauma, anatomical conformation of the skull, or suspected immunological deficiencies have been suggested. In animals, aspergillosis is mostly sporadic but in some circumstance such as infections on poultry farms may involve the whole flock. Since the high prevalence of immunosuppressi

There have been few recent studies demonstrating a definitive association between the transmission of airborne infections and the ventilation of buildings. The severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) epidemic in 2003 and current concerns about the risk of an avian influenza (H5N1) pandemic, have made a review of this area timely. We searched the major literature databases between 1960 and 2005, and then screened titles and abstracts, and finally selected 40 original studies based on a set of criteria. We established a review panel comprising medical and engineering experts in the fields of mi

Zoonotic diseases have huge livestock and public health burden worldwide, including India. Prioritizing zoonotic diseases is one of the important tasks under 'One Health' as it facilitates effective policy making, proper allocation of resources and promotion of multisectoral collaboration. Although some efforts have been made to prioritizing zoonotic diseases at national level in India, it is important to identify priority diseases in regional settings due to wide variation in climate and demography of different states. Therefore, the present study aims to prioritize zoonotic diseases for the

We report on a coinfection of Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium and Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium var. Copenhagen phage type DT2 in pigeons from one flock, from which squabs were occasionally consumed by humans. Triplex quantitative real-time PCR and culture methods were used for M. a. avium detection in livers and culture method was used for the detection of Salmonella sp. in samples of liver and caecum of 33 examined birds. M. a. avium was detected in a total of 31 (93.9%) and Salmonella Typhimurium in a total of 11 (33.3%) pigeons. Coinfection with both pathogens was found in 10 (

Interleukin-17A (IL-17A), a pro-inflammatory cytokine primarily produced by Th17 cells, has emerged as a pivotal immunological mediator in both protective and pathological processes across different animal species in addition to human beings. Over the past decade, research has expanded significantly, elucidating IL-17A's roles in host defense, immune modulation, disease progression and vaccine induced immune responses. The present review focuses on recent advances in the understanding of IL-17A within the context of veterinary medicine. IL-17A has been implicated in protection from various dis

The distribution of iron and mycobacteria was examined in the intestinal tract of ruminants with naturally-occurring M. paratuberculosis infection and compared with mycobacterial infections in several species. This distribution was compared with that of iron in chronic lesions caused by other microbial or parasitic agents. In the clinical form of paratuberculosis in cattle, sheep and goats there was marked lymphangiectasis and a high proportion of the granulomatous lesions contained siderotic macrophages with a high mycobacterial content. In cattle with preclinical lesions of granulomatous ent

Although millions of patients with underlining conditions are treated primarily with anti-TNF-α agents, little is known about the safety of this standard therapy during the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. In this study, we investigated the effect of anti-TNF-α monoclonal antibodies on the cellular entry mechanism of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and increasing the risk of COVID-19 development. We focused on the expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme II (ACE2), type II transmembrane serine proteases (TMPRSS2)/TNF-α converting enzyme (TACE) ratio

INTRODUCTION: Around 75% of (re)emerging infections are of zoonotic origins. The risk of zoonotic transmission in Mozambique is high because approximately 81% of the country's labor force is involved with agriculture, which represents a vulnerability for more frequent human-animal interaction and risk of spillover events. A One Health Zoonotic Disease Prioritization (OHZDP) workshop was conducted in Mozambique to facilitate coordination and collaboration within and across sectors to prevent, detect, and respond to zoonotic disease threats. Based on the success of this integrated workshop, the

BACKGROUND: The majority of Nepalese people are involved in farming. However, due to limited knowledge of zoonoses and poor preventive practices on the part of livestock farmers, vulnerabilities to zoonotic diseases are very high. The main objective of this study was to assess the regional variation in zoonoses-related knowledge and preventive practices of livestock farmers in different ecological regions of Nepal.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Descriptive cross-sectional quantitative research design was followed in the study. The total sample size was 380 livestock farmers from randomly selected thr

Many infectious diseases originating from, or carried by, wildlife affect wildlife conservation and biodiversity, livestock health, or human health. We provide an update on changes in the epidemiology of 25 selected infectious, wildlife-related diseases in Europe (from 2010-16) that had an impact, or may have a future impact, on the health of wildlife, livestock, and humans. These pathogens were selected based on their: 1) identification in recent Europe-wide projects as important surveillance targets, 2) inclusion in European Union legislation as pathogens requiring obligatory surveillance, 3

The authors present the results of a histopathological study on the lymph-nodes taken from 45 subjects suffering from either an AIDS or from a chronic adenopathy corresponding to the definition of AIDS related complex (ARC). The various aspects observed were classed as type I to type IV. The lymph-node modifications observed in the 29 patients with an ARC could be divided into three principle groups: an extensive follicular hyperplasia associated with other elementary lesions or type IA (25 lymph-nodes from 23 patients); changes resembling a multicentric Castleman syndrome or type IB (1 case);

BACKGROUND: Pakistan has a rich cultural and faunal diversity, which sustains several ethnic communities that rely on traditional medicine for primary care. The Himalayan region of Azad Jammu and Kashmir in Pakistan is rich in biodiversity and home to a variety of ethnic communities, each of which practices its own ethnobiological medicine. Despite this, little is known about the use of animal-based traditional medicine in this area. This project seeks to investigate and describe the cultural and medicinal uses of animals among indigenous groups in the study area.
METHODS: The study was carri
